Quantity And Capacity Expansion Decisions For Ethanol In Nebraska And A Medium Sized Plant, Mahsa Khoshnoud
Quantity And Capacity Expansion Decisions For Ethanol In Nebraska And A Medium Sized Plant, Mahsa Khoshnoud
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Corn-based ethanol is the leader of sustainable sources of energy in the United States due to the abundance of corn and the popularity of ethanol-gasoline mixes. Over the past decade, ethanol production has risen from 1.5 million gallons in 1999 to 13 million gallons in 2011. This increase in production requires expansion of ethanol plants. Since Nebraska is the second highest producer of ethanol, we focus our research on the expansion of ethanol plants in Nebraska.
The aim of this study is to develop an optimization model for capital investments in ethanol in Nebraska and a medium sized ethanol plant …
Buying And Selling Corn Silage Or Other High Moisture Feeds: Value The Feed Not The Water, Dillon Feuz, Clark Israelsen, Allen Young, Lyle Holmgren
Buying And Selling Corn Silage Or Other High Moisture Feeds: Value The Feed Not The Water, Dillon Feuz, Clark Israelsen, Allen Young, Lyle Holmgren
All Current Publications
Questions often arise among growers who have corn silage or alfalfa silage (haylage) to sell and dairy producers and feedlot operators who are looking to buy those feeds as to how to establish a fair price. Because of the high moisture content of these feeds (50-75% water) and other similar feeds (barley silage, oat silage, sorghum silage and wheat silage) the transportation costs are rather substantial relative to the value of the feed.

Synchrony Of Net Nitrogen Mineralization And Maize Nitrogen Uptake Following Applications Of Composted And Fresh Swine Manure In The Midwest U.S., Terrance D. Loecke, Cynthia A. Cambardella, Matt Liebman
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Understanding how the quality of organic soil amendments affects the synchrony of nitrogen (N) mineralization and plant N uptake is critical for optimal agronomic N management and environmental protection. Composting solid livestock manures prior to soil application has been promoted to increase N synchrony; however, few field tests of this concept have been documented. Two years of replicated field trials were conducted near Boone, Iowa to determine the effect of composted versus fresh solid swine manure (a mixture of crop residue and swine urine and feces produced in hoop structures) on Zea mays (maize) N uptake, in situ soil net …
Optimizing Greenhouse Corn Production: How Can Two-Spotted Spider Mites Be Controlled?, Robert Eddy, Daniel T. Hahn
Optimizing Greenhouse Corn Production: How Can Two-Spotted Spider Mites Be Controlled?, Robert Eddy, Daniel T. Hahn
Purdue Methods for Corn Growth
This publication describes our experiences controlling mites while conducting experiments to optimize greenhouse corn production. Controlled studies were not conducted, but we recommend cultural practices of water spray-offs of leaf undersides and the stripping lower leaves as the crop ages. Also recommended are applications of beneficial insect Phytoseiulus persimilis at very high rates. The rates are an update of our previous publication. Photos of the pest and cultural practices are provided.

Optimizing Greenhouse Corn Production: What Is The Best Pot Size?, Derek Gambrel, Robert Eddy, Daniel T. Hahn
Purdue Methods for Corn Growth
This publication describes studies conducted to determine best pot size for optimizing greenhouse corn production. We suggest a 2.2-gallon container without large drainage holes extending up the side of the pot. This represents an update of our previous recommendation of a smaller pot, after observing instability in row planting configurations. Photos are included of corn in various size pots.

Cambio Climático Reduciría Cultivos: El País Vería Una Baja De Entre Un 20% Y 50% En El Rendimiento Del Frijol, Maíz Y Sorgo, Por El Incremento En Las Temperaturas, Según Un Informe De La Universidad Estatal De Kansas, Rosa María Pastrán
INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

Use Of Partially Fenced Fields To Reduce Deer Damage To Corn, Aaron M. Hildreth, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Erin E. Blankenship, Kurt C. Vercauteren
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) damage agricultural crops, often leading to significant economic losses for farmers. We used poly-mesh fence with wings to separate good deer cover from agricultural fields where crop damage by deer occurred primarily along this edge. In these cases, complete enclosure of the field with fencing may be unnecessary. The design used a 2.13-m-high polypropylene mesh fence erected along the wooded edge of a field with either 50-m or 150-m wings extending perpendicular from the fence line and wooded habitat. Fences reduced deer damage in cornfields 13.5% (F1,6= ∞, P < 0.001). Average yield in fenced fields (10,211 kg/ha) was 1,708 kg/ha greater than in control fields, which, at US$0.155/kg, equals a net gain of US$265/ha. We found no difference in damage between fences with 50-m and 150-m wings (F …
Harvest Date Influence On Dry Matter Yield And Moisture Of Corn And Stover, Haibo Huang, Dan B. Faulkner, Larry L. Berger, Steven R. Eckhoff
Harvest Date Influence On Dry Matter Yield And Moisture Of Corn And Stover, Haibo Huang, Dan B. Faulkner, Larry L. Berger, Steven R. Eckhoff
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Harvest date greatly affects the biomass yield, moisture, and quality of corn and stover. Traditionally, corn and stover have been harvested at lower moisture levels. However, corn stover and grain can be more effectively utilized as animal feed and biomass-ethanol feedstock if they are collected before in-field dry down. This study determined dry matter yield, moisture content, and quality of corn and stover before, during, and after grain maturity in central Illinois. The two-year average kernel moisture was 37.4% (w.b.) when reaching physiological maturity. At the same time, the average stover moisture was 67.7% (w.b.). The dry matter yield of …

Superweeds And Suspect Seeds: Does The Genetically-Engineered Crop Deregulation Process Put American Agriculture At Risk, Margaret Sova Mccabe
Law Faculty Scholarship
The federal government’s regulatory approach to genetically engineered (GE) crops, known as “The Framework”, is now twenty-five years old. Despite two and half decades of a consistent regulatory regime, GE crop and food regulation remains controversial. This article suggests that regulatory science and its tenets of independence, transparency, and public science should guide reforms of The Framework so that it is an efficient and reliable regulatory system. The article has four parts: 1) it provides a brief overview of the history of GE crop regulation; 2)it describes the key attributes of The Framework and related regulatory documents, with particular focus …

Assessment Of Bird Damage To Sunflower And Corn In North Dakota, Megan E. Klosterman, George M. Linz, Anthony A. Slowik, William J. Bleier
USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
North Dakota is the top sunflower-producing state in the United States, annually harvesting about 404,686 ha (1 million acres). Since the early 2000s, corn also has become a major crop within the state due to increases in corn prices. Blackbirds (Icteridae) can cause significant damage to both ripening corn and sunflower. The National Sunflower Association considers blackbird depredation to be a key factor in the reduction in sunflower acreage in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR). In order to better quantify the amount of damage caused by blackbirds, we assessed blackbird damage to ripening sunflower and corn in 120 …
