Should I Stay Or Should I Go: The Impact Of Crossing Migrants In Local Communities In Mexico, Norma M. De La Rosa-Bustamante
Whittier Scholars Program
The interactions between migrants and Mexican local communities have positive and negative outcomes. A report by Human Rights First found that more than 630 violent crimes against asylum seekers were reported in the first few months of the “Remain in Mexico” policy. Still, some migrants have been able to assimilate and stay in Mexico, particularly in large cities such as Tijuana, Baja California and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. This research project combines qualitative data collected through interviews with local NGOs between September 2020 to February 2021 and secondary research data. It focuses on the living conditions of migrants who have stayed …

Introduction: This study explored how food security, perceived stress and mental health of persons with metabolic syndrome (MetS) changed in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: An online survey was administered to persons enrolled in a 2-year lifestyle intervention trial to reverse metabolic syndrome at baseline; the survey was repeated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Outcomes were a change in depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and food security as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-8, Cohen Stress Scale, and USDA 10-item Food Security Screener. Changes in outcomes were analyzed with measures of association, paired t-test, repeated measures and independent t-test.
Results: Participants (n = …

Infection with COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) is associated with a variety of generalized and specific symptoms, including neurological complications of both the peripheral and central nervous systems. In this case report, we present the case of a previously healthy 55-year-old woman who was diagnosed with transverse myelitis following a previous infection with COVID-19. MRI showed progressive demyelination of the cervical and thoracic spinal cord, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed increased levels of protein and red blood cells and no markers of infection, including negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for COVID-19 antibodies. The patient was treated with a course of methylprednisolone, multiple treatments …

Social media, one of the most pervasive forms of technology, has been widely studied in relation to the mental health and well-being of individuals. However, the current literature on social media and well-being has provided mixed and inconclusive findings, thus creating a polarizing view of social media. These mixed findings continue to extend into the pandemic, with researchers debating over the effects of social media in the new norms of social isolation. In light of these inconclusive findings, the aim of our meta-analysis was to synthesize previous research data in order to have a holistic understanding of the association between …

Worker Participation In A Time Of Covid: A Case Study Of Occupational Health And Safety Regulation In Ontario, Alan Hall, Eric Tucker
Articles & Book Chapters
This study examines worker voice in the development and implementation of safety plans or protocols for covid-19 prevention among hospital workers, long-term care workers, and education workers in the Canadian province of Ontario. Although Ontario occupational health and safety law and official public health policy appear to recognize the need for active consultation with workers and labour unions, there were limited – and in some cases no – efforts by employers to meaningfully involve workers, worker representatives (reps), or union officials in assessing covid-19 risks and planning protection and prevention measures. The political and legal efforts of workers and unions …

Overconfident, Resentful, And Misinformed: How Racial Animus Motivates Confidence In False Beliefs, Salil D. Benegal, Matt Motta
Political Science Faculty publications
Many Americans not only hold misinformed beliefs about policy-relevant topics (e.g., climate change, public health) but hold those views with high degrees of confidence in their factual accuracy. Epistemic overconfidence – an application of the Dunning Kruger Effect (DKE, or “ignorance of one’s own ignorance” – is politically consequential, as misinformed individuals who hold those views with high degrees of confidence may be especially likely to oppose evidence-based policies and resist attitude change. Yet, its psychological origins – particularly in application to misinformation endorsement – are not well understood. In this paper, we propose that racial animus plays a key …

Background/Introduction: ALGH expressed an interest in offering VenoVenous (VV) ECMO therapy but faced many challenges that prevented this from occurring. During the COVID-19 pandemic, evidence showed that conventional treatment measures failed however, VV ECMO therapy was proven to benefit this patient population. Globally, healthcare experienced overcrowding in the ICUs accompanied by bed shortages. Given the limited resources and support services available in addition to the knowledge that VV ECMO improved patient outcomes, ALGH decided to develop a formal ECMO program.
Local Problem: The challenge of implementing an ECMO program before COVID-19 was the lack of physician support and ownership of …

Impact Of Covid-19 Vaccines On Inr, Ashley Green, Jennifer Martinez
Nursing
Introduction:The FDA issued emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, followed by the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in December 2020. At the time, not much was known about these vaccines and how they would impact a patient’s warfarin therapy or INR levels.
Rationale:Other vaccines, such as the Influenza vaccine have been shown to increase INRs. Anecdotal patient observations prompted the anticoagulation nurses to further assess for the interaction between warfarin and the vaccines.
Method:Anticoagulation Clinic nurses developed and implemented an Epic SmartPhrase for patients that have a COVID-19 vaccine since their last INR. The Epic SmartPhrase …

The Implementation Of Health Care System Virtual Stroke Support Group During Covid-19 And Its Lasting Impact, Joy Rainey, Katherine Murczek
Nursing
Introduction: In the United States there are nearly 800,000 strokes per year. Approximately one-third of stroke survivors experience depression and decreased quality of life. Stroke support groups offer social support and have been shown to increase functional outcomes, increase the survivor’s sense of self-efficacy, and improve self-esteem. Unfortunately, in-person stroke support groups were unavailable due to social distancing and stay at home orders that were instituted during the peak of Covid-19.
Rationale: Stroke coordinators of the IL Advocate Aurora Health system recognized that it was important to provide a support group for their stroke survivors during this time. Therefore, the …

Covid-19 Impact On Admissions For Acute Congestive Heart Failure Patients, Orretta Dejonge, Jocelyn Williams, Trina Maxey
Nursing
Background: Congestive heart failure (CHF) is costly to treat because many patients are readmitted within 30 days of discharge. In the U.S. before the pandemic, approximately 25% of heart failure patients were readmitted within 30 days.
Local Problem: Pre-pandemic patient education and cardiac consultation on admission allowed for more efficient care coordination, enabling the patients to manage their CHF at home. Our hospital had a pre-pandemic readmission rate of 12.4%. During the pandemic CHF patients decreased the rate of admission because of social distancing and fear of exposure. This resulted in patients not receiving the care needed, including proper medication …

Described as the crisis of our generation, the coronavirus pandemic has had a profound effect on consumption behaviour, in turn devastating businesses globally. Marking a departure from the sanctity of contract and causing perceived incursions to accrued legal rights, the Coronavirus Act 2020 and related legislation provide business tenancies protection, among others, against forfeiture for non-payment of rent. While this regulation of commercial tenancies appears to be justified on the basis of pragmatic utility, I suggest that Honoré’s incident of ownership prohibiting harmful use also allows for these emergency laws to be vindicated from a property perspective. This provides an …

The Effect Of Isolation On The Mental Health Of Older Adults, Christina Yates
Senior Honors Theses
As individuals age and lose mobility and cognitive functioning, many require full-time care which their loved ones are unable to provide. This often results in placement into long-term care facilities, and these facilities are notorious for being understaffed. Physical health becomes the only priority, depriving the client of having their mental and emotional needs fulfilled. Family and friends may decrease visitation due to distance or convenience. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic closed the doors of many facilities to nearly all visitors. Thus, the only individuals the residents of these facilities experienced interaction with were overworked staff members looking intimidating in …

Management - TNR
The rise in subsidized spay-neuter access helped drive the euthanasia of shelter pets in the US from an estimated 13. 5 million in 1973 to 1.5 million in 2019. When the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic triggered lockdowns beginning in March 2020, many veterinary providers suspended nonessential services such as routine spay-neuter surgeries. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volume of spay-neuter procedures performed by spay-neuter clinics. A retrospective study of patient data from 212 spay-neuter clinics using Clinic HQ practice management software was conducted from January 2019 through December …

“We’Re Still Here:” Evaluating Academic Library Instagram Posting During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Julie Turley
Publications and Research
Academic libraries use social media to build community and increase visibility and engagement among followers–students, faculty, and staff. Instagram, in particular, is a popular social media platform used by a college-aged demographic. Academic library Instagram administrators create and maintain Instagram accounts to post visual content to promote the physical library and library services. In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic closed the college campuses of the New York City-based City University of New York (CUNY) system to all but “essential staff” and compelled non-essential employees to work from home. During the first few months of 2020, college library Instagram administrators in …

Population Health, East Africa
Factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy (which we define as refusal to be vaccinated when asked, resulting in delayed or non- vaccination) are poorly studied in sub-Saharan Africa and among refugees, particularly in Kenya. Using survey data from wave five (March to June 2021) of the Kenya Rapid Response Phone Survey (RRPS), a household survey representative of the population of Kenya, we estimated the self-reported rates and factors associated with vaccine hesitancy among non-refugees and refugees in Kenya. Non-refugee households were recruited through sampling of the 2015/16 Kenya Household Budget Survey and random digit dialing. Refugee households were recruited through …

Inaction As A State Response To The Coronavirus Outbreak: Unconstitutionality By Omission, Antonios Kouroutakis
Seattle University Law Review Online
The World Health Organization on March 11 declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. While the pandemic was spreading across the globe, governments were under pressure to respond. Still, some countries during the first wave of the pandemic, in their first reaction, did not put in place any emergency regulations. Such reaction, which was a policy option, was an intended omission as lawmakers and policy makers decided not to take action and such emergency omission was a novelty and a paradox in emergency situations. Moreover, I argue that during emergencies governments have a distinct duty to act, and I offer …
