Terry Reese taught two pre-conference workshops on MarcEdit at the NASIG 32nd Annual Conference: a full day session titled “A Beginner’s Guide to MarcEdit” and a half day session titled “Beyond the Editor: Advanced Tools and Techniques for Working with Metadata.” Attendees were given slides and sample files so that they could follow along or work through the exercises later at their own speed. The first day covered everything from installation and settings, to how to work with vendor records, and direct integration with library systems. The second day covered using OpenRefine and the features related to linked data.

The Digital Preservation Task Force will share updates about the task force’s work, and discuss recent developments in the field of Digital Preservation. The main focus of the session will be a discussion between the panelists with plenty of opportunity for those in attendance to ask questions and offer feedback.

Currently, the Task Force has made several documents available via the NASIG website for reference by librarians, publishers, third party preservation agencies, and other interested parties. Inspired by discussions at the 2017 Library Publishing Forum, An Ethical Framework for Library Publishing 1.0 was created by the members of the Ethical Framework for Library Publishing Task Force, with the assistance of many community members who served as peer reviewers and workshop participants, as well as the staff of the Educopia Institute. The Framework introduces library publishers to important ethical considerations in a variety of areas and provides concrete recommendations and resources for ethical scholarly publishing. The goal of the SHARE initiative, a partnership between the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Center for Open Science (COS), is to build a “free, open, data set about research and scholarly activities across their life cycle.” As of August 2017, 161 repositories and publishers have made metadata available to SHARE for harvesting, and the aggregated data set is available for searching. In recent years, many libraries have forayed into the world of open access (OA) publishing. While it marks a major shift in the mission of libraries to move from providing access to content to generating and creating content ourselves, it still involves the same basic values regarding access to information. The environment has changed, and libraries are adapting with new approaches and new staff skills to promote these fundamental values. This article describes two serialists who use skills honed in their respective serials departments to show how those skills adapt to the world of e-publishing. The presenters discussed their roles in e-publishing and their respective university presses and library publishing programs. How have their libraries reorganized to provide resources for supporting these new roles? The daily work of an e-publishing librarian was reviewed, including an overview of working with Digital Commons and Open Journal Systems, two e-press platforms. The presenters also discussed funding and sustainability of the programs, and working with open access and subscription titles.

The University of Iowa Libraries has converted a few print texts to databases, working with an in-house programmer and web developer. These are resource intensive projects, so we do few of them and only for items that are institutionally important. In each case, we are re-envisioning the print text to see how it can be most effectively used online and as such are not merely hosting a previously published PDF but creating a new way to interact with the material. We host a variety of faculty produced scholarship, including videos and image collections, as well as more traditional textual materials. Items in a digital collections are frequently not static, instead being updated in some way. When this information comes from a content provider mixed with new materials, the updates need to be separated from the new content. It also needs to be clear what content specifically was updated. Is it a new image or did a single image become compound images? Was metadata added or removed and were these changes in a field that we have also modified? Locally digitized collections have been around long enough that they may need to move to new interfaces and be reshaped for today's technology. In addition, many collections were originally built outside the library and must migrate into a more controlled environment; migration needs to be carefully thought through so that nothing is lost in the process.
