Continued usage of information systems (or, IS continuance) has proven to be a critical success parameter for ICT implementation at the top of the global economic pyramid. However, there are few studies which have explored continued IS usage at the bottom of the economic pyramid (BOP) though it represents the majority of the world’s population. To fill this knowledge gap, this study develops an mHealth continuance model at the BOP framing the impact of two post adoption expectation beliefs (i.e., perceived service quality and perceived trust). This study extends ECM (expectation confirmation model) perspective synthesizing the extant literature on continued …

Gender equity has been a prominent aspect of equity concerns in public policy. The gender dimension has led to widespread advocacy and focused attention on equity in other than economic areas, such as education, health, decision-making, violence against women and political participation. The human development approach offers a capability-based approach to gender equity in development that is a departure from traditions focused on income and growth. Gender concerns have given the approach the power and flexibility to encompass aspects of inequality that would otherwise go unremarked. Its sensitivity to gender in turn has made it sensitive to a range of …

A Gender Recognition System Using Shunting Inhibitory Convolutional Neural Networks, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Dr Fok Hing Chi Tivive
In this paper, we employ shunting inhibitory convolutional neural networks to develop an automatic gender recognition system. The system comprises two modules: a face detector and a gender classifier. The human faces are first detected and localized in the input image. Each detected face is then passed to the gender classifier to determine whether it is a male or female. Both the face detection and gender classification modules employ the same neural network architecture; however, the two modules are trained separately to extract different features for face detection and gender classification. Tested on two different databases, Web and BioID database, …

A Brain-Inspired Visual Pattern Recognition Architecture And Its Applications, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Dr Fok Hing Chi Tivive
With the ever-increasing utilization of imagery in scientific, industrial, civilian, and military applications, visual pattern recognition has been thriving as a research field and has become an essential enabling technology for many applications. In this chapter, we present a brain-inspired pattern recognition architecture that can easily be adapted to solve various real-world visual pattern recognition tasks. The architecture has the ability to extract visual features from images and classify them within the same network structure; in other words, it integrates the feature extraction stage with the classification stage, and both stages are optimized with respect to one another. The main …

Adaptive Hierarchical Architecture For Visual Recognition, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Son Lam Phung, Khan M. Iftekharuddin
Dr Fok Hing Chi Tivive
We propose a new hierarchical architecture for visual pattern classification. The new architecture consists of a set of fixed, directional filters and a set of adaptive filters arranged in a cascade structure. The fixed filters are used to extract primitive features such as orientations and edges that are present in a wide range of objects, whereas the adaptive filters can be trained to find complex features that are specific to a given object. Both types of filters are based on the biological mechanism of shunting inhibition. The proposed architecture is applied to two problems: pedestrian detection and car detection. Evaluation …

A Car Detection System Based On Hierarchical Visual Features, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Dr Fok Hing Chi Tivive
In this paper, we address the problem of detecting and localizing cars in still images. The proposed car detection system is based on a hierarchical feature detector in which the processing units are shunting inhibitory neurons. To reduce the training time and complexity of the network, the shunting inhibitory neurons in the first layer are implemented as directional nonlinear filters, whereas the neurons in the second layer have trainable parameters. A multi-resolution processing scheme is implemented so as to detect cars of different sizes, and to reduce the number of false positives during the detection stage, an adaptive thresholding strategy …

Demographic features, such as gender, are very important for human recognition and can be used to enhance social and biometric applications. In this paper, we propose to use a class of convolutional neural networks for gender classification. These networks are built upon the concepts of local receptive field processing and weight sharing, which makes them more tolerant to distortions and variations in two dimensional shapes. Tested on two separate data sets, the proposed networks achieve better classification accuracy than the conventional feedforward multilayer perceptron networks. On the Feret benchmark dataset, the proposed convolutional neural networks achieve a classification rate of …

A Human Gait Classification Method Based On Radar Doppler Spectrograms, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Moeness G. Amin
Dr Fok Hing Chi Tivive
An image classification technique, which has recently been introduced for visual pattern recognition, is successfully applied for human gait classification based on radar Doppler signatures depicted in the time-frequency domain. The proposed method has three processing stages. The first two stages are designed to extract Doppler features that can effectively characterize humanmotion based on the nature of arm swings, and the third stage performs classification. Three types of arm motion are considered: free-arm swings, one-arm confined swings, and no-arm swings. The last two arm motions can be indicative of a human carrying objects or a person in stressed situations. The …
Towards Greater Systemisation In Ci Research: An Exploration Of Social Development As A Framework For Comparison And Understanding, William Tibben
Towards Greater Systemisation In Ci Research: An Exploration Of Social Development As A Framework For Comparison And Understanding, William Tibben
Dr William Tibben
The theme of complexity alludes to the difficulties community informatics (CI) researchers face when analysing use of ICTs by communities. In response, de Moor (2009a, 2009b) and Stillman (2010) identify the need for greater systemisation of CI research that enables complex socio-technical processes to be analysed over multiple cases. The principle by which such systemisation should occur is open to debate. It seems improbable that a single theoretical approach, at least in the short term, is going to satisfy everyone as greater systemisation is pursued. The paper suggests that, as a first step, efforts should be devoted to better appreciation …
What Does The Future Hold For Biometric Technology? A Study Into Changing User Perceptions, Amanda Toshack, William Tibben
What Does The Future Hold For Biometric Technology? A Study Into Changing User Perceptions, Amanda Toshack, William Tibben
Dr William Tibben
Biometric technologies have been developed for authentication and verification of individuals. However, expectations of substantial growth in biometric technologies have not been realised. User-acceptance of biometric technologies represents a significant stumbling block to growth. While it is understood that there are different user concerns creating barriers for the industry, the prioritisation of these concerns and how they have changed over time is unclear. This research investigates the changes in attitudes in both the general user and professional user categories that have occurred over the period 1998-2002. Data was generated from both survey and focus group discussion.

Community Technology Centres In Regional New South Wales: A Knowledge Based Analysis Of Ict Enabled Development, W. J. Tibben
Dr William Tibben
Community Technology Centres (CTCs) represent a popular approach in addressing disparities that arise from the digital divide. This research uses a major government CTC program in the Australian state of New South Wales, called the NSW CTC Program, to address questions that relate to the effectiveness of CTCs in addressing social needs and in the generation of sufficient income to support their ongoing operations. The desire by program planners for CTCs to become fully-fledged businesses by the time government funding had ceased in June 2005 provides an opportunity to analyse an underlying philosophy that relied on community autonomy and private …

Symbolic Modelling Of Dynamic Human Motions, David A. Stirling, Amir S. Hesami, Christian H. Ritz, Kevin Adistambha, Fazel Naghdy
Dr David Stirling
Numerous psychological studies have shown that humans develop various stylistic patterns of motion behaviour, or dynamic signatures, which can be in general, or in some cases uniquely, associated with an individual. In a broad sense, such motion features provide a basis for non-verbal communication, or body language, and in more specific circumstances they combine to form a Dynamic Finger Print (DFP) of an individual, such as their gait, or walking pattern. A new modelling and classification approach for spatiotemporal human motions is proposed, and in particular the walking gait. The movements are obtained through a full body inertial motion capture …

Perception Of Human Gestures Through Observing Body Movements, Amir S. Hesami, Fazel Naghdy, David A. Stirling, Harold C. Hill
Dr David Stirling
A new approach to modelling and classification of human gait is proposed. Body movements are obtained using a sensor suit that records inertial signals that are subsequently modelled on a humanoid frame with 23 degrees of freedom (DOF). Measured signals include position, velocity, acceleration, orientation, angular velocity and angular acceleration. Using a range of concurrent features extracted from the sensor signals, a system using induced symbolic classification models, such as decision trees or rule sets, has been used for classification of identity. It is anticipated that this approach will also enable the identification of a variety of gestures. The feasibility …

Optimal Error Of Query Sets Under The Differentially-Private Matrix Mechanism, Chao Li, Gerome Miklau
Gerome Miklau
A common goal of privacy research is to release synthetic data that satisfies a formal privacy guarantee and can be used by an analyst in place of the original data. To achieve reasonable accuracy, a synthetic data set must be tuned to support a specified set of queries accurately, sacrificing fidelity for other queries.
This work considers methods for producing synthetic data under differential privacy and investigates what makes a set of queries "easy" or "hard" to answer. We consider answering sets of linear counting queries using the matrix mechanism, a recent differentially-private mechanism that can reduce error by adding …

The Role Of Motivation In The L2 Acquisition Of English By Saudi Students : A Dynamic Perspective, Ali Alzayid
The Role Of Motivation In The L2 Acquisition Of English By Saudi Students : A Dynamic Perspective, Ali Alzayid
Ali Alzayid
Since the work of Gardener and his associates in the 1950s, the role of motivation in learning a second language has continued to interest researchers. Previous studies on L2 motivation, were largely based on product oriented models of motivation, which tends to view motivation as a static phenomenon. Recently, however, there has been a shift in emphasis from a study of L2 motivation as a product to its study as a process. The methodological framework of this study was based on Dörnyei and Otto's (1998) Process Model of L2 Motivation. This model proposed that the construct of motivation is not …

Emotional States Control For On-Line Game Avatars, Ce Zhan, Wanqing Li, Farzad Safaei, Philip Ogunbona
Associate Professor Wanqing Li
Although detailed animation has already been achieved in a number of Multi-player On-line Games (MOGs), players have to use text commands to control emotional states of avatars. Some systems have been proposed to implement a real-time automatic system facial expression recognition of players. Such systems can then be used to control avatars emotional states by driving the MOG's "animation engine" instead of text commands. Some of the challenges of such systems is the ability to detect and recognize facial components from low spatial resolution face images. In this paper a system based on an improved face detection method of Viola …

A Real-Time Facial Expression Recognition System For Online Games, Ce Zhan, Wanqing Li, Philip Ogunbona, Farzad Safaei
Associate Professor Wanqing Li
Multiplayer online games (MOGs) have become increasingly popular because of the opportunity they provide for collaboration, communication, and interaction. However, compared with ordinary human communication, MOG still has several limitations, especially in communication using facial expressions. Although detailed facial animation has already been achieved in a number of MOGs, players have to use text commands to control the expressions of avatars. In this paper, we propose an automatic expression recognition system that can be integrated into an MOG to control the facial expressions of avatars. To meet the specific requirements of such a system, a number of algorithms are studied, …
