What is a "Stewardship Forest?"

Forests are more than just trees, they are a vital resource in Nebraska. Forests provide homes for deer, squirrels, birds and a multitude of other animals. Forests clean air, purify water and protect valuable topsoil. Forests provide wind protection and conserve energy. Forests are a place to hike, picnic and camp. Forests grow wood for fuel, posts and lumber to build homes, furniture, toys and tools. Forests provide solace and beauty.

Slick sidewalks and roads are hazardous. Removing compacted snow and ice with shovels or snow blowers is not always an easy task. Deicers can help by "undercutting," or loosening the snow or ice because they lower the freezing point of water.

Do not use deicers to completely melt snow or ice, but to make their removal easier. Deicers melt down through the ice or snow to the hard surface, then spread out underneath. This undercuts and loosens the snow so shoveling and plowing can be done.

History, identification, and indoor and outdoor control of the elm leaf beetle are discussed.

The elm leaf beetle is an imported pest, first found in the United States in 1834. Common throughout Nebraska, it is almost exclusively a pest of elms, including the American, Siberian and other varieties. Japanese Zelkova is also readily attacked. Adults (beetles) vary in color from yellow to olive green, and have a black stripe near the outside of each wing cover. They can be confused with other beetles of similar appearance (western corn rootworm, striped cucumber beetle), but they are distinctive in that they occur …

In south Western Australia, the lack of good quality feed in late summer and autumn is a major constraint to livestock production. This feed gap is usually filled by costly supplementary hand feeding of grain or hay. The ability of some trees and shrubs to provide good quality forage during summer and autumn has generated interest for many years (Corbett, 1951; Everist, 1969; Snook, 1987;Oldham et al., 1991, Lefroy, 1991).
