Drinking In Context: The Influence Of Peer Pressure On Drinking Among Chinese College Students, Lanyan Ding
Drinking In Context: The Influence Of Peer Pressure On Drinking Among Chinese College Students, Lanyan Ding
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The present study uses a cross-sectional method of subgrouping and examines the influence of peer pressure on college students’ alcohol use in China. A total of 951 undergraduate students (freshman, sophomore, and junior) from a university in central China volunteered to fill out questionnaires in convenient classrooms. The extent of perceived peer pressure and corresponding drinking behavior were examined separately in subpopulations categorized by gender and peer groups (History major and Physical Education major). The mediational role of alcohol self-regulation self-efficacy on pressure- drinking association was also examined.
Results have indicated gender differences and subgroup differences (HIST and PE) for …

China-Based Industrial Espionage, Joel Savary
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
On Oct 8, 2014 China has surpassed the United States as the world’s largest economy in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)” (IMF). My paper explores one of the instances of unlawful business practices that have contributed to China’s new world position. China based espionage undercuts American businesses and U.S. foreign policy directly, causing catastrophic economic implications for America, its businesses, and its allies. The U.S. government is grappling with the means and methods China uses to disseminate information stolen from U.S. businesses to support China based industries. Due to the lack of transparency in China, it has been difficult …

Studying seed dormancy and its consequent effect can provide important information for vegetation restoration and management. The present study investigated seed dormancy, seedling emergence and seed survival in the soil seed bank of Stipa bungeana, a grass species used in restoration of degraded land on the Loess Plateau in northwest China. Dormancy of fresh seeds was determined by incubation of seeds over a range of temperatures in both light and dark. Seed germination was evaluated after mechanical removal of palea and lemma (hulls), chemical scarification and dry storage. Fresh and one-year-stored seeds were sown in the field, and seedling …

China's Nine-Dashed Map: Maritime Source Of Geopolitical Tension, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
The South China Sea (SCS) is becoming an increasingly contentious source of geopolitical tension due to its significance as an international trade route, possessor of potentially significant oil and natural gas resources, China’s increasing diplomatic and military assertiveness, and the U.S.’ recent and ongoing Pacific Pivot strategy. Countries as varied as China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and other adjacent countries have claims on this region’s islands and natural resources. China has been particularly assertive in asserting its SCS claims by creating a nine-dash line map claiming to give it de facto maritime control over this entire region without regard to …

Four new species of Desmoxytes are described from southern China: D. lingulata sp. n., D. parvula sp. n., and D. nodulosa sp. n., from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and D. getuhensis sp. n. from Guizhou Province. In addition, new records of D. scutigeroides Golovatch, Geoffroy & Mauriès, 2010 and D. scolopendroides Golovatch, Geoffroy & Mauriès, 2010 are provided, with a modified key to Desmoxytes species currently known to occur in China. Two of the new species, D. nodulosa sp. n. and D. getuhensis sp. n., seem to be troglobites.

The Pivot: American Involvement In Asia, Marisa Tillman
The Pivot: American Involvement In Asia, Marisa Tillman
Honors Student Works
Part I: On November 17th, 2011, President Obama addressed the Australian parliament and presented a plan to shift American attention towards the Asia-Pacific region (Beitelman 2012, 1086). This is a policy known as the Pivot, which represents one of the most important issues of our time: that of America’s relations with China. China is becoming a much more powerful and important player in global politics and global economy, in fact China is growing at a faster rate than any other country in history (Schake 2014). The Pivot looks to lock in a substantially increased investment in the Asia Pacific region …

Hagiography & Historicity: Li Wenyu's Quanhuo Ji Account Of The 1900 Siege Of Beitang, Anthony E. Clark
History Faculty Scholarship
By 1879 the Shanghai Jesuit, Li Wenyu, SJ, 李問漁 (1840-1911) had distinguished himself as one of Shanghai’s leading writers and editors; he had established both Yiwenlu, 益聞錄 Shanghai’s third newspaper, and the Gezhixinbao, 格致新報 the area’s most popular scientific journal. Less famous, though habitually consulted by historians of China’s turbulent Boxer era (1898-1900), was his protracted and hagiographic narrative of Boxer violence, the Quanhuoji 拳禍記. Li’s meticulous collection of witness testimonies and documentary materials recounting Boxer incidents remains an often-cited source in present historical research; this paper examines the historical reliability of his Quanhuoji, first published in 1905. Careful scrutiny …
Assessment Of Economic Loss In China From Water Pollution In Chong Ming County Near The Yangtze Estuary, Xiaoli Zhang
Assessment Of Economic Loss In China From Water Pollution In Chong Ming County Near The Yangtze Estuary, Xiaoli Zhang
Working Papers
It is well-known that the water pollution of the Yangtze River basin is significant. Studies have shown that from the upper river to the lower river, the water volume decreases, the intensity of development is higher, and the pollution is more profound. Studies also find that pollution is even more significant in transboundary areas at the intersection of provinces and large cities. The Yangtze Estuary lies at the end of the lower river of the Yangtze River, where the waters flow directly into the East China Sea. The location is also at the transboundary cross-section of Jiangsu Province and Shanghai. …

Urban (R)Evolutions: Museums, Spectacle, And Development In Reform Era China, Hope St. John

Over the past thirty years, China’s museum sector has experienced exponential growth with the expansion of thousands of new museums, both public and private. This paper seeks to understand this growth as an urban phenomenon that is simultaneously reconfiguring urban space and citizen subjectivities by framing the emergence of new and increasingly spectacular exhibitory institutions in China within the context of political, economic, and cultural policy shifts. Through the examination of the evolution of the museum in China and its symbolic relevance from its origins in an era of semi-colonialism into the contemporary period and recent trends of property-led redevelopment, …

Studies have found that when a U.S. issuer lists abroad on a foreign exchange, its shares exhibit negative abnormal returns. This negative movement may be because the market expects that the foreign listing will facilitate undetectable insider trading on the foreign exchange or other conduct impermissible in the United States.
Public-Private Partnership: The Chinese Dilemma, Henry S. Gao
Public-Private Partnership: The Chinese Dilemma, Henry S. Gao
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
As noted by Greg Shaffer in his book ‘Defending Interests: Public-Private Partnerships in WTO Litigation’, the US and EU have different approaches to public-private partnership in dealing with foreign trade barriers: the former tends to be more ‘bottom-up’, while the latter tends to be ‘top-down’. Inspired by Shaffer’s work, this article examines China’s experience in establishing public-private partnership. Initially, China appeared to prefer the American approach by adopting the Rules on Trade Barrier Investigation (TBI), which empowers domestic firms to petition the government directly to launch investigation against foreign trade barriers. However, since 2005, China seems to have shifted to …
