An Examination Of The Danish Immigrant-Trade Link, Roger White
An Examination Of The Danish Immigrant-Trade Link, Roger White
Economics
This paper investigates the influence of immigrants on Danish imports and exports. As public and political debates concerning immigration policy are expected to continue, the findings presented here provide valuable information. Prior to 2002, Denmark’s immigration policy was among the most liberal in Europe. However, concerns regarding terrorism, social services depletion, and detrimental labour market effects, all purported to stem from immigration, led the Danish government to severely tighten its policy. In examining Denmark, we explore the immigrant-trade relationship in a small host country that is globally well-integrated, open to trade, and proximate to both major trading partners and primary …
Trade, Technique And Composition Effects: What Is Behind The Fall In World-Wide So2 Emissions 1990-2000?, Jean-Marie Grether, Nicole Andréa Mathys, Jaime De Melo
Trade, Technique And Composition Effects: What Is Behind The Fall In World-Wide So2 Emissions 1990-2000?, Jean-Marie Grether, Nicole Andréa Mathys, Jaime De Melo
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Combining unique data bases on emissions with sectoral output and employment data, we study the sources of the fall in world-wide SO2 emissions and estimate the impact of trade on emissions. Contrarily to concerns raised by environmentalists, an emission-decomposition exercise shows that scale effects are dominated by technique effects working towards a reduction in emissions. A second exercise comparing the actual trade situation with an autarky benchmark estimates that trade, by allowing clean countries to become net importers of emissions, leads to a 10% increase in world emissions with respect to autarky in 1990, a figure that shrinks to 3.5% …
Risk, Trade, Recovery And The Consideration Of Real Options: The Imperative Coordination Of Policy, Marketing, And Finance In The Wake Of Catastrophe, Mark R. Manfredo, Clifford J. Shultz
Risk, Trade, Recovery And The Consideration Of Real Options: The Imperative Coordination Of Policy, Marketing, And Finance In The Wake Of Catastrophe, Mark R. Manfredo, Clifford J. Shultz
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Recovery from societal and market catastrophe is a daunting process requiring multi-function, systemic, and long-term efforts. Humanitarian aid and donor assistance rarely are sufficient. Trade and other forms of direct investment in devastated markets offer another kind of recovery-assistance. Risks encountered in recovering economies however can deter firms wishing to invest. A real options framework is applied to examine the financial feasibility of trading with recovering economies; the framework is applied to the countries of the war-disintegrated, former Yugoslavia. The real options framework considers the value of managerial flexibility in the presence of risks. Implications for policy, marketing management and …
China And Latin America: A Match Made In Trade Heaven Or Dependency Reloaded?, Meghan Skira
China And Latin America: A Match Made In Trade Heaven Or Dependency Reloaded?, Meghan Skira
Senior Honors Projects
China’s economy is expanding rapidly, and the emerging powerhouse is searching for energy resources, raw materials, and markets to maintain its economic growth. China has shown an insatiable appetite for Latin American natural resources, commodities, and agricultural products, from oil to lumber to copper to soybeans. Trade values between the two regions increased greatly from $1.3 billion in 1980 to about $13 billion in 2000 to over $50 billion in 2005. Latin America has the raw materials that China needs to fuel its economic expansion and offers a large market for cheap Chinese manufactured goods. Many analysts claim that Sino-Latin …

Feed Grains Backgrounder, Linwood Hoffman, Allen Baker, Linda Foreman, C. Edwin Young
Feed Grains Backgrounder, Linwood Hoffman, Allen Baker, Linda Foreman, C. Edwin Young
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The U.S. feed grain sector, largest of the major U.S. field crops, faces unprecedented demand conditions. The size and speed of the expanding use of corn by the ethanol industry is raising widespread issues throughout the U.S. agricultural sector. Debate is ongoing over the use of grain for fuel instead of for food or feed and the adequacy of future grain supplies. Increased productivity (yield) and additional area from land planted to competing crops, land enrolled in conservation programs, or idled land is expected to provide an increased supply of feed grains. In 2003, U.S. feed grain farms had an …

Trade Reforms And Breakpoints In Australia's Manufactured Trade: An Application Of The Zivot And Andrews Model, Kankesu Jayanthakumaran, Mosayeb Pahlavani, Frank V. Neri
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Trade liberalization is expected to increase imports but also exports via reduced input costs and increased domestic competition. This paper investigates whether this is the case for Australian manufactured goods. We begin by briefly describing the trends in the effective rate of protection, imports and exports in Australia over the last 30 years and then investigate the existence of major structural breaks in the imports and exports series by applying the Zivot and Andrews (1992 )test, using annual time series data from 1968/69 to 2003/2004. We find that a significant structural break occurred for imports in 1988/1989, which coincides with …
Taming The Dragon: China's Experience In The Wto Dispute Settlement System, Henry Gao
Taming The Dragon: China's Experience In The Wto Dispute Settlement System, Henry Gao
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
To many observers, a major challenge raised by China's accession to the WTO is whether the WTO dispute settlement system could cope with China, one of the major traders in the world with an economy that is halfway between a planned economy and a market economy. In this article, the author tries to answer this question by reviewing China's experience in the WTO dispute settlement system. Historically, the senior leadership in China attached disproportionate importance to the WTO dispute settlement system and preferred to avoid using the system. Thus, in the first four cases in which China was sued or …
China's Participation In The Wto: A Lawyer's Perspective, Henry Gao
China's Participation In The Wto: A Lawyer's Perspective, Henry Gao
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
On 10 November 2001, China finally acceded to the World Trade Organization (WTO) after a marathon negotiation spanning 15 years. China's membership in the WTO raises interesting questions for both the WTO and China. For the WTO, the question is how to deal with China?a huge country of growing importance as a major global exporter and importer but is still in economic transition. For China, the question is how to implement the numerous obligations in the WTO accession package. This paper sets out by reviewing China's experience in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the WTO. It …

Analysis Of American And Canadian Cross-Border Business Expansion In The Pacific Northwest, Brian Morgans
Analysis Of American And Canadian Cross-Border Business Expansion In The Pacific Northwest, Brian Morgans
Border Policy Research Institute Publications
American and Canadian markets rely on each other greatly, given the volume of trade that exists between the two nations. Companies of both nationalities see opportunity in business growth by accessing the market and establishing a physical presence in the other country. American firms which expanded into the Lower Mainland in British Columbia and Canadian firms which expanded into Whatcom County in Washington State were surveyed to identify reasons for, and obstacles to expansion. Canadian companies cited strategic value and benefits of proximity to British Columbia. American companies cited strategic positioning and labor availability as benefits in the expansion process. …
Service Time Variability At The Blaine, Washington, International Border Crossing And The Impact On Regional Supply Chains, Anne Victoria Goodchild, Susan Albrecht, Steven Globerman
Service Time Variability At The Blaine, Washington, International Border Crossing And The Impact On Regional Supply Chains, Anne Victoria Goodchild, Susan Albrecht, Steven Globerman
Border Policy Research Institute Publications
Service times at vehicle processing facilities (borders, weigh stations, landside marine port gates) are variable, thereby causing transportation planning challenges for carriers that visit them on a regular basis. Carriers must either build in more time than is necessary, therefore underutilizing their equipment, or risk missing delivery windows, which can result in fines or cause lost business opportunities. In this study, border crossing times at Blaine, Washington, are examined. The variability in crossing times at this border crossing, and the impact of this variability on regional supply chains is considered for bi-directional trade. Directional, daily, hourly, and seasonal variations are …
Diversity Of The Ports-Of-Entry Along The 49th Parallel, Border Policy Research Institute
Diversity Of The Ports-Of-Entry Along The 49th Parallel, Border Policy Research Institute
Border Policy Research Institute Publications
This article discusses some traits of the ports-of-entry arrayed along the Canada – U.S. land border. The article focuses upon that portion of the border commonly referred to as the “49th parallel,” omitting discussion of the Canada – Alaska border. Discussion is also focused solely upon the usage of the ports by personal vehicles. Our intent is to reveal something about the “border experience” over the past decade, spanning the period in which post-9/11 border security measures have been deployed. There has been commentary about the extent to which cross-border travel has diminished in response to the “hardening” of the …
Patents And Access To Antiretroviral Medicines In Vietnam After World Trade Organization Accession, Jakkrit Kuanpoth
Patents And Access To Antiretroviral Medicines In Vietnam After World Trade Organization Accession, Jakkrit Kuanpoth
Faculty of Law - Papers (Archive)
Antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, where they are accessible, have been shown to prolong the lives and increase the health and well-being of people living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. In general terms, whether a country is able to provide affordable ARVs to people in need is determined by the pricing structure of the drugs, whichis in turn based on the patent environment that regulates them. Increasing access in many developing countries, including Vietnam, requires a thorough understanding of the patent environment and of the legal options that will allow the production and/or importation of affordable treatments. This article provides an …

Wage Share, Globalization, And Crisis: The Case Of The Manufacturing Industry In Korea, Mexico, And Turkey, Özlem Onaran
PERI Working Papers
The aim of this paper is to analyze the changes in the wage share in manufacturing industry in Mexico, Turkey, and Korea in the era of globalization. The focus is on the one hand over the effects of globalization on the wage share , which are measured by the effects of international trade and FDI intensity of the economy. On the other hand, the process of opening up has been accompanied by major currency crises in most developing countries in the last decade, which has affected the wage share through exchange rate depreciation and economic recession. The paper develops a …
Composition Of Trade Between Australia And Latin America: Gravity Model, M. Cortes
Composition Of Trade Between Australia And Latin America: Gravity Model, M. Cortes
Faculty of Business - Economics Working Papers
This paper aims to analyse the value of merchandise through a broad category of trade between Australia and nine selected Latin American countries by using a gravity model focusing on the period from 1998 to 2004. The traditional cross-sectional data is a useful tool to understand this bilateral trade focusing on exports and imports through primary products, manufactured products, and total merchandise trade. The general thrust of the analysis regarding trade composition implies that Australian trade with Latin America has been shaped by political and economic variables. The trade of primary products is explained by economic distance, openness, population, and …
Chinese Rice Trade And Shipping From The North Vietnamese Port Of Hai Phong, Julia T. Martinez
Chinese Rice Trade And Shipping From The North Vietnamese Port Of Hai Phong, Julia T. Martinez
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
This overview of Chinese trade in northern Vietnam explores the role of the Chinese rice traders there, especially in Hải Phòng, and their connections with Hong Kong and southern China, during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It shows they were never mere colonial middlemen but economic actors with ties to German and English business interests as well as to the French. The article traces what various primary sources can tell us of their community and business history, as well as revealing the intricate business ties of Chinese rice exporters in colonial Hải Phòng with German shipping companies, up until …

Trade And The Environment In The Wto, Steve Charnovitz
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
The linkage between trade and the environment stands out as an important challenge in global economic governance. Over the past decade, the WTO devoted considerable attention to this issue and included it on the agenda of the Doha Round. In parallel, the jurisprudence on trade and the environment has experienced significant advances. This study provides an overview of the main institutional changes at the WTO and of the developments in the jurisprudence most relevant to the interaction between the environment and trade. Specifically, this study focuses on GATT Article XX and takes note of many positive (and a few negative) …

Claims Under The Administrative Procedure Act Before The Court Of International Trade — A General Overview And Analysis Of Significant Recent Jurisprudence, Mark A. Moran, Wentong Zheng
UF Law Faculty Publications
At first blush, the subject matter of this paper would seem a particularly anomalous topic for discussion at a conference devoted to the jurisprudence of the U.S. Court of International Trade (“CIT”). After all, among the some four thousand published decisions the CIT has issued since its creation in 1980, relatively few have involved causes of action predicated explicitly on the Administrative Procedure Act (“APA”). One might reasonably ask why we should bother devoting an entire panel discussion to an issue that so infrequently commands the CIT’s attention.
The first answer is that all is not as it seems, and …
