In Defense Of Marine And Coastal Resources, Matthew Wilburn King

Matthew Wilburn King PhD

The presentation covered a case study of the Gulf of Fonseca, a complex region shared by Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador. It includes 261 km of coastal land, including mangroves, lagoons, and estuaries, and it is home to more than seventy species of migratory birds and more than twenty-two species of mammals and reptiles. It comprises twenty-two percent of the mangrove coast along the Central Pacific coast of Central America, and it has been directly linked to ninety percent of the fish production in the region. The Gulf serves to stabilize soils, protect the coast, and trap nutrients.

Gujarat Elections 2002: Vote Shares Across Regions, Srijit Mishra May 2003

Gujarat Elections 2002: Vote Shares Across Regions, Srijit Mishra

Srijit Mishra

This paper attempts to analyse in each constituency vote shares accruing to the two major parties in the state with the use of triplot or ternary diagram method. A triplot enables a two-dimensional display of three categories of shares or proportions, in this case vote shares, accruing to the BJP, Congress and ‘others’. Triplot diagrams provide a thematic representation of the fact that an increase in vote shares of BJP and to a lesser extent the Congress does have a relationship with the decline of ‘other’ contestants.

Evolution Of Credit Union Philosophy, Matthew Wilburn King Jan 2003

Evolution Of Credit Union Philosophy, Matthew Wilburn King

Matthew Wilburn King PhD

This paper explores the history and evolution of credit union philosophy. The evolution of credit union philosophy spans nearly 150 years. It’s a story that begins in the middle of 19th century Europe as it was emerging from a long history of feudal relations and tyrannical rule that created “the miserable economic conditions of the period and the realization that people would have to take action themselves if their lives were to improve.”1 The democratic ideals that were so eloquently articulated by classical liberal philosophers such as John Locke and Thomas Hobbes began to be increasingly institutionalized during this time.

Criterios De Calidad En La Investigación Social: La Producción De Datos Sociales, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Philip Shapira

Learning from Science and Technology Policy Evaluation, edited by Philip Shapira and Stefan Kuhlmann, presents US and European experiences and insights on the evaluation of policies and programs to foster research, innovation, and technology (RIT). In recent years, policymakers have promoted RIT policies to accelerate scientific and technological development in emerging fields, encourage new patterns of research collaboration and commercialization and enhance national and regional economic competitiveness. Innovation Und Intellektuelles Eigentum: Wer Nutzt Und Wem Nützen Softwarepatente?, Michael Friedewald, Knut Blind, Jakob Edler

Michael Friedewald

The Impact Of Information And Communication Technologies On The Electricity Consumption In Germany, Clemens Cremer, Barbara Schlomann, Michael Friedewald Jan 2003

The Impact Of Information And Communication Technologies On The Electricity Consumption In Germany, Clemens Cremer, Barbara Schlomann, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

The importance of information and communication technologies in everyday life is increasing strongly. The growing penetration of PCs in households and offices and the almost ubiquitous use of mobile communication devices are vivid examples for this development.

The key drivers influencing the penetration, usage patterns and specific energy consumption of IC-equipment were examined and a bottom-up analysis of the direct energy consumption of ICT-equipment in households and offices was made for 2001 resulting an energy demand of 38 TWh. In addition, projections for the years 2005 and 2010 were developed based on the base year consumption and the key driving …

Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann Jan 2003

Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

How can we reach “new” levels of knowledge if “new” means that there is something “evolved” that cannot be generated simply by deduction or by induction from what has been given before. The paper’s first goal is to show that two paradigmatic attempts at solving this so-called “learning paradox,” Plato’s apriorism and Aristotle’s inductivism, form two horns of a dilemma: While the inductivist cannot justify any representation of data without assuming a priori given hypotheses, the apriorist cannot justify why a certain application of given ideas is correct without being caught in an infinite regress. The second goal is to …

Scottish Devolution: Identity And Impact And The Case Of Community Care For The Elderly, Gordon Marnoch Jan 2003

Scottish Devolution: Identity And Impact And The Case Of Community Care For The Elderly, Gordon Marnoch

Gordon Marnoch

This article examines the emergent identity and impact of devolution in Scotland. Using the case of community care for the elderly, a model is set out for capturing the different interpretive perspectives evident in relation to a particular policy area in 1999–2001. The political story of the ‘free personal care’ issue, in which the Scottish Executive were unexpectedly forced into adopting a markedly different policy from the rest of the UK, is examined in some detail. Setting the episode in a broader context, four discursive thematics are identified in relation to the policy case. A model is demonstrated for examining …
