This article describes my efforts in organizing the "National Center for Biotechnology (NCBI) Field Guide" workshop in March 2006 and four NCBI mini-courses in April 2007 at Iowa State University. It also includes an overview of academic libraries that are providing bioinformatics support and summarizes library involvement in hosting NCBI courses. A discussion of how hosting the NCBI courses has influenced my collection development, instruction, and liaison activities and suggestions to librarians about how to get involved with bioinformatics is also included.

Purpose: Our library staff has been partnering with faculty to develop curricula using simulation equipment for various outreach programs to youth in the state. The simulation center is housed and managed by our library. This presentation will recount the development and expansion of this two-year old program and describe its various components. The programs are aimed at grades 5-12 to stimulate interest in science and health care professions through engagement and participation in a variety of interactive educational sessions using simulation equipment, such as eye exams, neurological/cognitive assessments, and cardiac rhythm evaluation. This poster will examine the importance of networking public libraries with community hospitals for quality consumer health programming. The University of Iowa partnered with five communities in Iowa to provide a training program on patient safety for consumers. The project, Empowering Public Health / Patient Safety Outreach through Community was funded through a subcontract with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region. Presenters will describe the planning process, collaborative partnerships, and challenges encountered.

Increasing pressures on universities and educational institutions to be more involved in the communities that house them have led to a wave of interactions that have been both creative and mutually supportive. These ‘town-gown’ relations have stemmed not only from pressures by government leaders, but also from the sense of civic responsibility and the drive for ‘service learning’ where students move beyond the academic walls to engage in real life situations as part of the learning process. The chapter provides some background on research into how libraries have experimented with using Facebook for outreach and how the user community has responded.
