Barbara H. Kwasnik

This paper reports on a portion of a larger ongoing project. We address the issues of information organization and retrieval in large, active commercial websites. More specifically, we address the use of classification for providing access to the contents of such sites. We approach this analysis by describing the functionality and structure of the classification scheme of one such representative, large, active, commercial websites: eBay.com, a web-based auction site for millions of users and items. We compare eBay’s classification scheme with the Art & Architecture thesaurus, which is a tool for describing and providing access to material culture.

Other Duties As Assigned: Emerging Trends In The Academic Library Job Market, Penny Beile, Megan Adams

Penny Beile

Nine hundred job announcements published in four journals in 1996 were examined using content analysis to compare requirements and benefits among various positions in academic libraries. This study updates the article "The Academic Library Job Market: A Content Analysis Comparing Public and Technical Services," in which authors David W. Reser and Anita P. Schuneman analyzed 1,133 job advertisements published in 1988 to compare public and technical services positions.  A growing number of electronic-related advertisements in the past decade has led to the addition of a third division to be investigated, namely the systems and automation librarian. For purposes of comparison …

Mental Health Parity: National And State Perspectives 2000: A Report To The Florida Legislature, Bruce Lubotsky Levin, Ardis Hanson, Richard Coe, Sara A. Kuppin

Ardis Hanson

By failing to appropriately treat adults and children with severe mental illness, we incur enormous social costs through payments for disability benefits (Medicaid, SSI, SSDI), increased medical expenses, accidents and suicides, avoidable criminal justice proceedings, lost productivity, and increased need for homeless shelters and services. People who are underinsured are forced by arbitrary caps and limits to increasingly rely on the public sector. By providing parity for mental health, Florida will bring mental health into the mainstream of health care and become a leader in dispelling the prejudice that surrounds treatment of persons with severe mental illness.

Informing The Nation Jacksonian Style: The Ideological Impetus For, And Impediments To, The U.S. Government’S Informing Function During The Antebellum Period, John Walters

John Walters

This article examines the development of the U.S. government's informing function during the antebellum period. Particular attention is paid to the ideology of Jacksonian democracy, as expressed through such prominent organs as the Democratic Review and through such representative thinkers as Jeremy Bentham, George Bancroft, and William Leggett. Examined are the ways in which the ideology of democracy not only shaped and contributed to, but also impeded the development of, the informing function of government.

The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Represantation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik Jan 2000

The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Represantation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik

Barbara H. Kwasnik

The link between classification and knowledge is explored. Classification schemes have properties that enable the representation of entities and relationships in structures that reflect knowledge of the domain being classified. The strengths and limitations of four classificatory approaches are described in terms of their ability to reflect, discover, and create new knowledge. These approaches are hierarchies, trees, paradigms, and faceted analysis. Examples are provided of the way in which knowledge and the classification process affect each other.

Tolkien's Cauldron: Northern Literature And The Lord Of The Rings, Gloriana St. Clair Dec 1999

Tolkien's Cauldron: Northern Literature And The Lord Of The Rings, Gloriana St. Clair

Gloriana St. Clair

Tolkien's Cauldron studies the sources of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien was a scholar of Old Norse literature and much of his work in the Lord of the Rings is informed by his knowledge of old Norse mythology, Eddic poetry, and saga. Tolkien's use of these sources enriched this complex story of Middle-earth.
