Economic and Business Review

We analyzed Canvas LMS daily usage at School of Economics and Business, University of Ljubljana, where our focus was on its increase due to COVID-19 lockdown. The use of the LMS by both students and teachers has increased in the past two academic years due to successful adoption, so we tried to differentiate the impact of successful adoption from the impact of measures against COVID-19. ARIMAX models show that the distinction between the two impacts is clear for the daily number of sessions and for the number of students who were active during the day. The number of individual courses …

From International Borders To The Honeycombing Of Internal Borders: Response To Covid-19 Pandemic, David E. Toohey Dec 2020

From International Borders To The Honeycombing Of Internal Borders: Response To Covid-19 Pandemic, David E. Toohey

International Journal of Peace Studies

This article looks at borders during the Covid-19 crisis. In particular, it looks at how internal borders have arisen following xenophobic and national responses to Covid-19. This rise of internal borders is referred to as the honeycombing of borders. This article takes a genealogical approach to understand how borders have arisen—despite not always favorable opinions about them. Therefore, this looks at Rancière’s (1999; 2004) concept of the “police order” in the imposition of the sensible through Foucault’s genealogical approach, both to show the temporary, haphazard nature of these borders and how they revert to less desirable things. This is situated …

The Long-Term Gender And Race Issues In Long-Term Care, Brendan Williams Nov 2020

The Long-Term Gender And Race Issues In Long-Term Care, Brendan Williams

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

Women outlive men, and, as a consequence, comprise the majority of residents in both the home health and nursing home long-term care settings. Their caregivers are also overwhelmingly-women -- 92% of nursing assistants in nursing homes, for example. And those caregivers are largely non-white. Long-term care has long been regarded as "women's work," beginning with its slavery antecedents in the home setting. This article explores the connection between the devaluing of long-term care, which is largely state-funded through Medicaid, and the gender and race dynamics of long-term care.

Change Of Venue In Covid-19 “Hot Spots”: Can Coronavirus Related Lawsuits Get Fair Trials In Locations Hit Hardest By The Disease?, Marc A. Consalo

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

As our country struggles with returning to normalcy after the difficulties inflicted by the Coronavirus, throughout the fifty states lawsuits are beginning to be filed that originate, at least in part, with repercussions from the outbreak. With companies just starting to reopen their doors, some experts believe tort lawyers are readying clients to file lawsuits for lost wages and medical costs associated with contracting the disease while in a person’s business. The possibility of wrongful death lawsuits initiating from the cruise ship industry is a valid concern as well, with an April 23, 2020, Miami Herald article finding at least …

The Impact Of Coronavirus On Religious Tourism: Is This The End Of Pilgrimage?, Maximiliano E. Korstanje Nov 2020

The Impact Of Coronavirus On Religious Tourism: Is This The End Of Pilgrimage?, Maximiliano E. Korstanje

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The present paper, attends to the theme of COVID-19 and its negative effects on the tourism and pilgrimage industries. To be honest, although conclusive findings on this topic are premature in view of the velocity of facts, no less true seems to be that COVID-19 reaffirms a tendency originally stipulated just after 9/11 and declaration of the War On Terror by Bush’s administration. COVID-19 not only has shocked the world cancelling international flights, closing borders and airspaces, making irreparable damages to tourism and hospitality but it has operated on a much deeper level, developing a culture of fear, where ‘other’ …

Covid-19 And Quantitative Literacy: Focusing On Probability, Michael A. Lewis Oct 2020

Covid-19 And Quantitative Literacy: Focusing On Probability, Michael A. Lewis

Numeracy

The COVID-19 pandemic is arguably the worst crisis the world has faced, so far, in this new century. We haven’t seen a pandemic like this since the 1918 Flu at the beginning of the last century, and, as of this writing, there appears to be no end in sight. What those of us who’re focused on quantitative methods have noticed, in addition to the many people dying, becoming ill, and losing their livelihoods, is the importance of quantitative literacy to an understanding of what’s going on. That’s what this article is about. Specifically, it’s about how the COVID-19 pandemic is …

The novel coronavirus and COVID-19 are dramatically changing campus life. Most graduation ceremonies have been cancelled, leaving many thousands of academic gowns unused. The organisation Gowns 4 Good requests donations of gowns, which it donates to hospitals so their medical staffs can use them as personal protective equipment, which is in short supply.

Teaching And Learning Through Shared Grief And Loss During Covid-19, Amanda Thorpe

Michigan Reading Journal

The closure of Michigan’s schools and the emergency learning that followed no doubt kept students and teachers safe during a global pandemic, but the fallout from these transitions is differing amounts of shared grief and loss among students and teachers. Giving staff and students time, space, and resources to process this will be essential in any plan for returning to learning in the fall.

Can We Turn Off The “Covid-Biting-Tail” Inflammation?, Valentina Giudice, Amelia Filippelli, Carmine Selleri Oct 2020

Can We Turn Off The “Covid-Biting-Tail” Inflammation?, Valentina Giudice, Amelia Filippelli, Carmine Selleri

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

To date, SARS-CoV-2 has infected more than 32 million people, and 30% of cases needs intensive care treatment for severe Covid-19 and related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Despite medical efforts, mortality rate is still high, and no specific therapies have been outlined yet. Preliminary evidence from case reports and clinical trials using anti-inflammatory and anti-complement drugs shows a deep and overwhelmed inter-play between adaptive and immune responses triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection. Therefore, a combinatorial therapeutic strategy targeting both inflammation and immune system might more efficiently stop this inflammatory loop and prevent the development of ARDS.

Institutionalizing The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention's Independence, Dorit Rubinstein Reiss Oct 2020

Institutionalizing The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention's Independence, Dorit Rubinstein Reiss

ConLawNOW

The United States’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic was sub-optimal. One problem in it was the politicization of the public health response. One aspect of that politicization was aggressive political intervention in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) efforts to provide guidance and help pandemic response. The concern was strong enough that four previous CDC Directors, in an unusual step, published an op-ed calling out political intervention in the CDC. This article proposes two changes to strengthen the CDC’s institutional independence: codifying the CDC’s role in preventing diseases and reducing harms in a statute, and restructuring the agency …

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). On 30 January 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the outbreak of Covid-19 realizes a public health emergency of international concern. Because of the primary involvement of the respiratory system, chest CT is strongly recommended in suspected Covid-19 cases, for both initial and follow-up. We present the case of a Covid-19 patient, a 57-year-old man, with a typical HRCT course of OP reaction.
