Use Best Practices To Promote Your Library, Adeen Postar

Best Practices is a term dating back to the 1980s that was popularized by business writers, most notably Tom Peters and Robert Waterman in their bestseller In Search of Excellence: Lessons From America's Best Run Companies (1982). Essentially, this term implies success; that certain actions, attitudes, and programs are the most efficient and effective way of doing business and that the same measures can be used with successful outcomes in all similar organizations. But are there really best practices that can help enhance public relations for every type of law library? I believe that there are.

In a system with multiple service points, how can leadership work together to keep the library as a whole relevant and central to students? James Madison University Libraries created the Joint Library Services Leadership Team, which works outside traditional departmental silos to provide coherent, consistent, and collaborative services regardless of location.
Three major service points of James Madison University Libraries, the two main library circulation/reference departments and the media resources center, have historically been both physically and philosophically separate from each other. Although the departments shared common goals of providing excellent student learning-focused services, they did not systematically work together …

Best Practices For Data Sharing And Deposit For Librarian Authors, Regina Fisher Raboin, T. Scott Plutchak, Lisa A. Palmer, Julie Goldman

Sharing data is now encouraged by major funding agencies, and many journals require it as a prerequisite for publication. While many of the hard science journals have implemented ‘Data Deposit Requirements’ and ‘Policies’, in the Library Science literature, publishers are beginning to move titles into open access journals, but data deposit requirements are just beginning to be addressed. Librarian authors will increasingly find themselves having to comply with data sharing policies. In this webinar, we look at examples from the Journal of the Medical Library Association and the Journal of eScience Librarianship and discuss best practices in data deposit.

Tips for approaching each of the eight steps are also included.
Learning From Teaching: A Dialogue Of Risk And Reflection, Anne Jumonville Graf
Learning From Teaching: A Dialogue Of Risk And Reflection, Anne Jumonville Graf
Anne Jumonville Graf
Librarians have not always included discussions of reflective practice as part of our formal, published literature. In fact, in 2005 John Doherty claimed that librarians are not particularly reflective practitioners in general. However, since then there have been reviews of the status of reflection practice across librarianship, calls for more critical reflective practice, examples of that practice, and a variety of models, examples, and frameworks for reflective strategies in library instruction. In this chapter, my focus is on ways that critical reflection can enhance our ability to learn through teaching, especially when our teaching practice involves valuing the voices and …
Growing Pains-From Standard Bibliography To Dynamic Web-Accessible Resource, Creating A Repository Of Popular And Scientific Writing On Roses Using Tei., Julia R. Tryon
Julia R Tryon
Twenty years ago, I started a project that I envisioned would culminate in a printed bibliography of writings on the Rose in English that would be as complete as possible—both books and articles. A bibliography on roses had been published in 1973 which focused on books and in 1984 there was a self-published title from the U.K. citing books and“significant” journal articles but which did not include the voluminous amount of articles in popular journals and newspapers. My goal was to update and expand upon what had been compiled by the earlier bibliographers. Two decades later, I have returned to …

Controlled Vocabulary Standards For Anthropological Datasets, Celia Emmelhainz
Controlled Vocabulary Standards For Anthropological Datasets, Celia Emmelhainz
Celia Emmelhainz
This article seeks to outline the use of controlled vocabulary standards for qualitative datasets in cultural anthropology, which are increasingly held in researcher-accessible government repositories and online digital libraries. As a humanistic science that can address almost any aspect of life with meaning to humans, cultural anthropology has proven difficult for librarians and archivists to effectively organize. Yet as anthropology moves onto the web, the challenge of organizing and curating information within the field only grows. In considering the subject classification of digital information in anthropology, I ask how we might best use controlled vocabularies for indexing digital anthropological data. …
