Reduced Serum Concentrations Of Reactive Oxygen And Nitrogen Species Following Strenuous Exercise In The Heat Are Not Associ-Ated With An Upregulation In Serum Antioxidative Capacity, Sebastian Keller, Hannah Lisa Notbohm, Wilhelm Bloch, Moritz Schumann

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Introduction: Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) are produced as a response to exercise and play a part in guiding the adaptive response to physical training. Exercise in the heat has been shown to further increase accumulation of RONS in systemic circulation; however, a high antioxidative response or heat acclimatization mechanisms could attenuate this response. In a previous study, we found reduced RONS concentrations in trained athletes following strenuous cycling in the heat. Therefore, this secondary analysis assessed whether these reduced RONS serum concentrations are induced by an increased serum antioxidant capacity. Methods: Twelve male cyclists (V̇O2peak: 60 …

Putting Muhammad’S (2019) Framework Of Historically Responsive Literacy To Work In Middle Grades Language Arts, Kelsey L. Benson, Matt Brown

Middle Grades Review

Now more than ever, it is imperative that middle grades literacy curriculum invites “students to learn about matters of personal, social, moral, and ethical significance” (Bishop & Harrison, 2021, p. 27). Using a framework for culturally and historically responsive literacy, Muhammad advocates in her groundbreaking text, Cultivating Genius (2019), for curriculum that provides middle grades students space to learn about matters of significance, to name and critique injustice and oppressive structures, and to develop their agency to cultivate a better world. In this essay, the authors discuss the possibilities and challenges that we – one a former interrelated resource teacher …

Communicating Home During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned From A Middle Grades Speech Therapist, Kelsey Jenkeleit Dec 2022

Communicating Home During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned From A Middle Grades Speech Therapist, Kelsey Jenkeleit

Middle Grades Review

The COVID-19 pandemic changed how communication occurred between parents and teachers. This autoethnography focuses on my experiences as a middle grades speech therapist during the 2020-2021 school year, with a specific focus on parent-teacher communication. Using a Funds of Knowledge framework to help me analyze, understand, and describe communication data gathered over the course of the pandemic, I found that (1) communication increased during remote learning as more parents were home with their children; (2) the folding of work and home presented unique communication challenges, and (3) I felt a yearning for more communication to continue, especially after students returned …

Understanding Middle School Teachers’ Levels Of Efficacy To Meet The Needs Of Young Adolescents, Erika Daniels Dec 2022

Understanding Middle School Teachers’ Levels Of Efficacy To Meet The Needs Of Young Adolescents, Erika Daniels

Middle Grades Review

Middle school students are in even more need of social and emotional support due to the cognitive, social, and emotional changes occurring at this stage of their development (Caskey & Anfara, 2014), and their teachers are key players in providing what is needed. Unfortunately, there are few Institutions of Higher Education that offer programs or coursework focused on young adolescents’ unique and specific needs (Howell, et al., 2016). This contrast with calls for school contexts that are intentionally designed to support young adolescents (Bishop & Harrison, 2021) and raises questions about whether and how middle school teachers are prepared to …

Reported Benefits Of Yoga In Middle Schools: A Review Of The Literature, Paul Caldarella, Malka S. Moya

Middle Grades Review

Middle school is a time of adjustments in youth: physical, intellectual, and social changes often result in stress. Middle school students are vulnerable to academic, behavioral, and mental health problems. Yoga is an Indian discipline practiced for health and relaxation. School-based yoga programs are becoming increasingly common given their potential benefits for students. We conducted a literature review of studies of middle school-based yoga programs, focusing on the reported benefits for students. We identified and retrieved 12 studies from electronic databases including Education Resources Information Center, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar that met inclusion criteria; (a) examined the benefits of yoga …

“They Always Make It Right. We Can Do That For Everybody”: Young Adolescents Considering (In)Justice When Reading, Caleb Chandler, Kaitlin Wegrzyn Dec 2022

“They Always Make It Right. We Can Do That For Everybody”: Young Adolescents Considering (In)Justice When Reading, Caleb Chandler, Kaitlin Wegrzyn

Middle Grades Review

This paper draws on Bakhtin’s (1981) notions of discourse and ideological becoming to investigate how adolescents’ experiences with young adult literature and other texts might inform their thinking around issues of social justice. We engaged in a number of activities with the young adolescent participants: thought maps, illustrations of poignant scenes, written accounts of personal experiences, and focus group interviews. Using these activities as our data for this paper, we explain how the young adolescent participants called upon discourses of social justice to engage in the process of ideological becoming. Thus, the paper concludes that texts have the potential to …

Validating Financial Statement Comparability Assessment In Non-Profit Firms, Daniel Friesner, Andrew Brajcich

The North American Accounting Studies

In a recent manuscript, Brajcich and Friesner (2022) proposed a new methodology to assess financial comparability in not-for-profit organizations. Their approach utilizes entropy-based information theory, and thus requires few prior assumptions about the formation and implications of financial statement comparability. This manuscript assesses the practical utility of the Brajcich and Friesner (2022) methodology by comparing its results to those generated by nonhierarchical cluster analysis. The analysis was conducted using balance sheets drawn from Washington State critical access hospitals in 2019, using a similar set of hospitals and an identical set of variables outlined in Brajcich and Friesner (2022). We find …

History Of The Use Tax In The United States, Christopher Jones, Yuyun Sejati, Spencer Usrey

The North American Accounting Studies

The use tax was developed by states to complement the sales tax. The aim was to prevent residents from being able to avoid paying the sales tax by simply going to a different state to make a purchase. Unlike the sales tax, which is collected by businesses at the point of sale, the use tax is self-reported by individuals. Since its inception in the United States in the 1930s, compliance with the use tax has been close to zero. This article examines the history of the use tax in the United States, including its original intent, enforcement issues, numerous court …

The Global Mindset Of Accounting Educators - A National Study, Jill Christopher, Danielle Foster, Chao Wen, Perry Haan Dec 2022

The Global Mindset Of Accounting Educators - A National Study, Jill Christopher, Danielle Foster, Chao Wen, Perry Haan

The North American Accounting Studies

There is a mandate for business educators to cultivate Global Mindset in their students. In the accounting discipline, employers explicitly state that they seek job candidates who demonstrate a Global Mindset. To many educators in the U.S., developing Global Mindset in their students is a bewildering challenge because their own Global Mindset may be weak in some aspects, and widely used accounting textbooks fall short in presenting ideological, socio-political, and cultural perspectives alternative to that of Anglo-American capitalism. This study surveyed accounting educators from U.S. institutions to evaluate their Global Mindset, identify common weaknesses in their Global Mindset, and provide …

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

The term alternative media refers to media that serves as alternative sources of information in lieu of mainstream media. In contrast to social media, alternative media are mass media entities that carry out journalistic functions even though they are affiliated with community organizations. Thus, alternative media are expected to provide authentic news just like mainstream media in Muslim countries. Islamic alternative media are also required to produce quality news, and this was especially seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, when a flood of information resulted in confusion among the community. In response, training that aimed to enhance journalistic professionalism for practitioners …

John Dewey once said that “education is not an affair of ‘telling’ and being told, but an active and constructive process.” Accordingly, pedagogical processes should not simply be conducted by traditional lecturing, but rather, they should be constructive processes that gradually build the meaning-making process of the children through their active participation. Therefore, this paper aims to suggest materials that integrate English learning and LSE that are specifically designed for Indonesian children. As a follow-up project from the previous program, the current community service focuses on the implementation of life skills education (LSE) by integrating LSE with English learning in …

Herpes Zoster And Resultant Segmental Zoster Paresis: A Casereport And Literature Reviewarticle, Yen-Jou Ho, Hong-Yi Lin, Yao-Jen Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Herpes zoster (HZV) is ascribed to the reactivation of the dormant varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in the dorsal root ganglia. The most commonly seen manifestation is a painful skin rash. However, several additional complications have been documented in the literature. A less-mentioned yet severe complication is segmental zoster paresis (SZP), which can cause limb paralysis. SZP's mechanism is still under debate, and a direct invasion of motor fibers due to anatomical adjacency has been proposed. Here we report a patient who had sudden onset of left upper limb paresis and gradually developed a skin rash afterward, which a dermatologist confirmed as …
