Does ebrary work with screen readers? Can Wiley ebooks be downloaded? What ebook publishers allow printing? This poster offers a comparative evaluation of 16 major academic ebook platforms using criteria key to accessibility such as: text-to-speech options, text enlargement, full text searching, print capability and more. Results can be used to support and inform the decisions of acquisition departments and librarians when choosing what ebook packages to buy or promote to users. The average annual cost to students for textbooks is $1,754, and a recent survey found that 49% of students were likely or very likely to not buy a required textbook because of the cost. When cost is an obstacle, learning is hampered. To combat soaring costs, we launched an Affordable Learning Solutions campaign, engaging faculty in finding textbook alternatives that lower costs and improve learning. This session will explore how we recruited faculty and walk attendees through one class that uses low-cost materials and open educational resources available online.

The rising price of tuition and books is pricing some students out of the market for college. While struggles for affordable tuition take place in state legislatures, universities are taking the movement for affordable classroom materials into their own hands. Seven out of ten students forgo required textbooks due to cost (Redden, 2011). This creates inequality in the classroom as economic privilege determines access to necessary learning materials. To counteract this trend, the California State University system began the Affordable Learning Solutions initiative, designed to encourage faculty to adopt low-cost classroom materials. Navigating The Hybrid World: Going From Paper-Based To Paper-Less Library Research Assignments, Ann Agee, Crystal Goldman

This presentation discussed a research module designed for lower division Communication Studies students at San Jose State University, which began as a self-guided paper-based assignment meant to introduce library research concepts. During the 2011-2012 academic year, it transitioned to an online module embedded in the course management system Desire2Learn. The move to a paperless format allowed for the introduction of interactive technologies, such as Screencast-O-Matic, SpicyNodes, Xtranormal, LibGuides, and YouTube videos, which helped to engage students’ interest and enhance learning. This presentation will provide best practices and pitfalls for librarians looking to embed information literacy into the hybrid classroom.

Clicking With Your Audience: Evaluating The Use Of Personal Response Systems In Library Instruction, Emily K. Chan, Lorrie A. Knight

University of the Pacific librarians used personal response systems (PRS) or clickers in first- year mandatory library instructional sessions to assess their effects on student engagement and retention of learning outcomes. Students who utilized clickers during their library sessions reported greater enjoyment and encouragement to participate (n=291). Students in the sessions not utilizing the clickers achieved better learning outcomes than their counterparts who utilized clickers (n=326). The implications of these results are discussed, specifically within the context of pedagogy and tailoring instruction to the Millennial generation.

While young adults (teenagers) are routinely recognized as constituting nearly 25 percent of the nation's public library users, the vast majority of libraries devote more space and design attention to restrooms than to young people. Worse, there are currently no consistent or established metrics, no evaluation criteria, few conceptual standards of best practices, and little consistency in the methods by which we collect empirical evidence about young adult (YA) spaces. This study is the first systematic attempt to both collect and analyze empirical data on libraries' recent trend toward providing greater spatial equity for YA library service.

On January 17, 2009, after years of planning, fundraising, and construction delays, the Oakland Public Library (OPL) finally overcame all obstacles and opened its much-anticipated, newly remodeled TeenZone Department. Planning began in 2001 with the vision that OPL TeenZone would accommodate, educate, and celebrate the city's youth; eight years later this teen space is fulfilling that mission.

The purpose of this paper is to present a virtual library plan created by library directors of the 23 California State University (CSU) system campuses. The information literacy portion of the project offers a repository of high quality interactive digital learning objects (DLOs) in the MERLOT repository. Therefore, DLOs created locally at the Dr Martin Luther King, Jr Library at San José State University (SJSU) focus on topics that supplement the “core” DLO collection.

While library institutions and youth services professionals debate the fine points of volunteerism, young people’s volunteer participation has been carving out an increasingly justified claim for recognition and research.1 Recent studies on volunteering in the United States demonstrate that between one-third to one-half of young people between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five participate in volunteer activities. And as one journalist recently observed, “Volunteering in record numbers, young people became the super-force of the Obama campaign.”2 This participation rate is outstripping that of previous generations.3 A reported 15.5 million teenagers contributed over 1.3 billion service hours in the United States …

Information literacy is the ability of individuals "to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (American Library Association, 1989, para. 3). At San Jose State University (SJSU), information literacy has been traditionally taught through one-shot, 50-minute lectures delivered by university librarians to students enrolled in a select few undergraduate courses. This method of instruction has proven to be neither sustainable nor effective. Skaters, taggers, gang members, and other groups of young people are being identified all over America as problems for libraries. However, these teens respond negatively to librarians because of the way that they are approached and because they experience so much discrimination. If teen behavior needs to be changed, there needs to be a change in the way they are approached and an appeal toward their code of ethics.
