Strong Black Woman Schema And Its Impact Among Black Women, Charissa Simon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative phenomenological study explored the impact of the Strong Black Woman (SBW) schema on the mental health and help-seeking behaviors of Black/African American professional women, contributing novel insights to existing literature. Despite possessing access and financial means for mental health services, a strikingly low rate of Black/African American professional women seek such resources. The study was grounded in intersectionality theory and the self-silencing theory. Eleven Black/African American professional women participants volunteered. Thematic analysis illuminated common barriers including pride, distrust in the mental health system, a strong inclination towards self-reliance, feelings of being misunderstood, and a lack of emotional support. …

Examining The Relationship Between Psychological Safety And Leadership Program Outcomes Through The Lens Of Intersectionality, Ominia M. Hamad
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Black women face unique barriers due to their intersectional identities of being both Black and female that hinder them from building their leadership capacities. Leadership development is one way to support Black women into leadership; however, such initiatives were not built with intersectional identities and associated needs in mind. This study was grounded in intersectionality theory, which posits that the effects of intersectional identities cannot be separated because intersectional individuals live at the intersection of larger oppressive systems and may experience unique forms of oppression that are not captured through single-axis approaches. This nonexperimental quantitative study includes an examination of …

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) graduate students, particularly those who are single mothers, have historically navigated systemic barriers such as lack of equal education, financial resources, academic experiences, or administrative support in pursuit of academic success. School closures due to the health and safety protocols during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic presented additional complications for BIPOC single mother graduate students attempting to complete their master’s degree, especially in school counseling. The purpose of this hermeneutic, phenomenological qualitative study was to understand the experiences of BIPOC single mother online graduate students, who were in the field experience stage of their …

Yet, knowledge about their experiences remains elusive in empirical research. Examining the nature and extent of their experience can provide valuable insights that could enhance research and practice on partner violence. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of African immigrant women survivors of partner violence in Edmonton, …

This study examined the relationship between macrosocial structural factors (i.e., housing stability) and the acceptance of risky sexual behavior (RSB) (i.e., condom use) between Black and Latino MSM, and transgender women guided by the health belief model and intersectionality theory. Using a quantitative approach, primary data were collected from MSM and transgender women …

Growing Up In The United Arab Emirates: The Cross-Cultural Identities Of Adult Third Culture Kids, Ninar Itani
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
While research on the multicultural experiences of refugees and immigrants is abundant, research on the psychological well-being (PWB) of third culture kids (TCKs) is limited. Using Useem’s model of TCK identity, refined further by Pollock, this research addressed the relationship between gender, cultural homelessness (CH), and cross-cultural identity (CCI), and how these predictors may impact self-esteem and PWB among adult TCKs (ATCKs) who grew up in the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, an intersectionality framework was used to conceptualize identity formation in TCKs. The primary hypothesis was that gender, CH, and belonging to a CCI predict self-esteem and PWB in ATCKs …
