Corrosion Durability Of A Nano-Particle Enriched Zinc-Rich Coating System For Highway Steel Bridges, Saiada Fuadi Fancy Nov 2019

Corrosion Durability Of A Nano-Particle Enriched Zinc-Rich Coating System For Highway Steel Bridges, Saiada Fuadi Fancy

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corrosion is a major concern for the long-term durability and structural integrity of steel components of highway bridges when unprotected. The application of protective coatings has been widely used for corrosion mitigation of atmospherically exposed structural steel. At present, the zinc-rich primer (ZRP) based three-coat system is widely used in the United States. The metallic zinc pigment ideally would provide corrosion resistance by sacrificial as well as barrier protection. The life of these coating systems is at best only half of the bridge design life. Furthermore, premature degradation may occur if there are flaws in the system due to improper …

Effect Of Specimen Thicknesses On Water Absorption And Flexural Strength Of Cfrp Laminates Subjected To Water Or Alkaline Solution Immersion, Xue Zhang, Yanlei Wang, Baolin Wan, Gaochuang Cai, Yuan Qu May 2019

Effect Of Specimen Thicknesses On Water Absorption And Flexural Strength Of Cfrp Laminates Subjected To Water Or Alkaline Solution Immersion, Xue Zhang, Yanlei Wang, Baolin Wan, Gaochuang Cai, Yuan Qu

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, an experimental research was undertaken to investigate the effect of specimen thicknesses on water absorptions and flexural strengths of wet lay-up CFRP laminates subjected to distilled water or alkaline solution immersion up to 180 days. Test results showed that the water uptake and flexural strength retention of CFRP laminates were significantly affected by the adopted specimen thickness. For the same aging time, the water uptake of CFRP laminates decreased in the early stage of immersion and increased in the later stage of immersion with the increase of specimen thickness. Meanwhile, the flexural strength retention generally increased as …

Long-Term Durability Of Frp Bond In The Midwest United States For Externally-Strengthened Bridge Components, Sasan Siavashi, Christopher D. Eamon, Abdel A. Makkawy, Hwai-Chung Wu Jan 2019

Long-Term Durability Of Frp Bond In The Midwest United States For Externally-Strengthened Bridge Components, Sasan Siavashi, Christopher D. Eamon, Abdel A. Makkawy, Hwai-Chung Wu

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

In this study, the bond strength of a typical FRP system subjected to long-term natural weathering in the Midwest United States is experimentally investigated, and the rate of degradation is estimated. To do this, the bond strength of an FRP system exposed to over fifteen years of weathering is determined with pull-off testing, and a relationship between strength reduction and exposure time is developed using regression analysis. For unweathered specimens, it was found that the attachment strength of the FRP system was governed by the concrete substrate, while for weathered specimens, the FRP system could detach by either a failure …

Influence Of Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials (Pcms) On The Chloride Ion Diffusivity Of Concretes Exposed To Freeze-Thaw Cycles: Insights From Multiscale Numerical Simulations, Sumeru Nayak, Gideon A. Lyngdoh, Sumanta Das Jan 2019

Lyngdoh, Sumanta Das

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Use of phase change materials (PCMs) to tailor the thermal performance of concretes by efficient energy storage and transmission has gained traction in recent years. This study incorporates microencapsulated PCMs as sand-replacement in concrete bridge decks and performs numerical simulation involving multiple interactive length scales to elucidate the influence of PCM-incorporation in concretes subjected to combined freeze-thaw and chloride ingress-induced deterioration. The simulations show significant increase in durability against combined freeze-thaw and chloride ingress-induced deterioration in concretes when microencapsulated PCMs are incorporated. In addition, a reliability-based probabilistic analysis shows significant increase in life expectancy of bridge decks with PCM-incorporation. The …

Rumble Stripes And Pavement Marking Delineation, Steven Zehr, Brandon Hardin, Hillary Lowther, Dana Plattner, Timothy Wells, Ayman Habib, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

Pavement markings serve an important role on the highway and must be visible in day, night, and wet conditions. Pavement markings placed in grooved pavement are receiving considerable interest due to their potential for greater durability by providing protection from plow blades used during winter maintenance. Raised pavement markers (RPMs) are also used for roadway delineation, and the failure rate of RPMs in and in between rumble depressions is also of interest. This study evaluated white edge lines and yellow edge lines on roads in Indiana and other northern states, as well as RPMs in and in between rumble depressions. …
