Undergraduate STEM students are increasingly expected to have some data use skills upon graduation, whether they pursue post-graduate education or move into industry. This project was an initial foray into the application of data information literacy competencies to training undergraduate students to identify markers of data and information quality. The data consumer training appeared within two courses to help students evaluate data objects, including databases and datasets available on the Internet. The application of the Data Credibility Checklist provides a foundation for developing data reuse competencies. Linking publications to published datasets in repositories is an important part of the research lifecycle. However, merely linking them does not ensure reusability. It is important for repositories to develop and provide policies for preservation that support the reusability, including lifecycle, ownership, versioning, and attribution aspects of the scholarly process (Bechhofer et al., 2013). As STEM areas increasingly rely on pre-existing data, either to validate or extend the scientific body of knowledge, students who have baseline knowledge of how to find, evaluate, and access data will have an advantage. Accordingly, undergraduate STEM curricula is increasingly focused on research-based group projects that develop professional skills, building the professional portfolio needed for early career scientists, technologists, and engineers. Data narratives or data stories have emerged as a new form of the scholarly communication focused on data. In this paper, we explore the potential value of data narratives and the requirements for data stories to enhance scholarly communication. We examine three types of data stories that form a continuum from the less to the more structured: the DataONE data stories, the Data Curation Profiles, and the Data Descriptors from the journal Scientific Data. In 2013, the Purdue Libraries partnered with the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP), a collaboration between Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), to incorporate the publication of research data sets into the technical report publication process. This project extended an existing process, developed in partnership between the Purdue Libraries, Purdue University Press, and JTRP, which leveraged Purdue's institutional repository to replace artisanal production processes with a more professional approach (Zilinski, Scherer, Bullock, Horton, & Matthews, forthcoming; Newton, Bullock, Watkinson, Bracke, & Horton, 2012). Many funders around the world have begun to recognize the importance of providing free access to research results, which includes publications and data. There has also been an increased interest in the management, dissemination, and access of research data, leading to an increase in the development of research data repositories and the linkage of data to publications. One example is Dryad, a curated general-purpose repository that makes the data underlying scientific publications discoverable, freely reusable, and citable. As more researchers look to publish and cite research data, it will be important to link the published data sets to the corresponding articles and technical reports. This lightening talk will discuss the developing collaborations between the Purdue University Libraries, including the Purdue University Press, and the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP), a collaboration between Purdue University and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Data Management Planning and Resources covers NIH Data Sharing Plans (DSPs), data management plans (DMPs), describes the areas that are typically included in DSPs and DMPs, and identifies tools and resources to help support a data sharing consultation with disciplinary faculty. Participants will be informed of the NIH data sharing policy and general requirements in order to describe them to a faculty member, be able to identify the qualities that comprise effective data sharing plans, and identify resources and tools that can be useful in data management.

e-Science is a methodology of scientific research that developed from the convergence of digital technologies and communication. The ubiquitous computer and ease of access to the Internet has allowed for near instantaneous and global distribution of large data sets. This technology, paired with interdisciplinary collaboration, has brought about the need to organize and effectively promote the “tools, knowledge and skills to effectively participate in networked science” and provide tools for effective data curation.

Many grants, including grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) require recipients to utilize data management plans; some grants, like those given by NSF, require recipients to place their data in searchable data repositories. It is difficult to find one data repository that meets every researcher's needs. To solve this problem, we utilized Purdue's Data Curation Profile Toolkit to interview researchers at our university and assist in developing data profiles/plans. These profiles provided the Digital Asset Management (DAM) project team with valuable information about the researchers' data needs.
