NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

A revealing visit to France last month by President Sebastián Piñera has reignited a long smoldering debate in Chile over the "nuclear option." Careful not to endorse the possibility outright, the Chilean leader nevertheless make it clear during an Oct. 20 stopover in Paris that, with the benefit of some French know-how, nuclear power plants may eventually be in the cards for Chile." Chile has to prepare itself for the world of nuclear energy," Piñera said following a meeting with his French counterpart President Nicolas Sarkozy. "Our government has the obligation to prepare our engineers, scientists, and technical workers." The …

How will the prospect of drilling 50 miles from the Florida Keys affect Cuba's relationship with the United States?

Analysis Of Transformer Ratings In A Wind Farm Environment, John Mccarthy Oct 2010

Analysis Of Transformer Ratings In A Wind Farm Environment, John Mccarthy

ME in Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems

The grid connection transformer is one of the most expensive components of a wind farm development. If a transformer is under-utilised, this indicates that the initial capital outlay on the transformer was excessive. Overloading can lead to accelerated aging and increased losses. This project will investigate whether it is possible, by understanding the load profiles and stress conditions in a wind farm environment, to overload a transformer above its nameplate rating, thus reducing the capital outlay costs in developing a wind farm. The paper will investigate a specific wind farm overloading scenario and examine whether it is feasible, and financially …

Nicaragua: Energy-Hungry Country Opts For Large-Scale Hydro Dam, Noticen

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

In an effort to diversify its heavily fossil-fuel-dependent electricity sector and at the same time meet rising demand, Nicaragua is putting its eggs in the hydroelectricity basket, opting for conventional large-scale dams despite growing international awareness about their social and environmental drawbacks. Currently about 80% of Nicaragua's electricity comes from petroleum-burning generating plants, making the impoverished, non-oil-producing Central America nation particularly vulnerable to external market factors. Sky-high oil prices put a serious crimp in electricity production in 2006, when Nicaragua suffered periodic blackouts. Nowadays, the problem has more to do with supply, as delays in shipments of subsidized oil from …
