The Center for Adventist Research (CAR), an Andrews University and General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist organization, seeks to promote an understanding and appreciation of the heritage and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA). It combines the resources of the James White Library’s Adventist Heritage Center and the Ellen G. White Estate Branch Office to provide the most extensive collection of Adventist-related resources in the world, both physically and digitally. An introduction to the background, collections, and activities of CAR is presented. Of particular interest are the digitization projects.

Information Literacy "Dispositions" Come To Seminary [Poster], Terry Dwain Robertson
Terry Dwain Robertson
The most recent iteration of the ACRL Standards for Information Literacy has added “dispositions” to the repertoire of information literacy practice. This poster will explore how these “dispositions” might be understood in Adventist Theological Education. The first iteration of ACRL Standards for Information Literacy was largely instrumental and most instruction was focused on using technology. This development shifts the focus from learning an ICT skill to transformative learning. Information seeking has been transformed from a scarcity model to an abundance model. Adventists are now flooded with information from all sides and from all types of sources. The SDA pastor and …

A bibliography of theses and dissertations completed by students at Seventh-day Adventist institutions of Higher Education through 2012. The bibliography is a work in progress, and is not complete. Challenges continue with the representation of non-Roman fonts and diacritics, so authors and titles with these issues may not be listed at this time. It is the goal to include all works in the bibliography.

The St. Clair Family Story In America: John Sinkler (C1630-1700) To Fairy St. Clair Gibson, Lawrence W. Onsager
Lawrence W. Onsager
This book traces the St. Clair family from Scotland to the New Hampshire frontier in 1650. John Sinkler was sold by his English captors during the English Civil War as an indentured servant. The first five generations of the St. Clair family in America was spent in New Hampshire. James Sinclair/St. Clair (1757-1836) fought with Whitcomb's Rangers and the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. After the Revolutionary War, this branch of the family moved to New York State, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas , Oklahoma, and finally to the states of Washington and Oregon. Fairy St. Clair Gibson's family joined the …

Cemeteries have been called outdoor museums, cultural artifacts, and written and visual records of communities. I am attempting to produce a geographically local biographical or cultural landscape study. In some cases cemeteries are the only identifiable remains of a community. The Plymouth Cemetery records that I have enhanced are just a part of the rich history of the Suldal Norwegian American Community in Juneau County, Wisconsin. It was estimated in 1908 that there were about 1,200 Norwegians from Suldal and about 500 from Upper Telemark in the settlement. Suldal is a rural district in Rogaland County in western Norway. Originally, …

Attitudes Toward Muslim Lebanese Women In Religious Resurgence: A Study Of 284 University Students, Lori Maria Walton
Attitudes Toward Muslim Lebanese Women In Religious Resurgence: A Study Of 284 University Students, Lori Maria Walton
Lori Maria Walton
The politicization of religion in the last few decades has created a climate ripe for religious resurgence in all areas of the world. The decreased role of religion among societies and effective secularization and modernization of the West have directly influence opposing factors of “religious resurgence”, “religious fundamentalism”, and “religious revivalism” as a sense of cultural preservation and balancing new social, economic, emotional and interllectural side effects of modernization growth (Sahliyeh, 1990). The effects of religious resurgence on Muslim Lebanese women’s efforts to enhance their freedom, equity, and civil rights need to be explored thoroughly to provide an adequate analysis …

A Festschrift style publication would provide a venue for SDA Librarians to publish research and develop a body of professional literature that addresses the needs of SDA libraries and librarians. It is proposed because it does not involve specific time dead- lines and allows for short-term commitments for editorial leadership. It is also an accepted method of acknowledging and recognizing esteemed colleagues.

An Examination Of Parent -Child Relationships And Teen Substance Use, Brianna Johnson, Duane C. Mcbride, Gary Hopkins, Sara Pepper
Duane McBride
Past studies have indicated strong family bonds may act to buffer against adolescent substance abuse. However, this relationship is not clear, particularly when multiple substances and family dysfunction are examined. In this study, the relationship between alcohol use, marijuana use, and tobacco use and parental relationships were examined in 570 elementary and high school students. Results indicated that support in parent–child relationships was found to be inversely correlated with teen substance use. Clinical implications are discussed in light of these results.
Why Go To The Library? Pedagogical Reflections [Poster], Terry Dwain Robertson
Why Go To The Library? Pedagogical Reflections [Poster], Terry Dwain Robertson
Terry Dwain Robertson
Why should Seminary students “go to the library”? Because of the ubiquity of online resources, it is increasingly possible to complete the degrees without setting foot in the building that is full of books. This is so even though many classes require readings or research papers that anticipate the use of the library. Surprisingly, some assessment feedback from students suggests that this mode of independent text based activity is not necessarily appreciated as time well spent. One proposal for responding to this trend reflects on the question of “time.” Time is a constraint of the human condition. We lack the …

Big-Shouldered Shakespeare: Three Shrews At Chicago Shakespeare Theater, L Monique Pittman
Big-Shouldered Shakespeare: Three Shrews At Chicago Shakespeare Theater, L Monique Pittman
L. Monique Pittman
This performance criticism project enlists theorist Michel de Certeau’s concepts of institutional strategy and individual tactic to examine social resistance in three productions of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew (1593/94) staged by the Midwestern Shakespearean repertory company, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. The three productions date from CST’s new millennium rise to prominence on the Navy Pier skyline and instantiate the ways in which the theater reconciles its self-promotional image of Shakespeare the Great Humanist with the misogynist content of Taming. Since 1999, CST has staged two full-scale productions of Taming, one led by David H. Bell (2003) and …

This qualitative study identified the learning needs of students in the multicultural classroom. The study utilized a semi-structured interview guide and data were gathered through focus group interviews of six ethnic groups, namely: Asian, Black, Filipino, Filipino-American, Hispanic, and White. Each group was comprised of eight to twelve members purposefully sampled from the student population of one multicultural university in the Philippines for the collegiate year 2012-2013. The themes that emerged from the Qualitative Data Analysis of interview transcripts showed that learning needs in the multicultural classroom are culturally responsive teaching, teacher immediacy behaviors, differentiated instruction, and teacher language competence …

A Two-Minute Paper And Pencil Test Of Symbolic And Nonsymbolic Numerical Magnitude Processing Explains Variability In Primary School Children’S Arithmetic Competence, Nadia Nosworthy, Stephanie Bugden, Lisa Archibald, Barrie Evans, Daniel Ansari
Nadia Nosworthy
Recently, there has been a growing emphasis on basic number processing competencies (such as the ability to judge which of two numbers is larger) and their role in predicting individual differences in school-relevant math achievement. Children’s ability to compare both symbolic (e.g. Arabic numerals) and nonsymbolic (e.g. dot arrays) magnitudes has been found to correlate with their math achievement. The available evidence, however, has focused on computerized paradigms, which may not always be suitable for universal, quick application in the classroom. Furthermore, it is currently unclear whether both symbolic and nonsymbolic magnitude comparison are related to children’s performance on tests …

Celebrating Milestones: James White Library's 75th Anniversary [Poster], Terry Dwain Robertson, Lauren Matacio, Cynthia Helms
Terry Dwain Robertson
James White Library celebrated its 75th anniversary with a series of activities in the year 2012-2013, starting with the alumni homecoming in 2012 and projecting its capstone event during the alumni homecoming in 2013. The activities focused on how the library, first as a small brick building in 1937 filled with print resources, progressed to its current building with its technological emphasis. Landmarks through the years include the naming of the building in 1937, the construction of a new facility in 1962, the addition in 1976, the replacement of the card catalog with an online catalog in 1992, and the …

The Contributions Of Vocabulary And Letter Writing Automaticity To Word Reading And Spelling For Kindergartners, Young-Suk Kim, Stephanie Al Otaiba, Cynthia Puranik, Jessica Sidler Folsom, Luana L. Greulich
Luana Greulich
In the present study we examined the relation between alphabet knowledge fluency (letter names and sounds) and letter writing automaticity, and unique relations of letter writing automaticity and semantic knowledge (i.e., vocabulary) to word reading and spelling over and above code-related skills such as phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge. These questions were addressed using data from 242 English-speaking kindergartners and employing structural equation modeling. Results showed letter writing automaticity was moderately related to and a separate construct from alphabet knowledge fluency, and marginally (p = .06) related to spelling after accounting for phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge fluency, and vocabulary. Furthermore, …

Exploring The Amount And Type Of Writing Instruction During Language Arts Instruction In Kindergarten Classrooms., Cynthia S. Puranik, Stephanie Al Otiba, Jessica Folsom Sidler, Luana L. Greulich
Luana Greulich
The objective of this exploratory investigation was to examine the nature of writing instruction in kindergarten classrooms and to describe student writing outcomes at the end of the school year. Participants for this study included 21 teachers and 238 kindergarten children from nine schools. Classroom teachers were videotaped once each in the fall and winter during the 90 min instructional block for reading and language arts to examine time allocation and the types of writing instructional practices taking place in the kindergarten classrooms. Classroom observation of writing was divided into student-practice variables (activities in which students were observed practicing writing …
