The Impact Of Low Salinities On James River Oyster Populations 1979-1980, Dexter S. Haven

Reports

During the fall, winter and spring of 1979-1980 there was an extensive and prolonged mortality of the 1979 se•t of oysters in the James River, Virginia. Yearling oysters died at lesser rates, with mortalities starting in mid-winter. Small oysters showed moderate to 100% mortalities at two locations. Market-sized oysters showed the lowest mortality. Deaths were associated with prolonged periods of low salinity.

Wills, Trusts, And Estates, Twenty-Sixth Annual Survey Of Developments In Virginia Law, J. Rodney Johnson

Law Faculty Publications

The Virginia General Assembly continued its increased legislative activity in the area of wills, trusts, and estates during the past year by passing three major acts: Exempt Property and Allowances; Acts Barring Property Rights; and the Virginia Small Estate Act. In addition to these major bills, seven additional acts enacted by the General Assembly and four cases decided by the Supreme Court of Virginia involved issues important to both the general practitioner and the specialist in wills and trusts. This article reviews these legislative and judicial developments, with emphasis on the three most important legislative enactments.

Rum, Romanism, And Virginia Democrats: The Party Leaders And The Campaign Of 1928, James R. Sweeney

History Faculty Publications

The 1928 presidential election posed problems for Virginia Democrats, who were traditionally Protestant and prohibitionist. New Yorker Al Smith's nomination split Virginia's party, allowing Republican Herbert C. Hoover to win by a healthy majority. Led by a Methodist Bishop James Cannon, Jr., Virginians who opposed Smith, a Roman Catholic, cited his link with Tammany Hall and his views on prohibition legislations as justifications to vote against him. State party leaders Harry Byrd, Carter Glass, Louis Joffe, and John Garland Pollard mounted a party loyalty campaign for Smith, but the election's central issue was whether or not a candidate's religion merited …

Virginia Law Affecting Churches - Restated, J. Rodney Johnson Jan 1982

Virginia Law Affecting Churches - Restated, J. Rodney Johnson

Law Faculty Publications

Twenty-five years ago, the late William T. Muse, then Dean of the University of Richmond School of Law, observed that although there was considerable law in Virginia relating to churches this law was widely scattered throughout the statutes and the cases. To remedy this state of affairs, Dean Muse wrote a concise but complete summary of these laws. In the quarter-century that has elapsed since Dean Muse's article was published, Virginia has adopted a new constitution, many church-related statutes have been enacted and a number of church-related cases have been decided, some of which have refined established principles and others …

The James River Public Seed Oyster Area In Virginia (A Review Of 22 Years Of Setting And Population Studies, 1946 To 1967 And Changes Caused By Minchinia Nelsoni (Msx) After 1960), Jay D. Andrews Jan 1982

The James River Public Seed Oyster Area In Virginia (A Review Of 22 Years Of Setting And Population Studies, 1946 To 1967 And Changes Caused By Minchinia Nelsoni (Msx) After 1960), Jay D. Andrews

Reports

The seed-oyster area is located in a low-salinity sector of the James River where seasonal riverflows and resulting salinities vary widely. Low spring salinities, usually below 10 °/oo in April or May, eliminate most predators and diseases. Prior to 1960, spatfalls were regular and moderate in intensity each year. High quality seed oysters 2 to 3 inches in size were produced with 1000 to 2000 thick-shelled oysters per bushel for use by private-ground planterH. Following the advent of M. nelsoni (MSX) in Chesapeake Bay in 1959:, setting declined to about one-tenth previous levels and there were spatfall failures in many …
