My Palate Hung With Starlight: A Gastrocritical Reading Of Seamus Heaney’S Poetry, Anke Klitzing Dec 2019

My Palate Hung With Starlight: A Gastrocritical Reading Of Seamus Heaney’S Poetry, Anke Klitzing

Articles

Nobel-prize winning poet Seamus Heaney is celebrated for his rich verses recalling his home in the Northern Irish countryside of County Derry. Yet while the imaginative links to nature in his poetry have already been critically explored, little attention has been paid so far to his rendering of local food and foodways. From ploughing, digging potatoes and butter-churning to picking blackberries, Heaney sketches not only the everyday activities of mid-20th century rural Ireland, but also the social dynamics of community and identity and the socio-cultural symbiosis embedded in those practices. Larger questions of love, life and death also infiltrate the …

Self-Compassion As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Shame-Proneness And State Shame For Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Mary Catherine Guman Dec 2019

Self-Compassion As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Shame-Proneness And State Shame For Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Mary Catherine Guman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Childhood sexual abuse is a prevalent problem that has significant implications for psychological wellness and personal health. Childhood sexual abuse is related to a variety of negative outcomes, including the presence of shame-proneness. Consequently, shame-proneness is significantly related to heightened feelings of shame in adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. One might assume that self-compassion will decrease state shame for shame-prone survivors of sexual abuse; however, this might only be true when the total score of the Self-Compassion Scale is utilized. When the subscales are examined separately, the negative subscales could exacerbate the presence of state shame in shame-prone survivors …

How Does The Work Of The Negro Youth Study (1937-1941) Fit Into The History Of The Social Sciences?, Randall Haines Kaufman Nov 2019

How Does The Work Of The Negro Youth Study (1937-1941) Fit Into The History Of The Social Sciences?, Randall Haines Kaufman

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Through a historical analysis[1] this dissertation addresses how the work of the Negro[2] Youth Study (NYS) fits into the historical development of sociology during the early Civil Rights Movement (CRM). Secondarily, the dissertation addresses the silence surrounding NYS and its place in Black Sociology.

As the Depression deepened, educators worried about another “lost generation” of young Americans.[3] In response, The American Youth Commission in 1935, followed by the NYS in 1937, sought solutions. In particular, the NYS represents a moment in social sciences, started in the 19th century, or a moment when social sciences become a …

Enter At Your Own Risk: Criminalizing Asylum-Seekers, Thomas M. Mcdonnell, Vanessa H. Merton

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In nearly three years in office, President Donald J. Trump’s war against immigrants and the foreign-born seems only to have intensified. Through a series of Executive Branch actions and policies rather than legislation, the Trump Administration has targeted immigrants and visitors from Muslim-majority countries, imposed quotas on and drastically reduced the independence of Immigration Court Judges, cut the number of refugees admitted by more than 80%, cancelled DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), and stationed Immigration Customs and Enforcement (“ICE”) agents at state courtrooms to arrest unauthorized immigrants, intimidating them from participating as witnesses and litigants. Although initially saying that …

To The Editor: A Response, Christine Anne George Oct 2019

To The Editor: A Response, Christine Anne George

Library Staff Articles

When I teach students about research, I tell them that they must go to the primary source. They cannot simply rely on someone else’s interpretation of it. If they do not understand the primary source, then they need to look for context. It is irresponsible for scholars and researchers to only rely on one source and to lift quotes and citations from that single source. Moreover, I tell students they must always, always, always, provide citations to support their assertions. Boles’s lack of citations and sources in his section discussing archival privilege is extremely troubling. He avoids nuance in order …

2019-2020 Book-In-Common Teaching Guide, Marta Moore

Book in Common

Lisa Ko’s The Leavers addresses themes which are both timely and timeless. This year’s Teaching Guide can help us lead Collin’s year-long exploration of adoption, identity, families, youth, parent-child relationships, immigration, crime, friendship, identity, race, courage, fate, morality, and agency.

As always, the 2019-2020 Teaching Guide exemplifies the Collin College Book-in- Common Committee’s commitment to the goal of college-wide engagement with an important book and its author. Highlights of this year’s Guide include:

  • Classroom and library resources

The Evolution Of United States Supreme Court Jurisprudence Under The Leadership Of Chief Justices Melville Fuller And Edward White From 1888 To 1911, Christine Cromie Oct 2019

The Evolution Of United States Supreme Court Jurisprudence Under The Leadership Of Chief Justices Melville Fuller And Edward White From 1888 To 1911, Christine Cromie

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

The phrase “What is Old is New Again” is a timeless adage. Indeed, on a deeper level, this sentiment can relate to political issues and governmental problems. Questions about how involved the federal government, especially the judicial system and Supreme Court, should be in the lives of the public tend to repeat themselves. A close reading of today’s headlines about monopolistic power as it relates to technology and the rise of Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple harkens back to similar issues and concerns at the turn of the nineteenth century as the United States moved from the Gilded Age to …

Learning From Feminist Judgments: Lessons In Language And Advocacy, Bridget J. Crawford, Linda L. Berger, Kathryn M. Stanchi Oct 2019

Learning From Feminist Judgments: Lessons In Language And Advocacy, Bridget J. Crawford, Linda L. Berger, Kathryn M. Stanchi

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This essay offers a perspective-shifting approach to meeting some of our pedagogical goals in law school: the study of re-imagined judicial decisions. Our thesis is that exposing students to “alternative judgments”—opinions that have been rewritten by authors who look at the law and the facts differently—will help students develop a more realistic and nuanced view of judicial decision-making: one that is aspirational and based in the real world, and one that allows them to envision their futures as successful advocates. The “alternative judgments” of the feminist judgments projects can enrich the law-school experience in multiple ways. First, seeing a written …

Walt Whitman At The Aurora: A Model For Journalistic Attribution, Kevin Mcmullen, Stefan Schöberlein Oct 2019

Walt Whitman At The Aurora: A Model For Journalistic Attribution, Kevin Mcmullen, Stefan Schöberlein

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Relatively little manuscript material exists to definitively tie Walt Whitman to the bulk of the journalistic writing attributed to him, particularly the writing in the early years of his career. Because the vast majority of his early journalistic work was unsigned, attribution is most often based on the knowledge of Whitman’s involvement with a given paper, coupled with the identification of some sort of Whit- manic voice or tone in a given piece of writing. However, a writer’s style and tone are often affected by the form and context in which they are writing, meaning that Whitman’s journalistic voice is …

Fathers’ And Mothers’ Attachment Styles, Couple Conflict, Parenting Quality, And Children’S Behavior Problems: An Intervention Test Of Mediation, Philip A. Cowan, Carolyn Pape Cowan, Marsha Kline Pruett, Kyle Pruett Sep 2019

Fathers’ And Mothers’ Attachment Styles, Couple Conflict, Parenting Quality, And Children’S Behavior Problems: An Intervention Test Of Mediation, Philip A. Cowan, Carolyn Pape Cowan, Marsha Kline Pruett, Kyle Pruett

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

A diverse sample of 239 primarily low-income couples participated in a random controlled trial of the Supporting Father Involvement couples group intervention. In this report, we examined the value of adding measures of fathers’ attachment style and parenting to mothers’ measures in order to explain variations in children’s behavior problems. We also tested the hypothesis that the link between intervention-induced reductions in couple conflict and reductions in anxious/harsh parenting can be explained by intervention effects on parents’ attachment insecurity or on anxiety and depression. Fathers’ attachment security and parenting behavior added significantly to mothers’ in accounting for children’s internalizing and …
