Well, you could have bowled me over with a feather, or perhaps a dot com, when I learned today that four bowl games had already been played. Not exactly stellar match- ups, but bowl games nonetheless. And say what you will; a bowl game is still a bowl game.

Over the past several days much has been written about the graduation of Shaquille O'Neal from Louisiana State University. Indeed the event has been the butt of many jokes, one of which Shaq generated himself when he told people he was working on his degree at Learn Slow University. He now says that LSU means Love Shaq University.

It was the late Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen of Illinois who once said, "a billion here, a billion there, pretty soon were talking about real money." This quaint observation came to mind over the past few days in baseball as it was "a few million here, a few million there." One wonders if we are now talking about real money.

One of the primary objectives in sport is to win. In American sport winning is too often the only thing. Coaches spend sixteen to eighteen-hour days in seven-day weeks searching for all those little keys to victory that are necessary to success. Owners too spend time, energy and especially dollars in the great quest for the glory that comes with winning.

This past week Mike Mussina signed with the New York Yankees for $88.5M over six-year period with $12M of that a signing bonus to be spread over the contract at $2M per year. Next year Mussina will make $10M pitching for the Yankees. Considered by many to be one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, Mussina gives the Yankees a formidable starting rotation, and this has already led some to concede next year's World Championship to them. The Minnesota News Council: Principles, Precedent And Moral Authority, Erik Ugland

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This study addresses the Minnesota News Council’s moral authority–that is, its ability to serve as a referent for the ethical or moral choices of others–and how its authority might be affected by perceptions of its legitimacy. After analyzing all of the Council’s 125 written determinations, we argue that the Council’s legitimacy and authority could be enlarged by clearer statements of ethical principles, explicit expressions of standards of conduct, and more consistent references to past determinations.

A role for professional communicators to play in a postmodern context is to work as an experimentalist, designing a system that supports users’ free engagement with the content of the system, inviting people to engage that system, observing the ways in which those engagements proceed, and from those observations, learning how to refine the system to support more fruitful future engagements.The role serves to cultivate an environment in which users’ conversations with one another and their interaction with the system’s content may thrive.This thesis purposes that the experimentalist is a useful and practical role for a communicator in the current …

The Global Diffusion of the Internet Project was initiated in 1997 to study the diffusion and absorption of the Internet to, and within, many diverse countries. This research has resulted in an ongoing series of reports and articles that have developed an analytic framework for evaluating the Internet within countries and applied it to more than 25 countries. Statistical evaluation of the number of Hispanics in the United States in a given year varies. However, all data suggest that the Hispanic population will become the largest ethnic minority in the United States in the new millennium. This research illuminates for health care providers and interpreters cultural factors to consider in the delivery of patient-centered and efficacious care for the ethnic patient, specifically the Latino. The research project answered the question What culture-related factors impact effective communication between Mexican patients and American medical nurses in the Daviess County, Kentucky area? Leadership In Computer-Mediated Communication: Implications And Research Directions, Gerard George, Randall G. Sleeth

Despite the importance of interpersonal influence processes in computer-mediated communication (CMC) environments, the emergence and functioning of leaders in CMC settings remains unstudied. An initial model and propositions address the possible extension of selected leadership models beyond face-to-face (FTF) communications and into the non-face-to-face CMC environment. We (1) model relevant variables for CMC leadership, (2) briefly review the implications of selected leadership models regarding these CMC variables, and (3) extend leadership models into the CMC sphere.

It might have been just one more of the endless stream of National Hockey League games that attract little attention before January. It was a 3-2 final with Federov scoring the winner with 28 seconds left on the clock. This one, however, was special as it marked a milestone for one of the greatest professional coaches of any sport in any time. Scotty Bowman, currently the coach of the Detroit Red Wings, was behind the bench in his 2,000th NHL game on Friday night as Detroit beat Vancouver.
