The edited volume of documents under review ... brings together materials reflecting a wide spectrum of Jewish communal activities in Germany from just before the advent of the Nazi regime to 1939. A second volume, covering the period 1939-1943, is in preparation. The chronological division of the volumes follows milestones in the organizational evolution of German Jews in the Nazi era. In 1932, in the face of intensifying antisemitism, an attempt was made to overcome factionalism within the German-Jewish community. The resulting umbrella association, which came to be known as the Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden, encompassed the majority, but not …

Barbara Hanawalt presents her audience with an engaging and thoughtful set of interlocking essays that will be of interest to scholars in a variety of disciplines and yet is also accessible to students. Grossman's book is a collection of essays on Lanyer, who was first brought to public attention by A. L. Rowse's problematic identification of her as Shakespeare's "dark lady." Scholarly and popular interest in Lanyer has grown even stronger since Susanne Woods's 1993 edition of her poems for the Brown University Women's Writers Projects, published by Oxford University Press. Grossman's collection brings together a number of the top Renaissance literary1 cultural scholars who work on Lanyer. A number of themes, such as patronage, female community, and depiction of Biblical women, are developed by the different authors and link the essays in …

Roderick Sreven Hall, US-Bürger, der die Brennergegend von einem Schiurlaub im Jahre 1937 gut kannte, schlug dem OSS-Hauptquartier für Italien vor, die Pässe bei Cortina unpassierbar zu machen. Da es nicht möglich war, die wichtige Verbindung über den Brenner lahmzulegen, sollten zumindest die weiterfuhrenden Pässe durch gezielte Ein-Mann-Unternehmen gesprengt werden. Es ist ncht klar, welche Pässe Hall durch gezielte Sprengungen blockieren wollte. Er scheint aber anfangs geplant zu haben, das Kraftwerk Kardaun bzw. dessen Staudamm bei Atswang zu sprengen. The idea performing comedy, and performing a lot of comedy, during one the most systematic reigns of terror the world has ever known may at first blush seem somewhat degraded. The perception of most people, especially in the English-speaking world, is that “German comedy” in the first place is an oxymoron. The fact is, however, that 42,000 productions were staged between 1933 and 1944 in the Third Reich, and the majority of them were comedies. The most frequently performed were plays by the now forgotten likes of August Hinrichs, Maximilian Böttcher, and Fritz Peter Buch, Jochen Huth, and Charlotte Rissmann. …
