Closing The Gap: Officer Advanced Education Stem+M (Management), Leon L. Robert Jr., Carl J. Wojtaszek

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

The Army has made insufficient progress in arming its officers with science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and management (STEM+M) knowledge. The contemporary battlefield is faster paced, technologically enabled, and data driven, requiring officers to possess more skills, knowledge, and experience. We examine the Army’s history with STEM education and show that, in terms of education, the current Army officer corps has fallen behind its requirements for technology-enabled forces and modern society. We conclude with recommendations on how the Army can close the STEM+M education gap through advances in higher education and adopting talent management practices.

News media literacy competencies and motivation in teachers are critical to media education initiatives. This article draws on a survey of 97 primary and secondary school teachers conducted as part of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and University of Tasmania’s national Media Literacy Project in 2018. The data reveals challenges in the implementation of media literacy in classrooms, highlighting a generational divide linked to Australians’ rising consumption of news from digital sources and social media platforms. This qualitative study aimed at revealing terrorism perceptions held by teacher educators working in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, and their opinions regarding the role of education that may play in ending terrorism. A total of 30 teacher educators took part in the study. The data were collected using a questionnaire involving open-ended questions in addition to demographics. The data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The findings were discussed in terms of relevant literature and the social and political context of Turkey, which yielded generalizable implications to other countries with a similar social construct.

This paper introduces a holistic and case-analysis teaching model by integrating case studies into cybersecurity courses. The proposed model starts by analyzing real-world cyber breaches. Students look into the details of these attacks and learn how these attacks took place from the beginning to the end. During the process of case analysis, a list of security topics reflecting different aspects of these breaches is introduced.
