On November 16, 2005, the Legislative Commission unanimously voted to approve hiring the Nevada Institute for Children’s Research and Policy (NICRP), School of Public Health, UNLV to study and evaluate governmental entities and private facilities that have physical custody of children pursuant to a court order and other public entities that provide for the care and supervision of children in the State of Nevada. One year after Katrina, New Orleans and the surrounding area are slowly showing signs of growth and a return to normalcy. Two recent studies provide excellent overviews of the economic impacts the hurricane had on the area as well as the efforts New Orleans has made to recover from the storm’s devastation. • Desert Research Institute completed two Mojave Desert Ecosystem Health Assessment (i.e., Vital Signs) workshops in August 2006. Public Lands Institute assisted in preparing the workshop opening presentation on behalf of the interagency team.
• Round 7 beta-test of the Phase I strategy delayed to the next quarter.

• The Desert Research Institute has completed one of two information collection (Vital Signs) workshops scheduled for May and August 2006.

• A short-term (Phase I) science and research strategy has been completed, with the initial beta-test scheduled for Round 7 proposals.
• Productive relationships with Clark County are being developed.
• Interagency Science and Research Team meetings are conducted approximately once per month.

Long time-horizon environmental risks with potential for global impacts have increased in visibility over the past several decades. Such issues as climate change, the nuclear fuel cycle, persistent synthetic chemicals, and stratospheric ozone depletion share some characteristics, including intergenerational impacts, strongly decoupled incidence of risks and benefits, substantial decision stakes and extreme uncertainty. What is not well understood are the similarities and differences among sources and implications of uncertainty among these global environmental threats, especially those associate with current and future human behavior.
