In 2018, the University of the Pacific Libraries worked with a faculty member in the School of Engineering and Computer Science to upload a class project involving multi-file records to the institutional repository. One of the file types was an .EXE executable Virtual Reality (VR) application. Pearl Weiler Von Allmen was employed at the University of Louisville School of Law Library from 1940 to 1947 and from 1950 to her untimely death in 1974, going from a library assistant to a tenured full professor and president of the regional law library association. The purpose of this presentation is to share our techniques for creating easy to use tutorials for your library. Whether you serve a small academic community, or a large university, we hope to present ideas that work for your library. We will cover the basic pedagogy behind tutorial creation and use, and then present both licensed and open sourced tools for creating multimedia tutorials at all funding levels. Participants will be asked to participate in storyboarding exercise where they put together a learning object they can take back to their institution. The intersection of mobile and photographic technologies with social networks has produced platforms such as Instagram. The way libraries are using these platforms has not been investigated in depth. This research aims to discover trends in the use of Instagram by libraries, reporting on selected libraries’ experiences and intentions behind capturing and sharing images on Instagram. Recommendations will be made on how librarians can transform relationships and engagement with their communities through mobile photo sharing, taking advantage of ‘the perfect storm’ of technological convergence.

E-books promise users convenience and accessibility, but library e-book platforms contain so many barriers to use and access that patrons often turn away in frustration. In addition, aggregators’ e-book platforms often include intrusive, onerous digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. The traditional solution of DRM-free e-books are generally only available only in large and expensive publisher packages. One approach to solving these problems is an evidence-based selection of e-books program; it not only offers access to hundreds of DRM-free, unlimited simultaneous-user e-books that are integrated with similar e-journal content, but also includes an agreement that libraries will only purchase titles with …

Over the past year, the University of Rhode Island (URI) has taken some steps towards shifting the default to Open Access for both faculty scholarship and student work. First and foremost, in March 2013, the URI Faculty Senate passed a Harvard-style Open Access mandate. And in February 2013, the Library and the Graduate School began making electronic dissertations and theses openly available through URI’s institutional repository. In this presentation, we will define Open Access policies and discuss why they are important. We will give an overview of our experiences with Open Access advocacy, implementation of policies, and next steps.

Using digital resources for teaching primary source analysis can enrich pedagogy whether you are a subject specialist or a librarian by suggesting new ideas for lessons and/or supplementing those you created previously to expand their reach. Digitized holdings from national-level institutions give students the opportunity to compare and contrast local holdings with major repositories. Guides created by archivists and librarians enrich undergraduate or graduate student learning by providing different professional skill sets and vocabularies. Blogs provide the opportunity to share public scholarship while social media expands the audience for collections and scholarship even further.

This poster describes an outreach exhibit program utilizing a media wall digital signage system in the 24/7 study space at The Center for Science and Social Science Information, Yale University. The mission of the exhibit program is to showcase,using media wall technology, the work of Yale faculty, research, academic units, and outreach programs. The Center is a newly renovated collaborative library, a merge of the Kline Science Library, the Social Science Library, and the StatLab campus computing facility that opened in January 2012.

This presentation describes how the library and the Graduate School at the University of Kentucky collaborated to streamline the thesis and dissertation submission process. The outcome was that the Graduate School implemented an electronic thesis and dissertation mandate in Fall 2013 and students now submit their theses or dissertations directly to the institutional repository, which enables immediate free online access to their research.

This study bridges a gap between public library and emergency management policy versus practice by examining the role of public libraries in the community resource network for disaster recovery. Specifically, this study identifies the opportunities and challenges for public libraries to fulfill their role as a FEMA designated essential community organization and enhance community resilience.
