Growing Pains-From Standard Bibliography To Dynamic Web-Accessible Resource, Creating A Repository Of Popular And Scientific Writing On Roses Using Tei., Julia R. Tryon

Julia R Tryon

Twenty years ago, I started a project that I envisioned would culminate in a printed bibliography of writings on the Rose in English that would be as complete as possible—both books and articles. A bibliography on roses had been published in 1973 which focused on books and in 1984 there was a self-published title from the U.K. citing books and“significant” journal articles but which did not include the voluminous amount of articles in popular journals and newspapers. My goal was to update and expand upon what had been compiled by the earlier bibliographers. Two decades later, I have returned to …

Alexander Street Press (ASP) has become a leader in providing libraries and institutions access to streaming video and multimedia content. Since 2006, their offerings of online and streaming video databases have grown quickly. Recently, they released Silent Film Online (SFO), a collection of silent films, clips, trailers, and documentaries about filmmaking during the silent film era. ASP pricing is average for this content, and flexible, based on type of institution, budget, and FTE. Annual subscription or one time purchase of perpetual rights are options. Streaming Video Resources For Teaching, Learning, And Research, Julie A. Decesare

Julie A DeCesare

In less than 10 years the availability of digitally converted or born digital video, has grown exponentially. Libraries and librarians are constantly navigating, and helping their patrons navigate, this shift from analog to digital. For access to video, our libraries are challenged by an individual consumer marketplace, where institutional access is often limited and expensive. Due to limitations of streaming content, licensing and copyright issues for use in learning management systems and public performance screenings, and time and budgetary issues surrounding the conversion of analog to digital formats, public and educational institutions are still very reliant on physical formats. Patron …

If You Built It, They Will Come: Strategies For Developing An Undergraduate Research Conference, Mark J. Caprio, Robert B. Hackey

Mark J Caprio

The benefits of conference participation for undergraduates are now well understood, but the same cannot be said for the practical question of how to create and fund such opportunities for students, particularly at smaller liberal arts colleges. We seek to provide faculty and students with useful lessons for organizing, funding, and disseminating student research presented at discipline-specific undergraduate conferences. Hosting an undergraduate research conference pays dividends for faculty and students by a) providing incentives for undergraduates to revise and extend seminar papers for presentation, b) creating opportunities for students and faculty to meet and discuss their work among students with …

Search, Share, & Embed: Multimedia Resources For Popular Culture Research, Julie A. Decesare

The Internet has provided a wealth of multimedia and video content to teachers, students, and researchers. It is saturated by user-created materials (YouTube, Vimeo), digitized or born digital special collections by non-profit institutions (ArtBabble, Arkive, Duke AdViews), educational distributors and producers (Learner.org, WGBH), for-fee providers of on-demand streaming media (NetFlix, HuluPlus, Amazon Instant), and library database vendors (Swank Digital, Alexander St. Press) -- and more. Educators are often challenged by searching for and access to digitized feature film content. Copyright is always a consideration, but also just the ability to find the materials in the format they need, can be …

Providence College Library + Commons: A Case Study, D. Russell Bailey

D. Russell Bailey

Adapting concepts and experience from Information and Learning Commons, Providence College (PC) has developed a somewhat different model—organic (i.e., based on local library and institutional culture, needs, change-readiness; emerging in increments as opportunities arise, at a pace, at costs, and to degrees apropos institutional resources), hybrid (i.e., a seamless blend of services and resources, of new and high-tech with traditional and high-touch), and infused (i.e., the blend of services and resources is pushed out explicitly or implicitly into, and distributed among, all aspects of the physical and virtual library). PC’s Library+Commons incorporates resources and characteristics of Information and Learning Commons …
