The Bittersweet Taste Of Rice. Sloping Land Conversion And The Shifting Livelihoods Of The Drung In Northwest Yunnan (China), Stéphane Gros

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Economic development and environmental protection have often proved to be conflicting driving forces behind change in northwest Yunnan province, China. In 2003, the Sloping Land Conversion Program brought an end to traditional shifting cultivation in the Dulong valley—part of the Gaoligong Mountain Nature Reserve, Gongshan County— and is now threatening Drung people’s livelihood and culture while further increasing villagers’ dependence on state subsidies. This paper addresses the implementation of this program and the difficulties encountered by locals in relation to environmental protection and economic development issues. It describes the specificities of swidden cultivation and explores aspects of human-environment relatedness in …

The New Extensionist: Roles And Cap Acities To Strengthen Extension And Advisory Services, Kristen Davis, Rasheed Sulaiman V.

Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education

Extension and advisory services (EAS) perform an important role in agricultural development and help reduce hunger and poverty. Development efforts are increasingly complicated because of challenges such as natural resource depletion and climate change. Agricultural development frameworks have moved from a linear to a more complex systems perspective. Many scholars today use the agricultural innovation systems (AIS) framework as a conceptual model. This framework has three basic elements: all of the actors in the system that brings about agricultural innovation, their interactions, and the institutions and policies governing their interactions. Taking this approach while dealing with the challenges of development …

Infants' Speech Segmentation: The Impact Of Mother-Infant Facial Synchrony, Allison Kish, Katie Courtaney, Adi Dilger, Tori Gallo, Lauren King, Amy Jarvis, Ambry Roberson, Meredith Smith, Serina Thottichira

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Various measures of infant responsiveness have been shown to predict child outcomes. Despite this extensive research, there is no work examining links between infant responsiveness during caregiver-infant interactions with infants' ability to perform basic linguistic tasks. One key task in early linguistic development is word segmentation, an achievement that allows infants to build their mental dictionaries. We hypothesized that infants' responsiveness to caregiver facial expressions might be related to their word segmentation ability.

In order to test this hypothesis, mothers came into the lab and were videotaped reading books containing target words to their 5-month-old children. After the infants were …

The Role Of Culture In Social Development Over The Lifespan: An Interpersonal Relations Approach, Isabelle Albert, Gisela Trommsdorff

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This article aims to illustrate the role of culture for individual development throughout the life span. First, theoretical approaches how culture affects the ontogenesis is presented, starting from early anthropological to recent eco-cultural and culture-informed approaches. Then, culture-specific conceptualizations of development over the life span are discussed, focusing on development in childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. Finally, we concentrate on selected areas of social development and report on recent studies on subjective theories, transmissions of values, and intergenerational relations. These studies are discussed as aspects of a more extended interpersonal relations approach to development within culture.

Fields In Motion, Fields Of Friction: Tales Of "Betrayal" And Promise From Kangra District, India, Radhika Johari Apr 2014

Fields In Motion, Fields Of Friction: Tales Of "Betrayal" And Promise From Kangra District, India, Radhika Johari

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Over a period of five decades, Kangra District, located in the mountainous northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, has been continually si(gh)ted within different development imaginaries that have evolved at particular configurations of scale and time and been given shape within a succession of international bilateral projects. These development flows into the region have in turn fostered a plethora of competing institutions and practices, contributing their own sometimes divergent flows within an inherently mobile and “developmentalizing” terrain. While this dynamic and multi-textured terrain offers rich opportunities for partnerships forged across disparate sites, there is, I argue, a need to revisit …

Strategic Deployments Of ‘Sisterhood’ And Questions Of Solidarity At A Women’S Development Project In Janakpur, Nepal, Coralynn Davis Apr 2014

Strategic Deployments Of ‘Sisterhood’ And Questions Of Solidarity At A Women’S Development Project In Janakpur, Nepal, Coralynn Davis

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Linguistic uses of ‘sisterhood’ provide a window into disparate understandings of relationality among virtual and actual interlocutors in women’s development across vectors of caste, class, ethnicity and nationality. In this essay, I examine the trope of ‘sisterhood’ as it was employed at a women’s development project in Janakpur, Nepal, in the 1990s. I demonstrate that the use of this common signifier of kinship with culturally disparate “signifieds” created a confusion of meaning, and differential readings of the politics of relationality. In my view, ‘sister,’ as used at this project, was a multivalent, strategically deployed, and divergently interpreted term. In particular, …

When Poverty Becomes Profitable: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Microfinancial Development In Haiti, Yaniv Kleinman Feb 2014

When Poverty Becomes Profitable: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Microfinancial Development In Haiti, Yaniv Kleinman

Class, Race and Corporate Power

For the past thirty years, policymakers have lauded microfinance for its promises to reduce poverty and empower women in developing nations. First conceived by the Bangladeshi economist Muhammed Yunus and the bank he founded, microfinance has been hailed as a visionary project that promises to advance the economic interests of the poor by engaging them directly. Conventional studies by political scientists explore the place of microfinance in the global development architecture of international financial institutions, governments, and NGOs. Economic studies of its effectiveness are contributing to a crisis of legitimacy since they reveal that thousands of clients in developing nations …

Neurogenesis In Cephalopods: "Eco-Evo-Devo" Approach In The Cuttlefish Sepia Officinalis (Mollusca-Cephalopoda), Sandra Navet, Sébastien Baratte, Yann Bassaglia, Aude Andouche, Auxane Buresi, Laure Bonnaud Feb 2014

Neurogenesis In Cephalopods: "Eco-Evo-Devo" Approach In The Cuttlefish Sepia Officinalis (Mollusca-Cephalopoda), Sandra Navet, Sébastien Baratte, Yann Bassaglia, Aude Andouche, Auxane Buresi, Laure Bonnaud

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Cephalopods are new evolutionary and ecological models. By their phylogenetic position (Lophotrochozoa, Mollusca), they provide a missing master piece in the whole puzzle of neurodevelopment studies. Their derived and specific nervous system but also their convergence with vertebrates offer abundant materials to question the evolution and development of the nervous system of Metazoa (evo-devo studies). In addition, their various adaptions to different modes of life open new fields of investigation of developmental plasticity according to ecological context (eco-evo-devo approach). In this paper, we review the recent works on cephalopod nervous developmental investigations. We show how cephalopods, and especially Sepia officinalis, …

Keeping A Foot In Each Camp: Adequate Public Facilities Ordinances As Both A Concurrency Tool And Means Of Generating Revenue, Andrew Balashov Jan 2014

Keeping A Foot In Each Camp: Adequate Public Facilities Ordinances As Both A Concurrency Tool And Means Of Generating Revenue, Andrew Balashov

University of Baltimore Journal of Land and Development

In late 2012 a bitter war was waged in a small Maryland town. Newspapers portrayed it as a David and Goliath type story; rural residents fighting big business developers to keep them from destroying their small town's charm and character. Yet underlying the conflict were commonplace issues of land use and planning, governed by a little known, yet surprisingly ubiquitous law, known as an Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance. To set the scene Frederick County, Maryland is like many other counties across the United States that are coping with the effects of growth and demographic change. In decades past its residents …

History, Development, And A New Concept Of Phthalocyanines In Turkey, Özer Bekaroğlu Jan 2014

History, Development, And A New Concept Of Phthalocyanines In Turkey, Özer Bekaroğlu

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This paper reviews the history of phthalocyanines in Turkey. Phthalocyanines are chemical compounds that were accidently discovered nearly a century ago. The relevant research and articles have grown dramatically in Turkey since our first paper on them containing four [15]crown[5] published in 1986. The ball-type phthalocyanines were produced and published as a new concept in phthalocyanine chemistry for the first time by our group in Turkey in 2006. Unfortunately, with the exception of our work on this subject, almost no papers have been published in Turkey or in other countries since then. We strongly urge scientists to consider working on …

Nets Or Vaccines: Malaria Vaccine Research, David Ernenwein Jan 2014

Nets Or Vaccines: Malaria Vaccine Research, David Ernenwein

Pepperdine Policy Review

The global battle against malaria has seen many victories in the developed world but the undeveloped world and particularly Africa continue to suffer from this disease. The development of the RTS,S vaccine and ongoing research into additional vaccines have been touted as the solution to the crisis. However, the news of the successful RTS,S trial should be viewed with caution. Concerns over the effectiveness of the existing vaccine and the cost of further development may not be justified, especially given the known effectiveness of current treatment methods. This research must be watched carefully lest the allure of the vaccine blind …
