Computation Of Bit-Error Probabilities For Optical Receivers Using Thin Avalanche Photodiodes, Byonghyok Choi, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The large-deviation-based asymptotic-analysis and importance-sampling methods for computing bit-error probabilities for avalanche-photodiode (APD) based optical receivers, developed by Letaief and Sadowsky [IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, vol. 38, pp. 1162-1169, 1992], are extended to include the effect of dead space, which is significant in high-speed APDs with thin multiplication regions. It is shown that the receiver's bit-error probability is reduced as the magnitude of dead space increases relative to the APD's multiplication-region width. The calculated error probabilities and receiver sensitivities are also compared with those obtained from the Chernoff bound.

Ethical Marketing: A Look On The Bright Side, Thomas A. Klein, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick E. Murphy

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This article offers an alternative to conventional approaches to ethical analysis in business and marketing. We submit that studying companies with exemplary records of ethical conduct and social responsibility offers useful and compelling guidance to marketing students and managers. It provides another needed perspective beyond simply examining examples of misconduct or offering normative advice that may not reflect the specifics of corporate situations. Based on examples presented in a recent text by the authors and Better Business Bureau Torch Awardees, we present information on thirteen companies of varying size and from several different industries. That information includes ethics policies, management …

States Fight Predatory Lending Laws In Different Ways, Giang Ho, Anthony Pennington-Cross

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

To restrict predatory lending in the subprime (high cost) mortgage market, Congress enacted in 1994 the Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act (HOEPA). This law restricts some types of lending and requires lenders to disclose additional information about loans that have predatory features. Following the lead of federal regulations, at least 23 states, beginning with North Carolina in 1999, have introduced their own predatory lending laws, using HOEPA as a template.1

Perhaps not surprisingly, research focusing on the impact of the North Carolina law found that the rate of applications and originations for subprime loans declined after the law took …

Few students of Coleridge know the dark, mysterious poetry of the later years better than Eric Wilson. And even fewer have a stronger command of the scholarship on this poetry. Understandably, the work of the pre-1800 years, especially the great trio of the imaginative and the supernatural—The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Christabel, Kubla Khan—and the earlier conversation poems, have received major critical attention. Yet although these poems bring to the fore the troubling presence of Sara in “Eolian Harp” and the distressing violations of the Mariner and of the innocent Christabel by the serpent-woman Geraldine, …

Asian Americans On The Streets: Strategies For Prevention And Intervention, James Diego Vigil, Tomson H. Nguyen, Jesse Cheng

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Notably lacking in the literature on Vietnamese and Cambodian youth gangs in the United States and particularly Southern California have been solutions that address the underlying causative factors of gang involvement. Relying on life histories collected over a span of fifteen years, the authors propose a multi-faceted prevention and intervention strategy that includes the community and schools to heighten cultural awareness for children and parents. It is also recommended that policies take into account nuanced differences between Asian communities and bring together multiple stakeholders including officials and hard-core gang members to improve communicative problems that have resulted in gang-policy failures.

Government And Corporate Initiatives For Indian Women In It, Monica Adya Jan 2006

Government And Corporate Initiatives For Indian Women In It, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Education of women severely lags behind that of men in many developing nations. Fewer girls go to school, tend to drop out earlier than boys, do not receive the same level of education as their male counterparts, and often choose careers that are female predominant (Kelly, 1987). Without exception, India is quite representative of these gender-biased phenomena in education. However, the recent explosion of offshore outsourcing market in India has created a new recognition regarding the role of women in technological careers. The Indian IT sector has seen a trend contrary to what most western nations are experiencing—predominance of women …

R&D Investment Level And Environment As Predictors Of Firm Acquisition, Michael Heeley, David R. King, Jeffrey Covin Jan 2006

R&D Investment Level And Environment As Predictors Of Firm Acquisition, Michael Heeley, David R. King, Jeffrey Covin

Management Faculty Research and Publications

R&D investments contribute to the development of firm technology resources, and the possession of such resources often increases a firm’s attractiveness as a potential acquisition target. However, the value ascribed to a firm’s technology resources by would-be acquirers may be moderated by its industry’s environmental characteristics. Using data from 2886 firms, we find that investments in R&D predict acquisition likelihood and that R&D investments are most strongly associated with acquisition of firms under conditions of high environmental munificence and dynamism. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

Factors Influencing Girls' Choice Of Information Technology Careers, Monica Adya, Kate Kaiser Jan 2006

Factors Influencing Girls' Choice Of Information Technology Careers, Monica Adya, Kate Kaiser

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Many western nations have experienced declining numbers of women in the information technology (IT) workforce (Trauth, Nielsen, & von Hellens, 2003). Between 1996 and 2002, women in the U.S. IT workforce declined from 41% to 34.9% (ITAA, 2003). This can hamper diversity and reduce the talent pool that can address needs of diverse end-users (Florida & Gates, 2002). Why do women choose IT careers or reject them? Multidisciplinary research on career genderization reveals gender imbalance (Trauth, Nielsen, & von Hellens, 2003). Career decisions against math, science, and technology (MST) are often made as early as age 11 without understanding long-term …

We have found, through a series of recent experiments, encouraging evidence that the neuro-motor system is motivated to change motor patterns when exposed to visuo-motor tasks. We have also shown that the learning of these tasks can be heightened with forces and/or visual distortions that appropriately manipulate the error. This process does not require intense concentration and it is often considered a game. We describe the next generation of robotic large-workspace, three dimensional haptics/graphics systems for rehabilitation

European American Therapist Self-Disclosure In Cross-Cultural Counseling, Alan W. Burkard, Sarah Knox, Michael Groen, Maria Perez, Shirley Hess

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Eleven European American psychotherapists' use of self-disclosure in cross-cultural counseling was studied using consensual qualitative research. As reasons for self-disclosing, therapists reported the intent to enhance the counseling relationship, acknowledge the role of racism/oppression in clients' lives, and acknowledge their own racist/oppressive attitudes. Results indicated that therapists typically shared their reactions to clients' experiences of racism or oppression and that these self-disclosures typically had positive effects in therapy, often improving the counseling relationship by helping clients feel understood and enabling clients to advance to other important issues.

A Simple, Inexpensive, And Effective Light- Carrying Laryngoscopic Blade For Orotracheal Intubation Of Rats, Robert C. Molthen

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The research paradigm of using large laboratory animals, in which oroendotracheal intubations are relatively easy, is shifting toward the use of small animals, such as rodents, in which oropharyngeal access is limited, the arytenoid cartilage cycles are faster, and the glottis is much smaller. The considerable growth recently seen in preclinical imaging studies is accompanied by an increased number of rats and mice requiring in vivo intubation for airway management. Tracheal access is important for ventilation, administration of inhaled anesthetics, instillation of drugs or imaging agents, and maintenance of airway patency to reduce mortality during and after operations. I fashioned …
