Libraries are increasingly called upon to provide evidence of their contributions to, or impact on, student learning. Whiteboards, which fill many learning spaces, furnish evidence via student-generated visualizations. Librarians at Oregon State University undertook an exploratory, termlong, photo-ethnographic study to determine the types of visualization activities in which students engage to help them learn. Results show differences in visualization activities across discipline groups and suggest the need to design study spaces to accommodate those needs. This study serves as a model for those seeking to identify and convey ways in which learning spaces support and contribute to student learning.

Strategic credibility within the university is a vital form of currency in determining institution-wide resources prioritization, collaboration opportunities between organizational units, and overall direction of departments. This poster presents the results of an analysis of the strategic credibility of circulation and reference departments in academic libraries in the Northwest. Outcomes of this research include a potential methodology for library departments to assess their strategic credibility and suggestions on how to communicate this value to others.

Academic librarianship has an intimate association with narratives and stories in their traditional role in curating, caring for, and making collections accessible. Librarians also experience the intricacies and challenges of narrative inquiry through the qualitative research they undertake, oral histories they gather, reflective teaching practices they facilitate, and oral-traditions they interact with. Despite these intersections with reflection and narrative, academic librarianship, (and library sciences as a whole), have not fully incorporated their own narrative(s) within their professional practice(s). Objective – This study aimed to identify assessment opportunities and stakeholder connections in an emerging technologies department. Such departments are often overlooked by traditional assessment measures because they do not appear to provide direct support for student learning. Methods – The study consisted of a content analysis of departmental records and of weekly activity journals which were completed by staff in the Emerging Technologies and Services department in a U.S. academic library. The findings were supported by interviews with team members to provide richer data. An evidence based framework was used to identify stakeholder interactions where impactful evidence might be …

How end-users and stakeholders value a digital collection is one of the most compelling questions in library assessment.This presentation reports on a series of interviews with stakeholders and potential end-users of the digital collection “Western Writers Series Digital Editions.” These interviews were undertaken to determine in what ways these digital humanities materials might be used by scholars and incorporated into their research process. Digital and information literacies instruction is truly a daunting and multi-faceted undertaking. Many librarians have begun to scale back what can effectively be accomplished in a one-shot bibliographic session due to time constraints. Instead, some instructors have started to focus more deeply on teaching toward just a few information literacy skills (such as Evaluation) that can be accomplished in the limited timeframe available. This is definitely a sensible approach. This inquiry subjectively examines selected basic communication textbooks for information literacy concepts from the communication discipline point of view. Librarians can build on these concepts in library skills instruction sessions for first-year communication students. This analysis reveals that communication textbook authors are addressing information literacy concepts and standards with content, exercises, examples, and, most importantly, context; and the authors are often utilizing their own discipline-specific terminology to do so. This paper will examine how LIS schools prepare pre-service librarians to communicate with school principal/administrators the importance and implementation of Information & Communication-Technology (ICT) standards. A recent state-wide study has shown that many school principals/ administrators derive their understanding as to the role of school libraries/ librarians from three main sources: personal experience (84.7%), on-the-job experience (81.3%), and informal communication with school librarians (80.7%).1 Obviously, school librarian interaction with principals/administrators has large impact on an administrator’s viewpoint on school libraries’/librarians’ educational efficacy. Boise State publishes the Western Writers Series which consists of 50-60 page booklets of authoritative introductions to writers and classic texts that relate to literature of the American West. Zines, loosely defined as self-published magazines, provide a cultural insight to the time in which they are published, making them a genre that libraries may want to consider collecting. Due to their ephemeral nature, however, they create collecting, cataloging, and preserving challenges to libraries.
