Presented in the Winter 2005-2006 issue of the Global Resources Newsletter, the German-North American Resources Partnership issue. GNARP's Digital Libraries Working Group (DLWG) is tooling up to act as a sounding board and clearinghouse for collaborative projects that provide access, and add value, to materials sought by scholars. The spectrum of the group's activities can be summed up in the three verbs: recognizing, digitizing, advertising.

Developing a copyright educational program at a University can be a daunting task. Many professors do not want to hear the word in connection with their teaching or academic pursuits. It can strike fear in the hearts of many educators who have hidden behind the mask of ignorance for years. The biennial STS continuing education survey was conducted at the end of 2005, in collaboration with two other organizations of science librarians. The top continuing education needs of science librarians include new technologies, professional development and keeping current, institutional repositories/digital archives, promoting science information literacy, collaboration between faculty and librarians, and finding free high-quality online data. This paper describes the process of developing and administering the survey and discusses the survey results.

We discuss the electronic resource management (ERM) implementation process at Brigham Young University (BYU) and its generalized implications for other institutions. A chronological description of decision-making and steps in the implementation process with corresponding discoveries and benefits is outlined. We conclude that implementing an ERM takes a lot of planning, forethought and effort but implementation has been very beneficial in helping BYU manage its electronic resource collections. The literature has described various ERM systems, difficulties in handling electronic resources and the ERMI standard but relatively little has been written about the practical side of implementing an ERM. Statistical questions are some of the most frequent questions at any reference desk; they are also some of the most complicated questions to answer. There is an overflow of statistical information. Researchers usually consult a variety of private and government resources in order to find the right statistical information. A growing number of institutions are offering courses and degrees via distance education, however distance education librarianship is a relatively new and often less defined field of librarianship. This paper will present the results of a survey to discover career paths leading to distance education librarianship. During 2001-2002, a formal study was conducted jointly by Brigham Young University's Office of Planning and Assessment (OPA) and the Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) to determine the value of the library to the university community. The study described in this paper was undertaken at a time when some experts were predicting the demise of the academic library, and university administrators were questioning the need for new building, budget, and personnel requests. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to show that the idea and implementation of information commons is becoming more prevalent in the academic library community. Many of these have been implemented in what were once General Reference areas of libraries. This paper discusses the process and experience of the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University, including concept development, acceptance and implementation. IN the First quarter of 2003, employers took 1,508 mass layoff actions. this trend continues in 2005. there are many reasons for these layoffs, including bankruptcy, business ownership change, financial difficulty, reorganization, domestic or overseas relocation, model change over, product line discontinuation, weather-related reasons, and so on. The employment market is tight right now, and professionals are forced to expand their job searches beyond their geographic areas. Many professionals who have a family look for jobs in the suburbs, trying to avoid congestion and pollution. The U.S. Census shows an increase in nontraditional families also moving to the suburbs.
