Federal Legislation: An Act To Provide for the Settlement of the Water Rights Claims of the Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe in Yavapai County, Arizona, and for Other Purposes, P.L. 103-434, 108 Stat. 4526 (Oct. 31, 1994. Parties: Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe, AZ, Prescott, Chino Valley Irrigation District & US. Title I of the Act is the Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe Water Rights Settlement Act of 1994, which ratifies the Settlement Agreement entered into by the Tribe, AZ, US, Prescott, and the Chino Valley Irrigation District. Who Governs the Public Lands: Washington? The West? The Community? (September 28-30)

Conference organizers and/or session moderators included University of Colorado School of Law professors David H. Getches, Judith Jacobsen, Lawrence J. MacDonnell, Teresa Rice and Charles F. Wilkinson.

Shifting policy objectives and management approaches for the public lands of the West are provoking heated debate about how these decisions should be made and implemented. Are these policy directions a reflection of the "New West" or are they, in fact, a declaration of "war on the West"? Somewhere between these polarities of view, efforts are underway to open dialogue and reach consensus.

Impacts Of Projected Climate Change On Urban Water Use, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation

Water

Urban water use, particularly outdoor use, responds to changes in temperature, precipitation, and other climatic parameters. This study significantly improved the capacity of an existing regional water demand model to estimate the response of both residential and commercial-industrial water demand to changes in climatic parameters. The resulting functional relationships derived from historic time-series climatic and water use data were applied to global climate scenarios for the four Wasatch Front counties of Utah.

New Solutions For The Propagation Of Long Water Waves Over Variable Depth, Yinglong Zhang, Song-Ping Zhu

Based on the linearized long-wave equation, two new analytical solutions are obtained respectively for the propagation of long surface gravity waves around a conical island and over a paraboloidal shoal. Having been intensively studied during the last two decades, these two problems have practical significance and are physically revealing for wave propagation over variable water depth. The newly derived analytical solutions are compared with several previously obtained numerical solutions and the accuracy of those numerical solutions is discussed. The analytical method has the potential to be used to find solutions for wave propagation over more natural bottom topographies.

In this paper, problems associated with mine waste water discharge quality in two mines are examined in the environmentally sensitive regions in NSW, Australia. In the first mine the problem of controlling and treating surface run-off from a large coal mine site is duscussed. Then study involved sampling and analysis of mine wastewater during various weather conditions over a period of six months. The samples were analysed for a range of physical and chemical water quality parameters. The study indicated that during minor storms, the mine wastewater treatment system worked effectively, but during a moderate to major storm, the treatment …

Open Stream Collection And Diversion: An Added Dimension In Providing Water For Grazing Animals, United States Bureau Of Land Management

This technical note describes an effective system for collecting water from open streams and conveying it several miles via pipeline systems to watering troughs in arid locations. Perhaps one of the greatest challenges in managing lands that produce forage for grazing animals is to strike a desirable balance between forage and water. However, on native grazing lands, this is rarely the case due to terrain and uneven distribution of water. The "open stream collection and diversion system" addresses this issue with a specific engineering solution.

Groundwater is Nebraska's most important natural resource. The principal source of groundwater in Nebraska is the High Plains Aquifer System. This system underlies approximately 85 percent of the state and supplies 95 percent of all groundwater used in Nebraska. The majority of groundwater in Nebraska is used by agriculture but domestic and commercial uses are also important. Eighty-two percent of Nebraskans use groundwater as their major source of drinking water, and nearly all of the state's farm homes rely on groundwater for their domestic needs.

Sustainable agriculture is a system of whole-farm resource use balanced with whole-farm productivity. The overall level of productivity achieved is dependent upon the ability to coordinate and manage simultaneously the soil, water, plant, and animal resources within climatic and economic limits. Both the kind and amount of plants and animals supported by the system are important and play significant roles, both individually and collectively in maintaining a healthy farm environment. In the future, integrated systems will help reduce human impact on resources while providing sufficient supplies of high quality food and fiber.
