Cross sections for inclusive electron scattering from aluminum have been measured at both forward and backward angles in the kinematic region near x =1 and 1.75 & Q & 7 (GeV/c) . The forward-angle data are in good agreement with a recent calculation. Both the data and the calculation show scaling behavior for F2(g, Q~)=vs(g, Q2) at high Q for fixed values of the Nachtmann variable g. The ratio R =oL /trr has been extracted for 1.75 &Q &5 (GeV/c) and is found to decrease with Q2 to a value consistent with zero at the highest Q~.

Climatology Of Surface-Based Inversions In The North American Arctic, Raymond S. Bradley, Frank T. Keimig Oct 1992

Climatology Of Surface-Based Inversions In The North American Arctic, Raymond S. Bradley, Frank T. Keimig

Raymond S Bradley

The annual cycle of surface-based inversions at nine Arctic weather stations is examined, based on a 20-year set of daily 1200 UT significant level radiosonde data. All stations are at or near the coast. Inversions in winter months are primarily the result of strongly negative net radiation at the surface, whereas in summer, inversionsmore commonly result from near-surface cooling of warm air muses. Inversion frequency is at a maximum inwinter (generally >70% of days) when inversions range from -400 to -850 m in thickness. Inversion thickness and strength (temperature change across the inversion) are strongly related to surface temperature. Inversions …

The Investment Decision Of The Post-Keynesian Firm: A Suggested Microfoundation For Minsky's Investment Instability Thesis, James Crotty, Jonathan P. Goldstein Sep 1992

The Investment Decision Of The Post-Keynesian Firm: A Suggested Microfoundation For Minsky's Investment Instability Thesis, James Crotty, Jonathan P. Goldstein

James Crotty

In this paper, Crotty and Goldstein undertake the formulation of a model of enterprise investment decision that can provide a microeconomic foundation for the Keynes-Minsky macromodels developed by Delli Gatti & Gallegati, Jarsulic, Semmler and others. The authors address the difficulties inherent in the formulation of an investmes theory in which the future is unknowable, and investment substantially irreversible. Where Minsky accepts a variation of the Tobin-q theory-in which owners and managers are assumed to be identical economic agents-Crotty and Goldstein look to Keynes' insistence on their qualitative difference. Financial commitments to creditors are certain, while expected profits are not. …

Measurement Of The Electric And Magnetic Form Factors Of The Proton From Q2 1.75 To 8.83 (Gev/C)2, P E. Bosted, L Clogher, A Lung, R G. Arnold, R S. Hicks, R A. Miskimen, Gerald Alvin Peterson Jun 1992

Measurement Of The Electric And Magnetic Form Factors Of The Proton From Q2 1.75 To 8.83 (Gev/C)2, P E. Bosted, L Clogher, A Lung, R G. Arnold, R S. Hicks, R A. Miskimen, Gerald Alvin Peterson

Gerald Alvin Peterson

The proton elastic electric and magnetic form factors, GEM and G’bfP(Q2), have been separately measured in the range Q” =1.75 to 8.83 (GeV/c)2, more than doubling the Q3 range of previous data. Scaled by the dipole fit, Go(Q2), the results for Gnlp(Q2)//+G~(Q2) d ecrease smoothly from 1.05 to 0.91, while G~p(Q~)lcdQ~) is consistent with unity. Comparisons are made to QCD Sum L-eRule, diquark, constituent quark, and VMD models, none of whic,h agree with all of the new data. The ratio Q2F2/Fl approaches a constant value for Q2 > 3 ( GeV/c)2. --p;. .- -- 2

Glossary For Chemists Of Terms Used In Biotechnology, B. Nagel, H. Dellweg, Lila Gierasch Jan 1992

Glossary For Chemists Of Terms Used In Biotechnology, B. Nagel, H. Dellweg, Lila Gierasch

Lila Gierasch

The glossary contains definitions and explanatory notes, if needed, of over 230 terms frequently used in publications in the multidisciplinary field of biotechnology. The glossary was developed as a step to help facilitate communication between chemists, chemical engineers, biologists and bioengineers and to make biotechnology and its methodologies more accessible to the chemical profession. The interrelation between chemistry, chemical engineering and the burgeoning areas of molecular biology will be especially important as chemical industrial processes begin to incorporate recombinant DNA techniques, for example. The range of terms includes microbiology, genetic engineering, biochemistry, molecular biology, biochemical engineering, bioprocessing and general concepts …

Professional And Personal Perspectives On Long Term Research In Serbia [Yugoslavia], Joel Halpern, Barbara Kerewsky-Halpern Jan 1992

Professional And Personal Perspectives On Long Term Research In Serbia [Yugoslavia], Joel Halpern, Barbara Kerewsky-Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

On the leveI of personal relationships, there is, perhaps, no need to pose the question that is the title of this paper. The long and ongoing research experience has been tremendously enriching for the investigators and our now adult children, who first arrived in the viIlage as toddlers and infant. From what our vilIage friends convey, satisfactions with this enduring relationship have been a two-way process. But beyond personal affect, what is the intellectual value of long-term study of a single community?

Over thirty years ago the opportunity to document European village Life, in this case a village in Serbia, …

The Impact Of Profitability, Financial Fragility And Competitive Regime Shifts On Investment Demand: Empirical Evidence, James Crotty, Jonathan P. Goldstein Jan 1992

The Impact Of Profitability, Financial Fragility And Competitive Regime Shifts On Investment Demand: Empirical Evidence, James Crotty, Jonathan P. Goldstein

James Crotty

Crotty and Goldstein have developed a hybrid post-Keynesian/ neo-Schumpeterian theory of investment demand. In this micro-founded theory of accumulation, the optimal investment decision depends on the level of expected profitability, the degree of competition, and the degree of financial fragility. Its core assumptions are: i)the future is unknowable in principle, ii) physical capital is ii) illiquid and the accumulation process is substantially irreversible, iii) managers and owners are distinct economic agents with an unresolved principal-agent conflict, and iv) management seeks the long-term growth and financial stability of the firm itself, and guards its decision-making authority against encroachment by stockholders and …

Towards A Vision For The Future: The Need For Growth Management Strategies, John Mullin Jan 1992

Towards A Vision For The Future: The Need For Growth Management Strategies, John Mullin

John R. Mullin

A look at Pennsylvania from a national perspective indeed illustrates that it is the Keystone State. Parts of it are eastern and tied into megalopolis. Indeed, the Lehigh Valley is now part of the Regional Plan of New York. Parts of it are upper-south in character, parts are thrust into the Midwest, and parts are now in the economic sphere of Baltimore and Washington. (I think the fact that most surprised me while I researched this paper was that Gettysburg will be less than thirty minutes away from the new Washington Metro connection in Frederick). What all this points to …

The Reconstruction Of Lisbon Following The Earthquake Of 1755: A Study In Despotic Planning, John R. Mullin Jan 1992

The Reconstruction Of Lisbon Following The Earthquake Of 1755: A Study In Despotic Planning, John R. Mullin

John R. Mullin

This paper is a description and analysis of the plan for the rebuilding of Lisbon following the earthquake of 1755. This tremor was so devastating that the entire city centre, the Baixa, ceased to exist. From this chaos emerged the Marques de Pombal who, with the approval of the King, immediately brought order and began to develop efforts to create the new Lisbon. The effort first focused upon the development of four options that included rebuilding the city as it was, reconstructing the city with minimal improvements to the street pattern, undertaking a total rebuilding effort or starting fresh on …

Development Of The Assabet Mills In 19th Century Maynard, John R. Mullin Jan 1992

Development Of The Assabet Mills In 19th Century Maynard, John R. Mullin

John R. Mullin

Historians who focus on the development of nineteenth century New England textile mills generally place them in either of two categories. The first, referred to as the Rhode Island system, tended to be small, water-power dependent, family-owned, and located in villages and towns. The mills located in communities along the Quinebaug River in Massachusetts and Connecticut and the Blackstone River in Massachusetts and Rhode Island exemplify this system. The second category is most often called the Waltham or Lowell system. Large-scale, steam-powered, corporately-owned and located in larger cities, these mills could be found in Waltham, Lowell, Lawrence, Chicopee, and Holyoke, …

When The Mall Comes To A Small Town: How To Shape Development With Carrots And Sticks, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval Jan 1992

When The Mall Comes To A Small Town: How To Shape Development With Carrots And Sticks, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval

John R. Mullin

Across the United States there is a continuous expansion of population away from our traditional urban center cities. As people have occupied housing in these former open spaces, industrial parks and commercial centers have soon followed. While local planning boards have been able, in most cases, to handle residential and industrial growth, they are rarely able to handle extensive retail growth. Indeed, when a mall developer - complete with a multitalented staff and reams of plans - comes before a small town planning board, there is inevitable shock and a great deal of fear. In our experience, few small towns …

Free Ca2+ Gradient In Growing Pollen Tubes Of Lilium, David Gross, P. K. Hepler, D. A. Callaham, D. D. Miller Jan 1992

Free Ca2+ Gradient In Growing Pollen Tubes Of Lilium, David Gross, P. K. Hepler, D. A. Callaham, D. D. Miller

David Gross

Fluorescence ratiometric imaging of Lilium pollen tubes loaded with the Ca2+ indicator Fura-2 dextran has revealed a distinct elevation of free intracellular calcium ion concentration ([Ca2+]i) at the extreme tip of actively growing Lilium pollen tubes that declines to a uniform basal level of 170 nM throughout the length of the tube. The calcium gradient occurs within the first 10–20 μm proximal to the tip. Experimental inhibition of tip growth, usually achieved through the injection of the Ca2+ buffer 5,5′-dibromo BAPTA, results in the loss of the [Ca2+]i gradient. Occasionally these inhibited cells reinitiate growth, and when they do so …

Women's Participation In Local Union Leadership: The Massachusetts Experience, Dale Melcher, Jennifer L. Eichstedt, Shelley Eriksen, Dan Clawson Jan 1992

Women's Participation In Local Union Leadership: The Massachusetts Experience, Dale Melcher, Jennifer L. Eichstedt, Shelley Eriksen, Dan Clawson

Dan Clawson

A 1989 survey of leaders of a sample of Massachusetts AFL- CIO-affiliated union locals indicates that although women are represented in these union locals' leadership in numbers nearly proportional to the female percentage of membership, they are under-represented in the most influential positions. Women are over-represented as secretaries and seriously under-represented as presidents; they chair many committees, but rarely the key grievance or negotiations committees. Minority women appear to be even more under-represented in leadership positions than are white women. Both male and female union leaders said they would like to see more women in leadership, but most of the …

Linking The Past To The Future: A Landscape Conservation Strategy For Waterford, Virginia, Elizabeth Brabec, Mary Ann Nabor, Harry L. Dodson Jan 1992

Linking The Past To The Future: A Landscape Conservation Strategy For Waterford, Virginia, Elizabeth Brabec, Mary Ann Nabor, Harry L. Dodson

Elizabeth Brabec

The report presents a planning strategy for protecting Waterford, an historic community located in Loudoun County, Virginia. The Waterford Historic District, including the village and surrounding farmland, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. In 1986, the National Park Service determined that Waterford was threatened by proposed new construction on an historic farm almost directly in the center of the Landmark. The report identifies alternative development strategies that would protect the historic integrity of the village landscape. These strategies were intended to be used in negotiations with local landowners, as negotiated but voluntary land conservation strategies.
