Sacred Heart University announces the appointment of Jonas Zdanys to the position of poet-in-residence. To date, Zdanys has published 44 books of both his own poetry as well as translations of Lithuanian literature into English; another two books of original verse are scheduled for release in 2016.

Professor James Castonguay, chair of SHU’s Department of Communication and Media Studies, has been named director of the University’s new School of Communication and Media Arts (SCMA) to be housed within the College of Arts and Sciences and located in the Frank and Marisa Martire Business & Communications Center. Castonguay has also served as director of SHU’s graduate programs in communication and was the founding chair of the Department of Media Studies and Digital Culture in 2003.

A collaborative team of faculty and students from across Sacred Heart University is developing a new recruiting and information tool aimed at introducing prospective and new students and their families to the University using media that today’s students are comfortable with—gaming technology. The project team, led by Robert McCloud, associate professor of computer sciences and information technology, includes several other faculty members with complementary skills such as 3D animation and digital motion, music composition and script writing.

Barbara Pierce, associate professor of biology at Sacred Heart University, has received a grant award of $111,253 from the National Science Foundation in support of her research project on migratory birds. Her area of specialization is physiological ecology, and her research project is titled “Collaborative Proposal: Fat Metabolism and Oxidative Stress in Exercising Migratory Birds.” The NSF grant extends through August 31, 2017.
