Knowledge of computer programming is very beneficial and often required for engineering students. Unfortunately, students frequently experience fear and intimidation regarding introductory programming courses. Second language acquisition (SLA) techniques have shown promise as a means of content delivery in programming courses. Blended learning environments are also becoming increasingly popular in course frameworks. This workshop will discuss the application of second language acquisition in a blended learning environment (SLA-aBLe) and will examine the effectiveness of using SLA techniques to teach introductory programming. The proposed workshop will also share instructor experience(s), provide course materials, and review student outcomes from this two year …

Online Classroom Culture Best Practices, Lisa Martino Aug 2016

Online Classroom Culture Best Practices, Lisa Martino

Publications

Overcome challenges - create an online classroom culture.

In 2013, over five million post-secondary students enrolled in online courses in America (National Center for Education Statistics, 2016). Many universities strive to meet student demands for this online course modality. Challenges for online students continue to exist with (1) social isolation; (2) coursework confusion; and (3) lack of teacher presence (Milheim, 2012). Studies show that by creating an online classroom culture, faculty can overcome these challenges to foster and motivate online student engagement (Ladyshewsky, 2013; Milheim, 2014; Vesely, Bloom, Sherlock, 2007). In this conference presentation, the participants surveyed online classroom culture …

The online module consists of a series of short videos (10-20 minutes), online quizzes with tiered questions, and topic specified discussion board led by student researchers. Students’ demographic data, course-related behaviors such …

Conversations About Diversity: Institutional Barriers For Underrepresented Engineering Students, Leroy Long Iii, Joel Alejandro Mejia Mar 2016

Conversations About Diversity: Institutional Barriers For Underrepresented Engineering Students, Leroy Long Iii, Joel Alejandro Mejia

Publications

The United States is becoming increasingly more diverse. Specifically, demographics are shifting because of growth among historically underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, including African Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans. At the same time, a declining number of skilled workers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields threatens U.S. global competitiveness and national security. Low participation, representation, engagement, and inclusion continue to reduce the intellectual capacity of the U.S. STEM workforce. The aforementioned societal changes require diversity in STEM education and the nation at large. Past research offers additional support for the importance of diversity. For example, racial diversity can …

Public speaking is a course required in many degree programs traditionally taught in a face to face setting. Online and hybrid courses are now offered by many institutions in addition to traditional courses, and they are more likely to include mediated speech assignments. Mediated speaking situations include webinars, videoconferences, video recordings of speeches on DVD or YouTube, and other options that students may well find themselves using in their personal and professional communication. Online and some hybrid courses assign mediated speaking situations for the submission of speeches, not as a genre unto itself. In traditional face to face public speaking …

Students' Perception Of The Flipped Classroom In Graphical Communications, Lulu Sun Jan 2016

Students' Perception Of The Flipped Classroom In Graphical Communications, Lulu Sun

Publications

The flipped classroom requires students to study concepts before the class, apply what they learn in the classroom, and work with other students, which then makes it possible to get immediate feedback from the instructor. However, the student’s perception of the flipped classroom is not widely investigated in the area of engineering graphics. This paper presents a study of the flipped classroom in a Graphical Communications course. Students are required to study course material online before the face-to-face classroom experience. The online course study includes multimedia materials and an online quiz that they are required to take. The results of …

Teaching Innovation And Creativity: Turning Theory Into Practice, Aaron M. Glassman, Rose Opengart Jan 2016

Teaching Innovation And Creativity: Turning Theory Into Practice, Aaron M. Glassman, Rose Opengart

Publications

Innovation and creativity are the lifeblood of organizations. As such, businesses expect college graduates to exhibit the skills necessary to engage in these behaviors. This research explores the concept of innovation, whether it is innate, or if the skill can be taught within the university setting, and how universities are addressing the need for, and teaching innovation. A search of the word “innovation” within educational courses found that most courses are theoretically-oriented or are efforts to cultivate entrepreneurs and/or new inventions, though some appear more practical in nature. A sampling of 50 ACBSP and AACSB accredited universities offering courses in …

Developing A Homeland Security Curriculum: A Case Study In Outcomes-Based Education Using The Delphi Method, Daniel Cutrer

Publications

The field of homeland security is a nascent discipline, and as such does not have a national accreditation body to promulgate a standardized, outcomes-based curriculum for future homeland security professionals seeking university degrees. This qualitative study was designed to identify a set of program-level, learning-based outcomes for an undergraduate degree in homeland security. The research project used a case study methodology to examine and validate the results of earlier studies on homeland security (HS) curriculum development. A consensus-driven, iterative Delphi technique was used to survey a purposive, convenience sample of homeland security experts to ascertain their ideas on what elements …
