What are the features of mobile phone graph along the time? How to model these features? What are the interpretation for the evolutional graph generation process? To answer the above challenging problems, we analyze a massive who-call-whom networks as long as a year, gathered from records of two large mobile phone communication networks both with 2 million users and 2 billion of calls. We examine the calling behavior distribution at multiple time scales (e.g. day, week, month and quarter), and find that the distribution is not only skewed with a heavy tail, but also changing at different time scales. How …

Historical Biogeography Of Nebraska Pronghorns (Antilocapra Americana), Justin D. Hoffman, Hugh H. Genoways, Rachel R. Jones
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Archeological and paleontological records indicate that the pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) have a history of at least 20,000 years of occurrence within the current boundaries of Nebraska. Pronghorns occurred throughout the state for much of its history. With the evidence at hand we concluded that the eastern boundary of the geographic distribution of the pronghorn south of the Niobrara River in Nebraska at the beginning of the 19th century was along the western perimeter of the eastern deciduous forest and tallgrass prairie. This excluded most of the easternmost tier of counties in the state. This geographic arrangement persisted throughout …

Is The Region Capable Of Meeting Increased Electricity Demand?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
Brazil's Säo Paulo state has suffered several major power failures this year, while the Venezuelan government has enacted rationing measures and begun importing electricity from Colombia. Meanwhile, Argentina's electricity consumption in May grew by 7.8 percent over the year prior, and the Chilean government has repeatedly said it will need to double its electricity generation capacity in the next 10 to 15 years. As Latin American economies continue to grow, how capable are they of meeting electricity demand? Are power shortages likely to hamper growth and, if so, where? What role should the state play in developing the power sector, …

The piece begins with the proposition that the economic perspective on human activity must reflect the fact that human beings transact in a world defined for the actors by social norms. An analysis of the crisis of 2008 is offered as a demonstration of the value of adopting such a broader perspective. Part two offers a historical model based on Adam Smith’s Moral Philosophy of such a broader analysis. The piece closes with the case that the history of ideas offers alternative perspectives on the questions we explore in economics today and thus can serve as a valuable resource for …
How Will Changes To U.S. Ethanol Subsidies Affect Brazil?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
How Will Changes To U.S. Ethanol Subsidies Affect Brazil?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
Last month, U.S. senators introduced competing legislation regarding the ethanol producer subsidy and import tariff, which are set to expire this year. A bill proposed by Democrat Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) and Republican Tom Coburn (Okla.) would eliminate the 45-cent subsidy for ethanol producers and 54-cent tariff for ethanol imports, while legislation from R Senators Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) and Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) would sharply reduce, but still retain, the measures. What are the advantages and drawbacks of the bills and is one likely to pass? How would the legislation affect the ethanol industry? Does Brazil have the infrastructure and capacity to …

What Trends Are Shaping The Future Of Biofuels?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
Biodiesel production in Argentina this year is expected to climb 60 percent as compared to 2010. Meanwhile, in Brazil, industry leaders have called the biofuels sector "ripe for consolidation" as it needs to increase capacity and the country recently signed cooperation agreements with the United States to advance aviation biofuels. Meanwhile, high food prices have led to criticism that producing biofuels, especially from corn ethanol in the United States, diverts agricultural production from food crops. How will the development of biofuels play out in Brazil and elsewhere in the Americas? What are the most viable solutions for the food vs. …

How Will New Tariffs Affect Venezuela's Oil Industry?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
On April 21, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez announced drastic changes to windfall oil tax rates, hiking the tax from 60 percent to 95 percent when oil prices surpass $100 per barrel. The new legislation also raises the taxes to 80 percent when oil prices are between $70-90 per barrel and 90 percent when prices are between $90-100 per barrel. The government has since sought to reassure investors, saying that companies will only pay the higher rates after they recoup their original investment. How are the new taxes likely to affect investment in the country's oil sector in the short- and …

Is Venezuela Facing Another Electricity Crisis?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
On April 7, a fire damaged a power line in Venezuela and caused the country's worst blackout since 2009. Top government officials were adamant that Venezuela is now better equipped than in 2009-10 when electricity shortages crimped the economy during a severe drought. However, the recent outage came amid a series of power shortages since March that industry analysts and business owners claim are hampering production. Does the Venezuelan government have the situation under control or is the electricity crisis likely to repeat itself? What steps should be taken to fix the electricity grid? Will the country be able to …

Physical Habitat And Social Conditions Across A Coral Reef Shape Spatial Patterns Of Intraspecific Behavioral Variation In A Demersal Fish, Meagan N. Schrandt, Kristin M. Hardy, Kaitlin M. Johnson, Sean C. Lema
Biological Sciences
As coral reef ecosystems decline in health worldwide, reef-associated fishes are being impacted by changes to their coral reef habitats. While previous studies have shown coral reef structure to affect the demography of reef fishes, changes in reef conditions may also impact the behavior of reef fishes as they cope with altered habitats. In this study, we examined spatial patterns of intraspecific behavioral variation in the bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus) across the fringing reefs of Curaçao (Caribbean Sea), and explored how this behavioral variation associated with physical and social conditions on the reef. Principal components analysis (PCA) condensed …

Background
West Virginia has the worst oral health in the United States, but the reasons for this are unclear. This pilot study explored the etiology of this disparity using culture-independent analyses to identify bacterial species associated with oral disease.
Methods
Bacteria in subgingival plaque samples from twelve participants in two independent West Virginia dental-related studies were characterized using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and Human Oral Microbe Identification Microarray (HOMIM) analysis. Unifrac analysis was used to characterize phylogenetic differences between bacterial communities obtained from plaque of participants with low or high oral disease, which was further evaluated using clustering and Principal …

We conducted a statistical analysis to characterize the influence of large-scale and local environmental factors on presence-absence, concentration, and assemblage structure of larval fish within the northern California Current (NCC) ecosystem, based on samples collected at two nearshore stations along the Newport Hydrographic line off the central Oregon coast. Data from 1996 to 2005 were compared with historical data from the 1970s and 1980s to evaluate pseudo-decadal, annual, and seasonal variability. Our results indicate that the most abundant taxa from 1996 to 2005 differ from those of earlier decades. Concentrations of the dominant taxa and total larvae were generally greater …

Sixteen states and the District of Columbia currently permit the medical use of marijuana, yet state statutes fail to account for the challenges that confront municipal planners and officials whose agenda includes public health, safety and welfare of residents, including minor children. The intensity of the problem is perhaps most evident in Los Angeles, where there are approximately 800 dispensaries. Varying statutory approaches are provided for individuals to legitimately acquire the drug - they may grow it themselves, they may obtain it from their primary caregiver, or they may obtain it from a licensed dispensary. This raises a number of …

We use GEOS-Chem chemical transport model simulations of sulfate–ammonium aerosol data from the NASA ARCTAS and NOAA ARCPAC aircraft campaigns in the North American Arctic in April 2008, together with longer-term data from surface sites, to better understand aerosol sources in the Arctic in winter–spring and the implications for aerosol acidity. Arctic pollution is dominated by transport from mid-latitudes, and we test the relevant ammonia and sulfur dioxide emission inventories in the model by comparison with wet deposition flux data over the source continents. We find that a complicated mix of natural and anthropogenic sources with different vertical signatures is …

How Well Do Predators Adjust To Climate-Mediated Shifts In Prey Distribution? A Study On Australian Water Pythons, Beata Ujvari, Rick Shine, Thomas Madsen
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Climate change can move the spatial location of resources critical for population viability, and a species resilience to such changes will depend upon its ability to flexibly shift its activities away from no-longer-suitable sites to exploit new opportunities. Intuition suggests that vagile predators should be able to track spatial shifts in prey availability, but our data on water pythons (Liasis fuscus) in tropical Australia suggest a less encouraging scenario. These pythons undergo regular long-range (to .10 km) seasonal migrations to follow flooding-induced migrations by their prey (native dusky rats, Rattus colletti ). However, when an extreme flooding event virtually eliminated …
