Does High Organic Matter Content Affect Polychaete Assemblages In A Shenzhen Bay Mudflat, China?, Li-Zhe Cai, Jiang-Shiou Hwang, Hans-Uwe Dahms, Su-Jing Fu, Xin-Wei Chen, Chen Wu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Coastal areas are the first marine systems being impacted by anthropogenic pollution and eutrophication. Organic matter poses a particularly negative impact on the environment due to its oxygen depleting and eutrophying effects. Shenzhen Bay mudflat contains rich organic matter. Here, we compare changes of polychaete assemblage parameters on seasonal data obtained from a Shenzhen Bay mudflat in a three-year study. The results based on the seasonal and spatial variations of polychaete species number, density and biomass, ShannonWiener diversity index, evenness index and richness index confirmed that high organic matter content impacted their distribution. A significant negative correlation between the density …

The new species, Rhinogobius sangenloensis, can be well distinguished from other congeners by a combination of the following features: second dorsal-fin rays modally I/8; anal-fin rays I/7-8; pectoral-fin rays modally 17; longitudinal scales 25-27; predorsal scales 9-11; vertebrae 26; body with 3-4 longitudinal, discontinuous orange to brown or brownish black bars and stripes; cheek with 2 grayish black spots in male; pectoral-fin base in male with 2 oblong black bars; caudal fin with an orange mark on lower 1/3 region in …
Effects Of Epistemological And Pedagogical Beliefs On The Instructional Practices Of Teachers: A Chinese Perspective, John Chi-Kin Lee, Zhonghua Zhang, Huan Song, Xianhan Huang
Effects Of Epistemological And Pedagogical Beliefs On The Instructional Practices Of Teachers: A Chinese Perspective, John Chi-Kin Lee, Zhonghua Zhang, Huan Song, Xianhan Huang
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This study examines how the beliefs of Chinese in-service teachers regarding knowledge and knowledge acquisition influence their instructional classroom practices in junior secondary schools directly or indirectly through their conceptions of teaching and learning. The results indicate that the factor of learning effort/process is highly valued by Chinese in-service teachers in their epistemological beliefs, and that the constructivist approach is the dominant conception on teaching and learning for junior secondary school teachers.. In addition, the constructivist conception of teaching and learning is found to be positively related to three types of classroom instructional practices, whereas the traditional conception about teaching …

Optimism Versus Pessmism: An Exploratory Analysis Of China In Zambian Media, Bob Wekesa
Optimism Versus Pessmism: An Exploratory Analysis Of China In Zambian Media, Bob Wekesa
Zambia Social Science Journal
The huge interest in Zambia-‐China relations globally, both in academia and popular press, inspires several inquisitions. How have these relations changed and panned out in the present, from a Zambian media perspective? Would a Zambian media approach help provide insights into the ebb and flow of perceptions about China inside Zambia? What can we gather from the Zambian media on the September 2011 regime change in Zambia vis-‐à-‐vis China’s engagement? In other words, how did Zambian media craft perceptions on and of China in the era of late president Michael Chilufya Sata’s leadership? To answer these questions, this exploratory study …
China’S Participation In The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Brian Arendt
China’S Participation In The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Brian Arendt
The Confluence (2009-2020)
The Louisiana Purchase Exposition was a “world’s” fair in more ways than one. While it featured exhibits from regions around the globe, it was also embroiled in international politics between the United States and China shaped by American policy and European imperialism, as Brian Arendt demonstrates here.

Glimpses Into The Life Of A Maine Reformer: Elizabeth Upham Yates, Missionary And Woman Suffragist, Shannon M. Risk
Maine History
Raised in a religious family in Bristol, Elizabeth Upham Yates spent much of her adult life as a reformer. While in her twenties, Yates spent six years in China serving as a Methodist missionary trying to spread the gospel and Western culture. Upon returning to the United States she became involved in two domestic reform movements, temperance and women’s suffrage. She was active in the women’s suffrage movement from the 1890s until the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 and ran for lieutenant governor of Rhode Island in the election of 1920. Yates was never a nationally renowned figure …

The Roles Of Size And Size Difference In Australian And Chinese Inter-Firm Collaborations, Yu (Aimee) Zhang, Zhiming Cheng, Charles Harvie
Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal
There has been considerable debate on the contribution and significance of firm size to the establishment, operation and success of business collaboration. One important source of this debate arises from differing definitions of firm size used in previous research. This paper uses firm size categories and size differences between collaborating firms to examine their contribution to the formation and performance of inter-firm collaboration in Australia and China. Both qualitative case study and quantitative data analyses are adopted in this paper. Results from both the qualitative case study and quantitative study in Australia and China show that size plays a significant …
Policies And Practices Of Professional Development In China: What Do Early Childhood Teachers Think?, Karen Liang Guo, Yan Yong
Policies And Practices Of Professional Development In China: What Do Early Childhood Teachers Think?, Karen Liang Guo, Yan Yong
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper focuses on early childhood teachers’ professional development in China. It reports a study which aims to elicit twelve in-service early childhood teachers’ perspectives of the values and issues of professional development policies and the learning opportunities they experienced. Two themes arising from the study are addressed, namely the teachers’ positive responses to the government aspirations for enhancing teaching in early childhood education, and the complexities of the organizational and role structures of the early childhood community in ChangChun where the study took place. An important aspect of the teachers’ perspectives of their professional development, which connects up to …
A Dual Track Approach To Challenging Chinese Censorship In The Wto: The (Future) Case Of Google And Facebook, Anonymous
Michigan Journal of International Law
As economic and trade policies continue to affect more facets of society, the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) impact on government policy and citizens’ lives has grown. Since its creation on January 1, 1995, the WTO has fostered trade liberalization negotiations and served as a forum where member countries can discuss economic concerns with one another. The WTO is perhaps best known for its dispute settlement mechanism. When countries cannot reach a mutual resolution to a conflict governed by a trade agreement, they can initiate formal legal proceedings against one another by asking for a panel to be appointed. The panel …

The Future Of Securities Class Actions Against Foreign Companies: China And Comity Concerns, Dana M. Muir, Junhai Liu, Haiyan Xu
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
In Morrison v. National Australia Bank Ltd., the U.S. Supreme Court limited the application of U.S. securities fraud law in transnational situations. The Supreme Court noted that its decision was influenced by international comity considerations. In this Article, we evaluate the availability of class actions in China in cases involving alleged securities fraud. Because we find that the availability of those actions is too limited to fully protect U.S. shareholders, we argue that U.S. investors should be permitted to bring securities fraud class actions against non-U.S. companies whose securities are traded on a U.S. exchange regardless of where those investors …
Chinese Contract Formation: The Roles Of Confucianism, Communism, And International Influences, Amy Lee Rosen
Chinese Contract Formation: The Roles Of Confucianism, Communism, And International Influences, Amy Lee Rosen
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
China has opened its doors to the world so understanding Chinese contract law is crucial to succeeding in international business transactions. The United States and China are both signatories to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), and both nations have declared that neither are bound under Article 1(1)(b), which means that if a contractual conflict arises, the domestic law of either nation may apply when interpreting the contract. China only requires offer and acceptance whereas the United States requires mutual assent and consideration, so contract interpretation may be problematic. Beyond offer and acceptance, …
The Emergence Of The Brics – Implications For Global Governance, Sotiris Petropoulos Ph.D.
The Emergence Of The Brics – Implications For Global Governance, Sotiris Petropoulos Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
The global financial crisis of 2008, with its detrimental effects on the global economy, was the starting point of a transformation of the global governance landscape. This fluid political and economic global environment seems to be leading to the enhancement of the position of regional powers, especially within the developing world. Hence, the importance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and, to some extent, South Africa, within the global governance structure has increased. This rise of importance is derived from the enhancement of the economic capabilities of these powers and the fact that economic interdependence has rendered the world more sensitive …

To Believe In Black Stars Or Red Dragons?: Comparing The Foreign Direct Investment Climates Of Ghana And China, Theodore W. Briscoe Iii
To Believe In Black Stars Or Red Dragons?: Comparing The Foreign Direct Investment Climates Of Ghana And China, Theodore W. Briscoe Iii
William & Mary Business Law Review
When thinking of overseas business expansion, most think of China. This is for good reason: China commands a lion’s share of foreign direct investment money. It would shock readers to know that there are destinations that are far more suitable for overseas investment than China. It would shock readers even more to know that one of these destinations is in sub-Saharan Africa.
Ghana—the Black Star country—has quietly put together a legal regime that is extremely attractive for foreign direct investment. When comparing Ghana’s foreign investment policies to China’s, Ghana’s policies are indisputably more favorable to foreign investors. Ghana offers more …

Perceived Discrimination And Subjective Well-Being Among Rural-To-Urban Migrants In China, Juan Chen
Perceived Discrimination And Subjective Well-Being Among Rural-To-Urban Migrants In China, Juan Chen
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Using data from a 2009 national household survey (N = 2,866), this study investigates the differential experience of perceived institutional and interpersonal discrimination among rural-to-urban migrants in China, and the consequences of these two types of discrimination on measures of subjective well-being. The results indicate that rural-to-urban migrants perceive institutional discrimination more frequently than interpersonal discrimination. However, perceived interpersonal discrimination has a more detrimental effect than perceived institutional discrimination for rural-to-urban migrants, and this effect takes the form of self-rated physical health and depressive distress. The research calls for a more equitable social environment and equal distribution of resources and …

Cooking Soup To Writing Papers: A Journey Through Gender, Society And Self, Zenobia Chan
Cooking Soup To Writing Papers: A Journey Through Gender, Society And Self, Zenobia Chan
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper describes my roles as a housewife, previously, and a doctoral student, currently. It examines crossing the border from the family domain to the university domain from a gender perspective. When I was a housewife, I was stigmatised by society and without any prospects. As a doctoral student, I am considered a worthy woman and my life has been romanticized. The analogy of cooking soup represents my life as a housewife, while writing papers represents my life as a doctoral student. Describing this dramatic transition from seven years as a soup-cooking housewife, to a third-year, paper-writing, doctoral candidate, I …
Teaching English For Economic Competiveness: Emerging Issues And Challenges In English Education In China, Yan Guo
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
Under China’s market economy, English language learning has been adopted as a strategy to promote the nation’s economic competitiveness in a global economy. This development reflects a discourse of linguistic instrumentalism. Based upon individual interviews of 24 English teachers in Zhejiang Province, China, the study reveals that teachers question the assumptions of linguistic instrumentalism, the gatekeeper role of English, the impact of the increasing dominance of English on Chinese language, and their students’ internalization of the belief in the superiority of Anglo culture. In addition, the study suggests that as a result of globalization, the delivery of English education in …
Freedom With Chinese Characteristics, Keith Kerr
Freedom With Chinese Characteristics, Keith Kerr
Societies Without Borders
The following “note from the field” is based off of first-hand observations and experiences had while living and working as an affiliated professor at a Chinese university. Noting the well-known political restrictions existing in China, the piece argues that against dominant Western narratives depicting a lack of freedom within China, there ostensibly appear spaces offering levels of emotional and interactional freedoms greater than what one can experience in the West. This argument is framed within the thought of Western intellectuals such as David Riesman, Erich Fromm, C. Wright Mills and Stjepan Mestrovic, and is advanced by considering the vast historical …
