Pulse Charging Of Capacitor Bank By Explosive-Driven Shock Wave Ferroelectric Generator, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Evgueni F. Talantsev, Jason Baird, Allen H. Stults, Larry L. Altgilbers

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ultracompact explosive-driven shock wave ferroelectric generators (FEGs) were used as autonomous primary power sources for charging capacitor banks of different capacitance. The FEGs utilized longitudinal (when the shock wave propagates along the polarization vector P) shock wave depolarization of Pb(Zr52Ti48)O3 (PZT) polycrystalline ferroelectric ceramic. PZT disks having diameters ranging from 25 to 27 mm and three different thicknesses: 0.65, 2.1, and 5.1 mm. It was experimentally shown that during the charging process the FEGs were capable of producing pulsed power with peak amplitudes up to 0.3 MW. Results for charging voltage, electric charge transfer and …

Components Of Inclusion, Jodi Janssen Jan 2006

Components Of Inclusion, Jodi Janssen

Graduate Research Papers

As a special education teacher, I have always had a personal desire for inclusion to happen, and believed it could have benefits for all children of identified disabilities. After a recent transfer to a new school, the administration informed me I'd be teaching kindergarten with full inclusion for my special needs students. I was very excited about the prospect, but I was not armed with any solid information on how to approach a full inclusion model. As the school year progressed, my team and I forged ahead and I began researching what literature had to provide on the components needed …

The Importance Of Ehealth In The Education Of Underserved Populations, Shanel L. Winfield Jan 2006

The Importance Of Ehealth In The Education Of Underserved Populations, Shanel L. Winfield

Graduate Research Papers

The use of the Internet or the World Wide Web for educational purposes is widespread and rapidly growing. It is only natural that, in response to this rapid growth, its usage expands into the field of medicine, particularly eHealth. But as the nature of how the Internet is being used in health and medicine increases, there is a large segment of the population being left behind because of lack of access. This lack of access is in response to economic barriers, political barriers, social-cultural barriers and social-economic barriers. Issues of literacy, content, and language also play a role in the …

Kinematically Complete Experiment On Transfer Excitation In Intermediate-Energy P + He Collisions, Ahmad Hasan, B. Tooke, M. Zapukhlyak, T. Kirchner, Michael Schulz

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have performed a kinematically complete experiment on transfer excitation in intermediate-energy proton-helium collisions. The differential cross sections were compared to double excitation data and a nonperturbative time-dependent calculation. This comparison reveals the importance of dynamic couplings between the motion of the heavy nuclei and electronic transitions and/or electron-electron correlation effects.

Effects Of Current On Droplet Generation And Arc Plasma In Gas Metal Arc Welding, J. Hu, Hai-Lung Tsai Jan 2006

Effects Of Current On Droplet Generation And Arc Plasma In Gas Metal Arc Welding, J. Hu, Hai-Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In gas metal arc welding (GMAW), a technology using pulsed currents has been employed to achieve the one-droplet-per-pulse (ODPP) metal transfer mode with the advantages of low average currents, a stable and controllable droplet generation, and reduced spatter. In this paper, a comprehensive model was developed to study the effects of different current profiles on the droplet formation, plasma generation, metal transfer, and weld pool dynamics in GMAW. Five types of welding currents were studied, including two constant currents and three wave form currents. In each type, the transient temperature and velocity distributions of the arc plasma and the molten …

Plasma Modeling For Ultrashort Laser Ablation Of Dielectrics, Lan Jiang, Hai-Lung Tsai Jan 2006

Plasma Modeling For Ultrashort Laser Ablation Of Dielectrics, Lan Jiang, Hai-Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In ultrashort pulse (<10 ps) laser ablation of dielectrics, affected materials are first transformed into absorbing plasma with metallic properties and, then, the subsequent laser-plasma interaction causes material removals. For ultrashort-pulse laser ablation of dielectrics, this study proposes a model using the Fokker-Planck equation for electron density distribution, a plasma model for the optical properties of ionized dielectrics, and quantum treatments for electron heating and relaxation time. The free electron density distribution of the plasma within the pulse duration is then used to determine the ablation crater shape. The predicted threshold fluences and ablation depths for barium aluminum borosilicate and fused silica are in agreement with published experimental data. It is found that the significantly varying optical properties in time and space are the key factors determining the ablation crater shape. The effects of fluence and pulse duration are also studied.

Two graduate students conducted a small animal assisted therapy camp. The main goal for this camp was to enhance and promote the campers' socialization skills and self-esteem through the use of animal assisted therapy. Two pre and post measurement scales were used to evaluate the children's loneliness and self-concept. The campers participated in a one-week camp lasting approximately three hours a day. To meet desired lesson goals, the campers engaged in direct animal contact and specific animal assisted activities. The following is a complete description and reaction to the animal assisted therapy camp led by Trisha (Hobbiebrunken) Ames, Nicole Whisler, …

An Optimal Dynamic Inversion Approach For Controlling A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2006

An Optimal Dynamic Inversion Approach For Controlling A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Combining the principles of dynamic inversion and optimization theory, a new approach is presented for stable control of a class of one-dimensional nonlinear distributed parameter systems, assuming the availability a continuous actuator in the spatial domain. Unlike the existing approximate-then-design and design-then-approximate techniques, here there is no need of any approximation either of the system dynamics or of the resulting controller. Rather, the control synthesis approach is fairly straight-forward and simple. The controller formulation has more elegance because we can prove the convergence of the controller to its steady state value. To demonstrate the potential of the proposed technique, a …

Separation And Quantification Of N-Acetylcysteine-Amide (Naca) By Hplc With Fluorescence Detection, Wei Wu, Glenn Goldstein, Craig D. Adams, Richard H. Matthews, Nuran Ercal Jan 2006

Separation And Quantification Of N-Acetylcysteine-Amide (Naca) By Hplc With Fluorescence Detection, Wei Wu, Glenn Goldstein, Craig D. Adams, Richard H. Matthews, Nuran Ercal

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) is a well-known antioxidant that is capable of facilitating glutathione (GSH) biosynthesis and replenishing intracellular GSH under oxidatively challenging circumstances. N-acetyl-cysteine-amide (NACA), the amide form of NAC, is a newly designed and synthesized thiol-containing compound which is believed to be more lipophilic and permeable through cell membranes than NAC. The metabolic and antioxidant effects of these compounds in vitro and in vivo are under investigation. However, an analytical method that can separate and quantify both compounds simultaneously is not yet available, to the best of our knowledge. Because of their structural similarities, the two compounds are difficult to …

Effect Of Processing Conditions On Chemical Makeup Of Di-Isocyanate Crosslinked Silica Aerogels, Mary Ann B. Meador, Nicholas Leventis, Lynn A. Capadona, Plousia Vassilaras Jan 2006

Effect Of Processing Conditions On Chemical Makeup Of Di-Isocyanate Crosslinked Silica Aerogels, Mary Ann B. Meador, Nicholas Leventis, Lynn A. Capadona, Plousia Vassilaras

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sol-gel derived silica aerogels are attractive candidates for many unique thermal, optical, catalytic, and chemical applications1 because of their low density and high mesoporosity. However, their inherent fragility has restricted their use to, for example, insulation in extreme temperature environments such as Mars. We have previously reported crosslinking the mesoporous silica structure of an aerogel with di-isocyanates reacted with silanols on the surface,2,3 or epoxies reacting with an amine decorated silica surface.4 Either approach has been shown to significantly increase the strength of the aerogel with only a small effect on density or porosity. Thus, these hybrid materials may be …

Neural Network Control Of Spark Ignition Engines With High Egr Levels, A. Singh, Brian C. Kaul, J. A. Drallmeier, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Jonathan B. Vance Jan 2006

Neural Network Control Of Spark Ignition Engines With High Egr Levels, A. Singh, Brian C. Kaul, J. A. Drallmeier, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Jonathan B. Vance

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Research has shown substantial reductions in the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) concentrations by using 10% to 25% exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in spark ignition (SI) engines [1]. However under high EGR levels the engine exhibits strong cyclic dispersion in heat release which may lead to instability and unsatisfactory performance. A suite of neural network (NN)-based output feedback controllers with and without reinforcement learning is developed to control the SI engine at high levels of EGR even when the engine dynamics are unknown by using fuel as the control input. A separate control loop was designed for controlling EGR levels. The …
