Why Is The Crowd Divided? Attribution For Dispersion In Online Word Of Mouth, Stephen He, Samuel Bond Jan 2015

Why Is The Crowd Divided? Attribution For Dispersion In Online Word Of Mouth, Stephen He, Samuel Bond

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The widespread availability of online word of mouth (WOM) enables modern consumers to assess not only the opinions of others about products and services, but also the extent to which those opinions are consistent or dispersive. Despite longstanding calls for greater understanding of mixed opinions, existing evidence is inconclusive regarding effects of WOM dispersion, and theoretical accounts have relied primarily on the notion of reference dependence. Extending prior work, this research proposes an attribution-based account, in which consumer interpretation of WOM dispersion depends on the extent to which tastes in a product domain are perceived to be dissimilar, so that …

Accurate distances to pulsars can be used for a variety of studies of the Galaxy and its electron content. However, most distance measures to pulsars have been derived from the absorption (or lack thereof) of pulsar emission by Galactic H I gas, which typically implies that only upper or lower limits on the pulsar distance are available. We present a critical analysis of all measured H I distance limits to pulsars and other neutron stars, and translate these limits into actual distance estimates through a likelihood analysis that simultaneously corrects for statistical biases. We also apply this analysis to parallax …

Background

West Virginia has the worst oral health in the United States, but the reasons for this are unclear. This pilot study explored the etiology of this disparity using culture-independent analyses to identify bacterial species associated with oral disease.

Methods

Bacteria in subgingival plaque samples from twelve participants in two independent West Virginia dental-related studies were characterized using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and Human Oral Microbe Identification Microarray (HOMIM) analysis. Unifrac analysis was used to characterize phylogenetic differences between bacterial communities obtained from plaque of participants with low or high oral disease, which was further evaluated using clustering and Principal …

Rank-Based Attachment Leads To Power Law Graphs, Jeannette Janssen, Paweł Prałat Jan 2010

Rank-Based Attachment Leads To Power Law Graphs, Jeannette Janssen, Paweł Prałat

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We investigate the degree distribution resulting from graph generation models based on rank-based attachment. In rank-based attachment, all vertices are ranked according to a ranking scheme. The link probability of a given vertex is proportional to its rank raised to the power ―α, for some α ∈ (0, 1). Through a rigorous analysis, we show that rank-based attachment models lead to graphs with a power law degree distribution with exponent 1 + 1/α whenever vertices are ranked according to their degree, their age, or a randomly chosen fitness value. We also investigate the case where the ranking is based on …

Mass Distribution On Clusters At The Percolation Threshold, Mark F. Gyure, Martin V. Ferer, Boyd F. Edwards, Greg Huber Jan 1995

Mass Distribution On Clusters At The Percolation Threshold, Mark F. Gyure, Martin V. Ferer, Boyd F. Edwards, Greg Huber

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Monte Carlo simulations and a scaling hypothesis are used to study the distribution of blob masses on two-dimensional finite-mass clusters at the percolation threshold. The exponents associated with this distribution function are a combination of backbone and percolation exponents. This work offers insights into the structure and fragmentation properties of percolation clusters in particular, and provides methods applicable to other fractal distribution problems in general.

Distribution Of Proteoglycans Antigenically Related To Corneal Keratan Sulfate Proteoglycan, J L Funderburgh, B Caterson, G W Conrad Jan 1987

Distribution Of Proteoglycans Antigenically Related To Corneal Keratan Sulfate Proteoglycan, J L Funderburgh, B Caterson, G W Conrad

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Three antibodies reacting with corneal keratan sulfate proteoglycan were used to detect antigenically related molecules in 11 bovine and 13 embryonic chick tissues. Two monoclonal antibodies recognized sulfated epitopes on the keratan sulfate chain and a polyclonal antibody bound antigenic sites on the core protein of corneal keratan sulfate proteoglycan. Competitive immunoassay detected core protein and keratan sulfate antigens in guanidine HCl extracts of most tissues. Keratan sulfate antigens of most bovine tissues were only partially extracted with guanidine HCl, but the remainder could be solubilized by CNBr treatment of the guanidine-extracted residue. Keratan sulfate and core protein antigens co-eluted …
