The Role Of Depression On The Ability To Achieve Smoking Abstinence, Arian Mohammadyar, Maher Karam-Hage, George Kypriotakis, Jason D. Robinson, Jennifer A. Minnix, Diane Beneventi, Janice A. Blalock, Paul M. Cinciripini

Supporting Tobacco-Related Ongoing Education and Research (STRONGER)

We investigated how depression affects smoking abstinence among cancer patients who participated in MD Anderson Cancer Center's Tobacco Research and Treatment Program (TRTP), assessing outcomes three months post-enrollment. We also compared the likelihood of abstaining from smoking while accounting for nicotine dependence measured by the Fagerström Test for Cigarette Dependence (FTCD). The findings aimed to guide clinical practices in optimizing treatment of tobacco use disorder (TUD) to improve abstinence rates. Integrating comprehensive treatments for depression alongside standard TUD treatment holds promise for improving overall abstinence outcomes.

Suffocation, Alyssa Phillips

HCOM 434: Creative Publishing and Critical Storytelling, Spring 2023

This piece is about mental illness, and how it can leave you feeling constantly suffocated. Every day is a struggle when living with a mental illness, and it can feel as though your whole being is consumed by it. It has power over you, and it drains you to a point where you eventually surrender to its control. I chose to use a mimic octopus to represent it due to the unsettling size of the creature and its limbs, as well as its threatening patterns. This piece speaks of my own experience with uncertainty, when I had began to really …

Cognitive Behavior Therapy Versus Internet Cognitive Behavior Therapy In Adults With Anxiety Or Depression, Heather Greenwood

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

According to the American Psychiatric Association, the prevalence of anxiety and depression in adults in their lifetime are nearly 30% and 16.6% respectively. The combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy interventions (including talk therapy or cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)) are considered best practice, but in recent years there has been an increase in the popularity of applications and web-based services categorized as “internet cognitive behavior therapy”, or ICBT. The question proposed is, are these services as good for patient outcomes as traditional in-person CBT? A literature review was performed using electronic medical database PubMed with key word searches for cognitive behavior …

Perimenopausal Depression Screening And Treatment Efficacy Between Antidepressants And/Or Hormone Replacement Therapy, Mandy Stenehjem Apr 2023

Perimenopausal Depression Screening And Treatment Efficacy Between Antidepressants And/Or Hormone Replacement Therapy, Mandy Stenehjem

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

During perimenopause, women are at increased risk of depression due to complex and multifactorial factors, such as HPA axis dysregulation and fluctuations in hormones, like estradiol. Antidepressants are currently used to treat depression, but hormone replacement therapy may also have comparable antidepressant effects based on hormonal mechanisms. Perimenopausal depression is a unique subtype of depression and needs to be routinely screened by OBGYNs and primary care providers. The literature review found mixed results on the efficacy of HRT, antidepressants, and a combination of both; all treatments have shown promising benefits and specific screening may be needed to tailor treatment.

Histamine H3 Receptor Antagonism Mitigates Food-Hypersensitivity-Associated Depressive Behavior And Neuropathology In A Mouse Model Of Cow’S Milk Allergy, Danielle Germundson-Hermanson

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

Background Histamine is best known for causing allergy symptoms, but it also regulates blood-brain barrier permeability1 and oligodendrocyte differentiation2. Thus, brain histamine levels are tightly controlled.

Previous Findings We demonstrated that histamine and histamine H3 receptor (H3R) levels were elevated in a mouse model of cow’s milk allergy (CMA) in association with intracranial mast cell activation, depression-like behaviors, and cortical demyelination3,4.

Gaps in Knowledge In humans, food allergies are often associated with neuropsychiatric disorders5-7, but the involvement of allergy induced histamine in triggering behavioral changes is unclear.

Hypothesis Repeated allergen consumption can lead to central histaminergic dysfunction through H3R, ultimately …

Depression Screening And Suicide Risk Assessment In Older Patients, Faith Robinson Jan 2023

Depression Screening And Suicide Risk Assessment In Older Patients, Faith Robinson

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Older adults are at an increased risk of depression, but they are often undiagnosed and untreated. Depression is also a significant predictor of suicide in older Americans, who have among the highest rates of suicide of all age groups in the United States. Most older adults seek treatment in primary care settings and are less likely to use emergency interventions, so knowing how to screen for depression and suicide risk is crucial for primary care. Unfortunately, primary care providers, while being first-line for identifying depression, accurately recognize less than half of patients with depression. This pamphlet is aimed at increasing …

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

▪ Demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system are increasing in prevalence world-wide1,2 and manifest as motor, behavioral, and/or cognitive defects3 . The etiology and pathophysiology of demyelinating diseases remain unclear.

▪ We have previously observed cortical demyelination in our mouse model of non-anaphylactic cow’s milk allergy4 . The demyelination was associated with depression-like behaviors and region-specific increases in brain histamine and H3 receptor (H3R) levels4,5 .

❖ The brain’s central histaminergic system is tightly controlled and regulates many behaviors. Additionally, signaling through H3R plays a crucial role in oligodendrocyte differentiation, and thus, demyelination and remyelination6 .

▪ We hypothesized …
