In 2011 the University of Iowa Libraries began crowdsourcing the digital transcription of its manuscript archives. Four years and over 50,000 transcribed pages later, that project, known as DIY History, has garnered considerable internet attention via Buzzfeed, Twitter, Tumblr, and the NBC News blog. At the same time, it has been threaded into undergraduate classrooms at Iowa as a means of introducing students to primary source research, information literacy, and multimodal design.

The University of Iowa Libraries was awarded a $73,300 grant to digitize a collection of paper records of Chautauqua performances in the United States. The collection, housed in the Department of Special Collections, is a vast assortment of records from the Redpath Lyceum Bureau, which was a major booking agent for "circuit" Chautauqua performances in the Midwest. The focus of the digitization project, called "Traveling Culture: Circuit Chautauqua in the Twentieth Century," is a set of talent flyers contained within this vast collection. This presentation covered how we approached planning for this project, our workplan, and advice for those who …

That's My Bailiwick: A Library-Sponsored Faculty Research Web Server, Paul A. Soderdahl, Carol Ann Hughes

Paul A Soderdahl

The University of Iowa Libraries provide a unique, new, scholarly publishing outlet for their faculty and graduate students. With the prevalence of personal faculty home pages and course Web sites in just about every department on campus, it's not very hard for faculty to find a Web server somewhere for storing an HTML file. And, with some work, faculty can often find some "techie" to help convert a document to HTML or to save a list of links. What is rare, however, is a space on the Web where faculty from all disciplines can find a home for their scholarly …

Creating Academic Web Space For Faculty: Research And Teaching Initiatives At The University Of Iowa Libraries, Carol Ann Hughes, Paul A. Soderdahl, Karen Zimmerman

Paul A Soderdahl

The University of Iowa has several projects that are reshaping options for teaching staff and librarians as they work to build new types of academic resources. Two of these are Bailiwick and TWIST. Bailiwick is a web space where academic passions are realised in HTML and creative home pages. Bailliwick is home to Web sites that are experimental in form, like Border crossings, which provides comprehensive and in-depth resources, or that take on a narrow, highly specialised topic like French Feminists. In the Teaching with Innovative Style and Technology Project (TWIST), teaching staff are paired with librarians partners to create …

Implementing The Sfx Link Server At The University Of Iowa, Paul A. Soderdahl

Paul A Soderdahl

In January 2002, the University of Iowa Libraries introduced its link server—linking related content from one information provider to another—using Ex Libris SFX software. Three basic services appeared on day 1 of the link server’s implementation: (1) citation reference linking to full-text electronic journal articles; (2) linking to holdings in the local catalog; and (3) persistent linking to an electronic reference service. The system is now integrated with more than seventy-five licensed databases and includes links to more than 16,000 full-text journal subscriptions. New developments beyond citation reference linking include links to Journal Citation Reports, Ulrichsweb, and interlibrary loan. This …

The Iowa Flood Of 2008: Putting The Disaster Response Plan To The Test, Paul A. Soderdahl

Paul A Soderdahl

In the summer of 2008, the rivers in eastern Iowa rose to historic levels, prompting a major evacuation and shutdown of the University of Iowa campus and resulting in nearly $750 million in damage, particularly to the buildings that housed the fine and performing arts. The art library reopened in late 2011, and the music library will be in temporary quarters for several more years. Though the main library received only minor flooding in the basement, the building was closed for several weeks even while campus reopened and classes resumed. The library's data center, located in the main library, needed …

Mentoring: It's A Good Thing: What We Learned Partying With Student Librarians, Nicole Saylor, Jen Wolfe, Paul A. Soderdahl

Paul A Soderdahl

Party hosting is an exercise in preparation and personal finesse. The ambiance and menu must be exciting, the guests lively and engaging. As host, you must set the tone and connect newcomers with those already at the party. No matter how charming or prepared you think you are, once the party starts anything can happen. Uninvited guests can come crashing, Uncle Gene can go heavy on the Riesling and start telling inappropriate jokes, and timid, tired Tina can suck the air right out of the room. But when conditions are right, and host and guests find their flow, the experience …

Managing A Cluster Of Single-Purpose Web Servers: Administrative And Technical Issues, Paul A. Soderdahl Feb 2012

Managing A Cluster Of Single-Purpose Web Servers: Administrative And Technical Issues, Paul A. Soderdahl

Paul A Soderdahl

While the preferred model for a web server at many institutions is to install, maintain, and support a single server for the entire organization, the University of Iowa Libraries uses an alternate model providing a number of different web servers across a number of different platforms in support of the Libraries' web project. This hybrid solution offers several advantages over a single-server solution. Such an implementation allows more content providers to deliver information in its existing format, and also allows the Libraries to offer new services quickly as more desktop applications integrate a web server component. Employing this type of …

Paul A Soderdahl

Since 1992, the Information Arcade at the University of Iowa Libraries has been working with faculty to develop and support learning and creative research through advanced new media technologies. With its broad mission of integrating new technologies into teaching, learning, and research, the Information Arcade employs three guiding principles: (1) collaboration, by drawing on the talents of librarians, technology professionals, faculty, and students; (2) risk-taking, through creative utilization of technologically advanced tools; and (3) implementation, by employing aggressive efforts to make electronic resources easily accessible throughout the University of Iowa campus. This session will focus on some of the specific …

The Core Competency Program At The University Of Iowa Libraries, Paul A Soderdahl, Donna L Hirst

Paul A Soderdahl

At the University of Iowa Libraries the development and implementation of an information technology (IT) Core Competency Program took place over five years. There was no single individual or department who managed this entire effort, so the program evolved slowly and the focus shifted from time to time. The development of the Core Competency List is discussed, and the framework for technology training in the libraries is highlighted. Core competencies are used for training and staff evaluation.

Library Classroom Renovated As An Active Learning Classroom, Paul A. Soderdahl

Paul A Soderdahl

Several books and articles about learning space design have recently been published, giving much needed attention to new types of informal learning spaces such as the library commons. This article describes the redesign of a formal learning space: the general assignment classroom. In 2010, one of the University of Iowa’s Main Library classrooms was converted to an “active learning” space. The library location was selected as home for this prototype TILE classroom – Transform, Interact, Learn, Engage. The university’s goal is to create similar spaces in a variety of sizes and configurations across campus. The classroom is technologically rich, but …

That's My Bailiwick, Paul A. Soderdahl, Carol Ann Hughes

Paul A Soderdahl

The University of Iowa Libraries’ Information Arcade has embarked on a new electronic publishing project. Bailiwick is a space where academic passions can be realized in digital media as highly specialized Web sites. Bailiwick web sites are experimental in nature, provide comprehensive scholarly resources, support an unique electronic tool, or explore a narrow, highly specialized topic. The success of each Bailiwick depends upon the trust that site creators have in the facilities and staff of the Information Arcade. A unique service model is employed that provides consultation with liaisons who have academic backgrounds as well as design and technical expertise.

Creating Partnerships In Support Of Students’ Scholarship: The Electronic Thesis And Dissertation Project At The University Of Iowa, Janice Simmons-Welburn, Paul A. Soderdahl, William Welburn

Paul A Soderdahl

Theses and dissertations are the required evidence of scholarship or creative activity for graduate students. Realizing that much of what graduate students accomplish cannot be captured in a traditional print thesis or dissertation, the University of Iowa has joined many universities across the United States that are seeking ways of enabling students to use new media in their scholarship. Electronic Theses and Dissertations—or ETDs—hold great promise in providing students with options on how their work might be presented, archived and preserved, and made accessible to a much larger community of readers. The University of Iowa Libraries and Graduate College have …

Link resolvers, including Ex Libris’ SFX, use OpenURL to provide library patrons with context-sensitive links, such as the ability to move quickly from a citation in an abstracting and indexing database to the full text. In SFX, information for determining the appropriate links is maintained in the knowledge base, which contains details about a library’s electronic holdings and other information about electronic information resources. This article describes SFX functionality, what the service looks like from a patron’s point of view, and how it can be of particular assistance to a serials librarian.

Brave New Opac, Or Rube Goldberg Meets Aleph, Paul A. Soderdahl, Ed Holtum Jun 2001

Brave New Opac, Or Rube Goldberg Meets Aleph, Paul A. Soderdahl, Ed Holtum

Paul A Soderdahl

The OPAC Working Group at the University of Iowa has taken a "blank slate" approach to the development of its "InfoHawk" OPAC. By starting with an "ideal" interface rather than merely fine tuning the Aleph "out-of-the-box" version, the group has developed a product that it feels is better tailored to its users. This presentation includes a demonstration of the OPAC, a discussion of the rationale for the interface, a look at some inventive ways the group overcame the barriers and limitations encountered during the implementation, and an account of the technical factors that had to be taken into consideration.
