Donna Ekart is a 53-year-old queer, femme woman living in Portland, Maine. Ekart grew up in Manhattan, Kansas surrounded by both her immediate and extended family. Ekart moved to Portland, Maine with her wife when she was in her mid-forties. Ekart came out as queer to her friends and family when she was 40-years-old. She has been involved in LGBTQ+ organizations including Equality Maine, which is Maine’s biggest queer organization whose aim is to secure full equality for the LGBTQ+ community in Maine through political action, community organizing, education, and collaboration. When Gardner-Webb University officials responded to the Coronavirus pandemic by switching to online delivery of classes and suggesting students stay home for the remainder of the spring semester, junior Savannah Parton came home to finish her classes. She also kicked her work routine into high gear. Parton is a communication studies major with a concentration in public relations and is active in the communication honors society, Lambda Pi Eta.

Since local 5Ks have been postponed because of Coronavirus restrictions, Gardner-Webb University is hosting a Virtual 5K. Runners are encouraged to stay at home and run or walk a 5K—on any day and time you choose—between April 25 and May 9. Participants are encouraged to complete the event in honor of someone—a parent or grandparent who attended Gardner-Webb, a son or daughter who attended GWU or who are currently enrolled, a current or former coach, a current or former teammate, staff or faculty member—anyone you choose.

Obesity is a persistent concern in Clinton County, New York. Over one-third of children and over two-thirds of adults in the county are classified as either overweight or obese. Obesity is associated with many adverse health outcomes, including all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, diabetes, and various cancers. Moreover, increased prevalence of obesity leads to increased healthcare costs for those affected, amounting to tens of billions of excess dollars spent annually. Research conducted by Gardner-Webb University senior Savannah Hollifield will have an immediate impact on the fitness world. Her findings will be added to the data used by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) to establish a normative base for its cycle ergometer protocol and push-up test. The exercise science major from Forest City, N.C., was one of 13 students who received a grant from the Undergraduate Research Scholars program for the summer 2018 term.

The obesity epidemic is a nation wide problem that has increased prevalence in Clinton County, NY when compared to the surrounding areas. Obesity leads to many co-morbid health conditions and is associated with a large increase in health care spending costs. This brochure tackles the limited resources, such as limited number of fitness centers, lack of nutrition education and an overall lower socioeconomic status, that is present in the Clinton County area. This brochure offers help in these areas through free phone applications which cover nutrition education, healthy shopping guidance, at home exercise routines, motivation, habit trackers and mindfulness exercises.

The United Way of Western Connecticut's 2014 annual report on Danbury's Young Children found that Danbury's children are facing many physical fitness challenges compared to the state of CT. A study looking at 4th graders in a physical fitness test finds that Danbury students consistently have a harder time passing the fitness test. Of the population studied, 42.5% were ethnically Hispanic.

Essential to treatment and management of these conditions are a healthy diet and exercise. There are many local and national resources available but no single place where patient’s can find links to national as well as local resources in the Central Vermont community. According to the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, the American childhood obesity rate has increased threefold within the past 25 years, a trend accompanied by increasing rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and even mortality. Obesity has grown so prevalent, in fact, that Centers for Disease Control estimate that one in three American children is obese. According to the Chan School of Public Health, unless legislation directly targeting America’s spiraling obesity rate is passed, the trend shows no signs of slowing or reversing.

The Salvation Army Kroc Center, a 12.4-acre family support, education, recreation, and cultural arts center located in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego, is interested in designing an intervention program to alleviate the issue of low levels of physical activity and combat the childhood obesity problem. The Kroc Center is well suited to designing such an intervention because it works closely with six partner elementary schools in its surrounding neighborhoods. Last fall, 18 Gardner-Webb faculty and staff completed the Charlotte Thunder Road Half Marathon as part of Dr. Jeff Hartman’s “Running With a Purpose” fitness group. This spring, the group tackled the Hickory Charity Chase Half Marathon, but their accomplishment was less significant for the miles they logged than for the “purpose” they championed: a new scholarship to honor longtime professor of physical education and wellness, and current Dean of Student Development, Dr. Delores “Dee” Hunt.
