The Genetics Of Sex Determination In Stinging Nettle (Urtica Dioica), Robynn K. Shannon, Kent E. Holsinger Dec 2006

The Genetics Of Sex Determination In Stinging Nettle (Urtica Dioica), Robynn K. Shannon, Kent E. Holsinger

EEB Articles

Urtica dioica (“stinging nettle”) includes both dioecious and monoecious forms. In most sexually dimorphic angiosperm species, the genetic mechanisms of sex determination are completely unknown. The few species that include both monoecious and dioecious forms provide an unusual opportunity to examine the genetic mechanisms that underlie the separation of sexual functions, through crossing experiments and analysis of progeny segregation. Our focus is on the genetic mechanisms distinguishing monoecious and dioecious forms of U. dioica. A complicated picture of sex determination in this species has resulted from crosses between dioecious and monoecious subspecies, as well as between dioecious and monoecious forms ...

What Does Height Really Mean? Part Iv: Gps Orthometric Heighting, Thomas H. Meyer, Daniel R. Roman, David B. Zilkoski

Department of Natural Resources and the Environment Articles

This is the final paper in a four-part series examining the fundamental question, “What does the word height really mean?” The creation of this series was motivated by the National Geodetic Survey’s (NGS) embarking on a height modernization program as a result of which NGS will publish measured ellipsoid heights and computed Helmert orthometric heights for vertical bench marks. Practicing surveyors will therefore encounter Helmert orthometric heights computed from Global Positioning System (GPS) ellipsoid heights and geoid heights determined from geoid models as their published vertical control coordinate, rather than adjusted orthometric heights determined by spirit leveling. It is ...

Is There Propitious Selection In Insurance Markets?, Tsvetanka Karagoyozova, Peter Siegelman Nov 2006

Is There Propitious Selection In Insurance Markets?, Tsvetanka Karagoyozova, Peter Siegelman

Economics Working Papers

The theory of adverse selection in insurance markets has been enormously influential among scholars, regulators, and the judiciary. But empirical support for adverse selection has been much less persuasive, and several recent studies have found little or no evidence of such selection in insurance markets. "Propitious" (advantageous) selection offers an alternative mechanism that is consistent with these empirical findings. Like adverse selection, the theory assumes that insureds have an informational advantage over insurers. However, propitious selection relies on the plausible assumption that risk aversion is negatively correlated with the riskiness or probability of loss across insureds - the more risk-averse are ...

Are Shirking And Leisure Substitutable? An Empirical Test Of Efficiency Wages Based On Urban Economic Theory, Stephen L. Ross, Yves Zenou Nov 2006

Are Shirking And Leisure Substitutable? An Empirical Test Of Efficiency Wages Based On Urban Economic Theory, Stephen L. Ross, Yves Zenou

Economics Working Papers

Recent theoretical work has examined the spatial distribution of unemployment using the efficiency wage model as the mechanism by which unemployment arises in the urban economy. This paper extends the standard efficiency wage model in order to allow for behavioral substitution between leisure time at home and effort at work. In equilibrium, residing at a location with a long commute affects the time available for leisure at home and therefore affects the trade-off between effort at work and risk of unemployment. This model implies an empirical relationship between expected commutes and labor market outcomes, which is tested using the Public ...

Is The Compensation Model For Real Estate Brokers Obsolete?, Thomas J. Miceli, Katherine A. Pancak, C. F. Sirmans

Economics Working Papers

This study examines the traditional compensation model for real estate brokers under which both the listing and buyer brokers are paid by the seller based on a percentage of the property sales price. We argue that this model has not evolved to reflect contemporary legal agency relationships and technology-driven information availability. It therefore creates substantial transactional inefficiencies for buyers and sellers at both the matching and bargaining stages of a transaction. While there is evidence that market forces are pushing for a change in the status quo, there is also evidence that the brokerage industry is resisting this change by ...

Patient Safety Alert : A New Way To Share Patient Safety Information Among Departments And Units

Articles - Patient Care

Communication : If there is one topic that comes up over and over again as we discuss ways to make John Dempsey Hospital the safest hospital, it is “communication.” In fact, several of the 2006 and 2007 National Patient Safety Goals are centered around improving the effectiveness of communication among caregivers. There are many ways of doing this, and we have implemented several already. These include handoffs, medication reconciliation, “SBAR,” etc. On page two, we will talk in more detail about hand-offs and the use of “SBAR.”

Improving Health Literacy In Connecticut: A Prescription For Healthy Lives And Communities, Annamarie Beaulieu, Kimberly Lewendon, Christine Torres, Laurie Dechello

UCHC Graduate School Presentations

The Practicum Project is a supervised service-learning experience that integrates curriculum with hands-on experience in a public health setting. All 2nd year students are expected to work collaboratively in assessing the extent, causes and public health responses to a selected public health problem confronting citizens of Connecticut. The focal topic for the 2006 Project was Health Literacy in Connecticut.

During this past spring, 17 students of our program, working alongside and in partnership with more than 75 community-based stakeholders across Connecticut, completed over 1800 hours of service-learning in pursuit of answers to 3 questions:

Can the present and future burden ...

Costly Revenue-Raising And The Case For Favoring Import-Competing Industries, Xenia Matschke Oct 2006

Costly Revenue-Raising And The Case For Favoring Import-Competing Industries, Xenia Matschke

Economics Working Papers

A standard finding in the political economy of trade policy literature is that we should expect export-oriented industries to attract more assistance than import-competing industries. In reality, however, trade policy is heavily biased toward supporting import industries. This paper shows within a standard protection for sale framework, how the costliness of raising revenue via taxation makes trade subsidies less desirable and trade taxes more desirable. The model is then estimated and its predictions tested using U.S. tariff data. An empirical estimate of the costliness of revenue-raising is also obtained.

Interbank Markets Under Currency Boards, Marius Jurgilas Oct 2006

Interbank Markets Under Currency Boards, Marius Jurgilas

Economics Working Papers

This paper analyzes interbank markets under currency boards. Under such an environment, problematic endogeneity issues common to other monetary regimes do not arise. Using daily data from the interbank markets in Bulgaria and Lithuania we show, that contrary to the existing literature, overnight interest rates tend to decrease towards the end of the reserve holding period. Empirical results are supported by a finite horizon heterogeneous agents model showing that interest rates tend to decrease in the case of excess aggregate reserves in the banking system. Results contrast with Quir'os and Mendiz'abal (2006) who find that interest rates should ...

A Comparison Of Openurl Link Resolvers: The Results Of A University Of Connecticut Libraries Environmental Scan, Jill Livingston, Deborah Sanford, David Bretthauer

Published Works

This study examines the system architecture and capabilities of commercially available OpenURL link resolvers. These emerging technological tools are designed to increase use of library collections by automating the process of locating and accessing library holdings. Data for the study, largely experiential feedback received from libraries employing OpenURL link resolvers, was gathered through a series of evaluative activities. These included a preliminary literature review, Web survey, follow-up e-mail survey, and on-site visits to libraries. Results were analyzed within the context of the University of Connecticut Libraries’ resources and needs. Analysis revealed wide variation in library experiences with and perception of ...
