From Peasants To Farmers: Peasant Differentiation, Labor Regimes, And Land-Rights Institutions In China's Agrarian Transition, Q. Forrest Zhang, John A. Donaldson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The development of factor markets has opened Chinese agriculture for the penetration of capitalism. This new round of rural transformation—China’s agrarian transition— raises the agrarian question in the Chinese context. This study investigates how capitalist forms and relations of production transform agricultural production and the peasantry class in rural China. The authors identify six forms of nonpeasant agricultural production, compare the labor regimes and direct producers’ socioeconomic statuses across these forms, and evaluate the role of China’s land-rights institution in shaping these forms. The empirical investigation presents three main findings: (1) Peasant differentiation : capitalist forms of agricultural production differentiate …

In What Format And Under What Timeframe Would China Take On Climate Commitments? A Roadmap To 2050, Zhongxiang Zhang Oct 2010

In What Format And Under What Timeframe Would China Take On Climate Commitments? A Roadmap To 2050, Zhongxiang Zhang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In what format and under what timeframe China would take on climate commitments is of significant relevance to China because it is facing great pressure both inside and outside international climate negotiations to exhibit greater ambition and is being confronted with the threats of trade measures. It is of significant global relevance as well because when China’s emissions peak is crucial to determine when global emissions would peak and because what China is going to do in what format has significant implications for the level and ambition of commitments from other countries. In response to these concerns and to put …

What Is The Future Of The Cuban Oil Industry?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor Oct 2010

What Is The Future Of The Cuban Oil Industry?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

Spanish company Repsol YPF SA has leased several offshore blocks from the Cuban government and is expected to begin drilling for oil and gas next year. Cuba currently imports the majority of its energy from Venezuela but experts suggest that untapped reserves on the country's northern coast may yield enough oil to wean Cuba off dependence on Venezuela. What issues does the Cuban government face in its bid to develop its oil industry? What are the implications for the Cuban economy? How will the prospect of drilling 50 miles from the Florida Keys affect Cuba's relationship with the United States?

Effects Of Experimental Nitrogen Additions On Plant Diversity In An Old-Growth Tropical Forest, Xiankai Lu, Jiangming Mo, Frank S. Gilliam, Guoyi Zhou, Yunting Fang Oct 2010

Effects Of Experimental Nitrogen Additions On Plant Diversity In An Old-Growth Tropical Forest, Xiankai Lu, Jiangming Mo, Frank S. Gilliam, Guoyi Zhou, Yunting Fang

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Response of plant biodiversity to increased availability of nitrogen (N) has been investigated in temperate and boreal forests, which are typically N-limited, but little is known in tropical forests. We examined the effects of artificial N additions on plant diversity (species richness, density and cover) of the understory layer in an N saturated old-growth tropical forest in southern China to test the following hypothesis: N additions decrease plant diversity in N saturated tropical forests primarily from N-mediated changes in soil properties. Experimental additions of N were administered at the following levels from July 2003 to July 2008: no addition (Control); …

Copenhagen And Beyond: Reflections On China’S Stance And Responses, Zhongxiang Zhang Sep 2010

Copenhagen And Beyond: Reflections On China’S Stance And Responses, Zhongxiang Zhang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

China had been singled out by Western politicians and media for dragging its feet on international climate negotiations at Copenhagen, the accusations previously always targeted on the U.S. To put such a criticism into perspective, this paper provides some reflections on China’s stance and reactions at Copenhagen. While China’s reactions are generally well rooted because of realities at home, some reactions could have been handled more effectively for a better image of China. The paper also addresses the reliability of China’s statistics on energy and GDP, the issue crucial to the reliability of China’s carbon intensity commitments. The paper discusses …

Assessing China’S Energy Conservation And Carbon Intensity: How Will The Future Differ From The Past?, Zhongxiang Zhang Sep 2010

Assessing China’S Energy Conservation And Carbon Intensity: How Will The Future Differ From The Past?, Zhongxiang Zhang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

As an important step towards building a “harmonious society” through “scientific development”, China has incorporated for the first time in its five-year economic plan an energy input indicator as a constraint. While it achieved a quadrupling of its GDP while cutting its energy intensity by about three quarters between 1980 and 2000, China has had limited success in achieving its own 20% energy-saving goal set for 2010 to date. Despite this great challenge at home, just prior to the Copenhagen climate summit, China pledged to cut its carbon intensity by 40-45% by 2020 relative its 2005 levels to help to …

China And Geography In The 21st Century: A Cultural (Geographical) Revolution?, Lily Kong Sep 2010

China And Geography In The 21st Century: A Cultural (Geographical) Revolution?, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A noted Singapore-based cultural geographer and specialist on Asia reviews the recent emergence of cultural geographic research on and within China and the implications of China's rise for the study of 21st century cultural geography more broadly. She identifies six major issues modern China is confronting that, when addressed from a cultural geographical perspective, may both enhance an understanding of the country and reshape the practice of cultural geography as a subdiscipline: agricultural reform, economic reform, urban change, rural-urban migration and related social inequalities, the changing family structure, and environmental change. The author argues that if China's cultural geography is …

China's Innovation Landscape, Kenneth G. Huang Aug 2010

China's Innovation Landscape, Kenneth G. Huang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The People's Republic of China has experienced three decades of sustained, strong annual economic growth as it transitions from a centrally planned economy to a free market. Currently the world's second largest economy, China recognizes scientific and technological innovation as an increasingly important strategy to fuel the next phase of its productivity growth. However, the drivers and trajectories of China's scientific and technological growth remain under-investigated. To understand elements of China's innovative activities, particularly in science and technology, an analysis of comprehensive patent data provided by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) of China is presented here.

Assessing The Export Competitiveness Of Chinese Industries, Marc Fetscherin, Ilan Alon, James P. Johnson Jun 2010

Assessing The Export Competitiveness Of Chinese Industries, Marc Fetscherin, Ilan Alon, James P. Johnson

Faculty Publications

This article presents a framework for measuring, illustrating and comparing industry export competitiveness that takes into account (i) industry specialization, (ii) industry export growth rate and (iii) relative industry size. We apply the framework to a data set of 97 different industries from China over a 5-year period (2001–2005). According to our results, over 70 per cent of Chinese industries are ‘dynamic’, meaning that their export growth is higher than the world average export growth. Almost 50 per cent of the Chinese industries examined are competitive in global markets, with 20–25 per cent of the world export market share in …

China In The Transition To A Low-Carbon Economy, Zhongxiang Zhang Jun 2010

China In The Transition To A Low-Carbon Economy, Zhongxiang Zhang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

China, from its own perspective cannot afford to, and from an international perspective, is not allowed to continue on the conventional path of encouraging economic growth at the expense of the environment. The country needs to transform its economy to effectively address concern about a range of environmental problems from burning fossil fuels and steeply rising oil import and international pressure to exhibit greater ambition in fighting global climate change. This paper first discusses China’s own efforts towards energy saving and pollutants cutting, the widespread use of renewable energy and participation in clean development mechanism, and puts carbon reductions of …

The Causes Of Corruption: Evidence From China, Bin Dong, Benno Torgler Jun 2010

The Causes Of Corruption: Evidence From China, Bin Dong, Benno Torgler

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this study we explore in detail the causes of corruption in China using two different sets of data at the regional level (provinces and cities). We observe that regions with more anti-corruption efforts, histories of British rule, higher openness, more access to media and relatively higher wages of government employees are markedly less corrupt; while social heterogeneity, regulation, abundance of resource and state-owned enterprises substantially breed regional corruption. Moreover, fiscal decentralization is discovered to depress corruption significantly, while administrative decentralization fosters local corruption. We also find that there is currently a positive relationship between corruption and economic development in …

The Consequences Of Corruption: Evidences From China, Bin Dong, Benno Torgler Jun 2010

The Consequences Of Corruption: Evidences From China, Bin Dong, Benno Torgler

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

With complementary Chinese data sets and alternative corruption measures, we explore the consequences of corruption. Adopting a novel approach we provide evidence that corruption can have both, positive and negative effects, on economic development. The overall impact of corruption might be the balance of the two simultaneous effects within a specific institutional environment (“grease the wheels” and “sand the wheels”). Corruption is observed to considerably increase income inequality in China. We also find that corruption strongly reduces tax revenue. Looking at things from an expenditure point of view we observe that corruption significantly decreases government spending on education, R&D and …

The Communication Model And The Nature Of Change In Terms Of Deforestation In China Since 1949, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao Jun 2010

The Communication Model And The Nature Of Change In Terms Of Deforestation In China Since 1949, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao

Communication Faculty Publications

This article explores the communication model and nature of change in terms of deforestation in China since 1949. Through Lasswell’s communication model and the theory of change and via historical analysis and extended literature review, we have discovered: First, Mao’s government adopted an effective one-way top-down communication model with Chinese characteristics during 1949 and 1978, which facilitated deforestation in China leading to massive economic dislocation and immense waste of resources. Second, the Chinese government’s change to practical ideology brought about new administrative practices of enacting forest protection laws and reorientating the relevant workforces to use available technologies for the production …

Publications and Research

Background: Birth weight is negatively associated with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, but the associations are less well-established in developing populations where birth weight is often unavailable. We studied the association of birth weight and cardiovascular risk, using birth rank as an instrumental variable, in Southern China.

Methods: We used published data on birth weight by birth rank from an appropriate population and baseline data from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study phases 2 & 3 (2005-8) to examine the adjusted associations, using instrumental variable analysis, of birth weight with clinically measured cardiovascular risk factors and the metabolic syndrome in older …

Examining The Differences Between Taiwanese And Chinese Manager In Effectiveness Of Leading Change, Yu Jen (Dennis) Hsiao Apr 2010

Examining The Differences Between Taiwanese And Chinese Manager In Effectiveness Of Leading Change, Yu Jen (Dennis) Hsiao

Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects

Under different social backgrounds for the past decades, Taiwan and China are similar yet different. In this study, the researcher seeks to identify the relationship between the culturally differentiated manager and their perceived effectiveness in leading change. Using a qualitative approach, the researcher had found differences between Chinese managers’ and Taiwanese managers’ perception in leading change. Some aspects of these differences also suggested that Taiwanese managers might find difficulties implementing change inside their international joint venture in Mainland China.
