The General University Requirements (GUR) is a component of the new 4-year undergraduate program at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). This study examined students’ views and experiences of the GUR using a qualitative methodology. Written comments of 240 freshmen, sophomores, and senior-year students with reference to open-ended questions on their memorable experiences in the GUR study were collected. The qualitative findings suggested that students generally had positive views on the GUR in terms of its widely adopted active and experiential learning pedagogy, useful and attractive contents, caring teaching staff, and rich learning outcomes. Challenges were also identified for further …

Message from President: When November opens the calendrical gateway to the holidays, Thanksgiving, the holiday nominally devoted to appreciation, draws attention to the question of gratitude. Faculty members live, move, and have their being in the sphere of gratitude. These talented people, whose aptitudes would qualify them for a thousand high-paying careers, set aside lucrative opportunities in order to celebrate the bounty of knowledge. Even during the most depressing moments of an academic career—even despite excessive workloads, deteriorating facilities, and budget shortfalls—faculty members quietly applaud, through their service, the implicit generosity of a universe that not only makes itself interpretable, …

The State Of Multiculturalism And Diversity In Undergraduate Psychology Training, Milton Fuentes, Casey R. Shannon Jul 2016

The State Of Multiculturalism And Diversity In Undergraduate Psychology Training, Milton Fuentes, Casey R. Shannon

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Over the past few decades, diversity and multiculturalism have received considerable attention in the field of psychology. While there have been notable efforts to ensure these important areas are addressed in undergraduate psychology training, little is known about this undertaking. The present study examined how diversity and multiculturalism were addressed in the course titles and course descriptions of 200 undergraduate, psychology programs across North America and their corresponding general education programs. Analyses revealed that while most undergraduate psychology programs offered diversity or multicultural courses, very few programs required these courses. Moreover, when these courses were offered, they typically examined diversity …

Navigating The Waters Of Accreditation: Best Practices, Challenges, And Lessons Learned From One Institution, Tracey Covington Hasbun, Amanda M. Rudolph

In higher education, as many as 50% of educator preparation programs (EPPs) look to a national accreditation agency as one way to provide evidence of the rigor and quality of their programs. Although a large number of EPPs find value in the self-study and external review that come with the national accreditation process, the process itself can be daunting and time-consuming. Many look to the literature or to the accreditation experiences provided by other institutions as a means to assist their own accreditation journey. The purpose of this article is to discuss one regional, comprehensive EPP’s experiences with national accreditation, …

The University General Education Committee is responsible for (1) establishing the definition, criteria, and learning outcomes for each university general education area; (2) reviewing syllabi and approving courses used to satisfy university general education requirements; and (3) facilitating on-going review, assessment, and modification of the university general education curriculum.

A Distinctive Vision For The Liberal Arts: General Education And The Flourishing Of Christian Higher Education, Cynthia Wells

Higher Education Faculty Scholarship

This article argues that a coherent and inspired general education program, infused with a deliberate vision of the liberal arts, is crucial to the flourishing of Christian higher education. This article begins by describing the context and status of general education, emphasizing how this element of the educational program falls short in embodying a distinctive mission of Christian higher education. This article then contends that a vibrant vision of general education will be grounded in particular aspects of a liberal arts education that fulfill crucial outcomes of the Christian university, specifically cultivating the formal virtues and fostering meaning and purpose. …

Realizing General Education: Reconsidering Conceptions And Renewing Practice, Cynthia Wells Jan 2016

Realizing General Education: Reconsidering Conceptions And Renewing Practice, Cynthia Wells

Higher Education Faculty Scholarship

General Education is widely touted as an enduring distinctive of higher education in the United States (Association of American Colleges and Universities, [11]; Boyer, [37]; Gaston, [86]; Zakaria, [202]). The notion that undergraduate education demands wide‐ranging knowledge is a hallmark of U.S. college graduates that international educators emulate (Blumenstyk, [25]; Rhodes, [158]; Tsui, [181]). The veracity of this distinct educational vision is supported by the fact that approximately one third of the typically 120 credits required for the bachelor's degree in the United States consist of general education courses (Lattuca & Stark, [120]). Realizing a general education has been understood …

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

An exploratory, observation-based study sought to strengthen understanding of the development of social communication skills that facilitate academic success, particularly within general education settings. Sixteen middle and high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), all of whom participated in at least one period per day of core academic instruction in a general education classroom, were observed over a period of one to three months each. Frequencies of five appropriate and three inappropriate social academic behaviors are described, in terms of their relative frequencies to one another, and their overall consistency over the course of observations. Students observed were more …
