In fall 2013, librarians at Syracuse University and Cornell University surveyed STEM faculty to learn about their experiences with, and perceptions of, open access publishing and the author fees that may accompany that model. The results showed little experience with open access author fees but strong opinions about the open access model. This poster will highlight the cautious optimism found in the results along with suggestions for librarians to further faculty understanding of and participation in open access publishing.

Faculty Perceptions Of Open Access Author Fees: A Case Study At Two Universities, Anne E. Rauh

In the fall of 2013, librarians at Cornell University and Syracuse University surveyed STEM faculty about open access author fees. While few authors had decided against publishing in an open access journal due to the author fee requirement, results showed skepticism towards the quality of open access titles, opposition to paying fees from their own funds, and a lack of understanding of how university resources such as library subscriptions are funded. The speaker will take the participants through the case study results and discuss opportunities for librarians and publishers to collaborate on increasing awareness and participation in open access.

Anne Rauh, Syracuse University, and Jeremy Cusker, Cornell University, surveyed STEM Faculty at their respective universities about perceptions of OA author fees in October 2013. Reponses suggested that faculty were concerned about predatory publishing and unwilling to accept any costs for publishing. This talk will briefly cover the survey results, conclusions drawn from it, and suggestions for librarians communicating about OA moving forward.

Zotero can format citations in many different styles and lets users insert citations within word processing software. If you have ever had to seek technical information, you have probably run into an information access roadblock or a pay-wall. This is a major issue for our students as they leave our universities and our subscription resources and move on to become practitioners of their field. This session will outline the different types of freely available technical information - including patents, government funded technical reports, and open access journal literature - and demonstrate how to access them. STEM Librarians at Syracuse University actively participate throughout the scientific publication process. This chapter will outline points in the process where librarian involvement is applicable and beneficial. Librarians Anne Rauh and Linda Galloway will explain how and why it is important to teach tools that organize scientific literature to faculty and students before they begin the writing process. The use of assessment techniques to help inform targeted publication venues will be described. Post-publication, this chapter will describe how to help authors gauge the impact of their work, promote their publications and increase their visibility.

Quantifying scholarly output via traditional citation metrics is the time-honored method to gauge academic success. However, as the tentacles of social media spread into professional personas, scholars are interacting more frequently and more meaningfully with these tools. Measuring the influence and impact of scholarly engagement with online tools and networks is gaining importance in academia today. Assessing the impact of a scholar’s work can be measured by evaluating several factors including the number of peer-reviewed publications, citations to these publications and the influence of the publications. Xerxes is an interface application, used by over 40 institutions around the world (see http://code.google.com/p/xerxes-portal/wiki/Implementations) including several UW System Libraries. For these UW System Libraries, Xerxes serves as the user interface to MetaLib and also provides sophisticated citation management functionality and integration options. It's developed by libraries for libraries, and therefore designed to be completely customizable. One of the more challenges aspects of the Xerxes implementation is determining logical subject headings. The experiences of UW-Eau Claire, UW Colleges, and UW-Madison will be discussed.

How can librarians engage with graduate student education and research? Often, graduate student orientations of academic departments include only introductory information about the library and are discipline-focused. To address a need for better library support for graduate students increasingly pursuing interdisciplinary research and study, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries initiated a series of workshops designed to integrate into the workflow of graduate students. Are your faculty members overwhelmed with information in this digital age? Are they tired of receiving incomprehensible bibliographies from students? This poster will explore the variety of citation management software supported by the UW-Madison Libraries and demonstrate how this software can improve both faculty and student research. The poster provides overviews of EndNote, EndNote Web, RefWorks and Zotero combined with an assessment tool for instructors. The assessment tool is designed to guide instructors through the process of determining which software best meets her/his needs and those of students in the context of the course assignments.
