A Content Analysis Of Costa Rican Ecolodge Websites, Michelle Millar, Gail Sammons Jan 2006

A Content Analysis Of Costa Rican Ecolodge Websites, Michelle Millar, Gail Sammons

Hospitality Management

The purpose of this study is to analyze the websites of a randomly selected group of Costa Rican ecolodges to determine how they are using their websites to market on the Internet. The study addresses the question of whether or not the ecolodges are using their websites to promote themselves as ecolodges, and if in fact they also promote ecotourism. Ecolodges are an important component of ecotourism and the success of ecotourism may depend on the success of the ecolodge. In the past, however, due to their remote location, it has been difficult for ecolodge owners to promote their ecolodges. …

The Use Of Public Funds For Private Benefit: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Public Stadium Funding And Ticket Prices In The National Football League, Matthew T. Brown, Daniel A. Rascher, Wesley M. Ward

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

During the past decade there has been a proliferation of sports stadia being built in America’s municipal districts. While it used to be common for the public to fully fund stadium construction projects, over the past 20 years factors such as political motives, tax reform, and increased public awareness of tax equity have forced sports teams to share increasing amounts of the financial burden (Crompton, Howard, & Var, 2003). As public funding for stadia construction has decreased, franchises have continued to strive for maximized profits. Concurrently, the cost of attending events in sports stadia has increased for consumers in terms …

Visual Ethnography Of On-Site Sport Sponsorship Activation: Lg Action Sports Championship, Joon-Seo Andrew Choi

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

Sporting events have increasingly become the epicenter of sponsorship or logo showcasing and the concept of sponsorship has changed the way sport marketers view sporting events ever so drastically. The amount of logo exposure at sporting venues determines the fine line between instant elation and intolerable anguish for sport marketers. Do consumers then actually notice the multitiude of logos that the sponsors bombard them with at these sporting events? The purpose of this study is to investigate what an average spectator at a sporting event visually records in a two-hour span. The research question is "Do on-site sponsor programs indeed …

Marketing Scholarship: Evolving Research Standards, Karl Boedecker, Fred W. Morgan Jan 2006

Marketing Scholarship: Evolving Research Standards, Karl Boedecker, Fred W. Morgan

Economics, Law, and International Business

Marketing academics endeavor to conduct research that contributes to the development of cutting edge theories and ideas about marketing. At the same time, they try to incorporate these research findings into their classes through the application of theories to the practice of marketing. Even so, marketing scholarship comes under intermittent attack for being arcane and irrelevant for practitioners. To explore this disconnect between theory and practice, we review the evolution of scholarly research in marketing. We identify the various definitions of scholarship that have evolved as business schools have matured. We conclude that marketing academics must make scholarly contributions, variously …

Pitfalls In Analyzing Systems In Organizations, Steven Alter Jan 2006

Pitfalls In Analyzing Systems In Organizations, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Despite the availability of elaborate methods for defining data and business processes, huge amounts of time and effort are wasted on system projects that produce disappointing results. An important contributing factor is the difficulty business and IT professionals experience when they try to describe, evaluate, and/or analyze systems in organizations even at a cursory level. Between 1997 and 2003, the author's information system courses for evening MBAs and EMBAs required students to write two group papers that present a business-oriented analysis of a real world system in an organization and propose preliminary recommendations for improvements. If these working students are …

Work Systems And It Artifacts: Does The Definition Matter?, Steven Alter Jan 2006

Work Systems And It Artifacts: Does The Definition Matter?, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Lurking just under the surface of longstanding debates about rigor versus relevance and about the core and scope of the IS field is the question of whether inadequate definitions of basic terms is an obstacle to progress. This article focuses on whether the definition of IT artifact or work system really matters. It identifies five definitions of IT artifact and IT-enabled work system, and then looks in detail at whether the definition of work system mattered in Jasperson, Carter, and Zmud’s [2005] article in MIS Quarterly about post-adoptive behaviors. It argues that their definition perhaps affected their conceptualization of post-adoptive …
