Race As A Predictor Of Co-Rumination In Friendship Among Adolescents, Jendayi A. Stafford
Race As A Predictor Of Co-Rumination In Friendship Among Adolescents, Jendayi A. Stafford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Co-rumination refers to the excessive and extensive discussion and revisiting of problems and negative feelings within dyadic relationships. Differences in friendships concerning co-rumination have found that girls co-ruminate more than boys, however, researchers have not examined the relations between the racial composition of friend dyads and co-rumination in the friendships of adolescents. Theoretical frameworks included response styles theory and fictive kin theory. The study involved secondary analyses of an archival data set in which adolescents responded to surveys about co-rumination and their same-sex friendships. The population used for the study consisted of 265 adolescent friend dyads from a town in …
Comparative Study Of Risky Sexual Behaviors In African American Adolescents Who Use Drugs And Alcohol, Angela Matthew
Comparative Study Of Risky Sexual Behaviors In African American Adolescents Who Use Drugs And Alcohol, Angela Matthew
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health problem in the United States. Adolescents are a high majority of these cases, with African American adolescents being affected disproportionally. Previous research has shown that risky sexual behaviors, such as non-condom use, multiple sexual partners, early initiation of sexual intercourse, and alcohol or marijuana use before sexual intercourse put adolescents at a higher risk of contracting an STI when they are sexually active. These behaviors can be observed through the theoretical framework of the problem behavior theory that describes the constructs of why individuals engage certain behaviors. How alcohol and drug …
The Lived Experiences Of Minority Widowers With Dependent Children, Cathy-Ann L. King
The Lived Experiences Of Minority Widowers With Dependent Children, Cathy-Ann L. King
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Spousal death is a traumatic event well documented amongst clinical professionals because of its impact on a man’s physical and mental health. However, prior research on widowers has focused predominantly on white middle-class males. Little is known about the black indigenous people of color (BIPOC) male experience with spousal death, especially from those who are raising their dependent children. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to understand the lived experiences of BIPOC male widowers and their children. BIPOC widowers experiencing the trauma of this life-changing event without professional assistance are at higher risk of emotional, physical, and mental distress. Attachment theory …

Adolescent Rejection Sensitivity And Anxiety: The Moderating Effects Of Problem-Solving Skills And Gender, Kathleen Naumann
Adolescent Rejection Sensitivity And Anxiety: The Moderating Effects Of Problem-Solving Skills And Gender, Kathleen Naumann
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractRejection sensitivity is the ongoing anxious or angry expectation of interpersonal rejection. Anxiety can potentially have a significant detrimental impact on the mental health of adolescents who are characterized as having rejection sensitivity. Although negative consequences of anxiety on mental health have been studied, there is a limited understanding regarding how rejection sensitive adolescents are at risk for anxiety. This study involved examining relations between adolescent rejection sensitivity and anxiety and whether they were moderated by problem-solving skills, an indicator of resiliency, as well as gender. Theoretical frameworks in this study were the rejection sensitivity model and resilience theory. This …
Digital Citizenship And Adolescents Online Risk Behaviors, Soushira Liverpool-Morrisa
Digital Citizenship And Adolescents Online Risk Behaviors, Soushira Liverpool-Morrisa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adolescents now have greater access to digital resources and spaces and are more likely to engage in risky online behaviors for which they are unprepared. The study's purpose was to examine the little-understood online behaviors of adolescents to better educate and prepare them for safe online interactions. The study was framed by two theories: digital citizenship— the ability to engage in digital environments competently and responsibly, and problem behavior theory—an understanding of what encourages problem behavior. This research asked if there was a relationship between adolescents’ digital citizenship and online risk behaviors using a quantitative correlational design. Teachers from three …

Registered Nurses’ Perceptions Regarding Postoperative Pain Management And Opioids For Adolescents, Susan Miller
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
More than 2.4 million children undergo surgery annually in the United States and many experience postoperative pain. Poor pain management causes negative outcomes to both the individual and society. Increased rates of prescription drug misuse and rising death rates for adolescents from drug overdoses underscore the need for improvements in pain management. However, there is a lack of research, limited guidelines, and significant provider variability in managing adolescents’ acute postoperative pain. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the topic of acute postoperative pain management for adolescents through the lens of registered nurses (RNs). Nurses play an essential …

Sexually Transmitted Disease Awareness Amongst Adolescents 13 To 18 Years Of Age, Ngwanma Nwokoro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract Sexually transmitted infections or diseases (STIs/STDs) acquired through sexual activities lead to compromised sexual health. The adolescent population is at high risk of acquiring STIs/STDs due to their lack of knowledge. The gap in practice was that the nurse practitioners (NPs) were deficient in standard of care; adolescent patients lacked consistent evaluation, education, or documentation of the education in their medical records. The practice-focused question focused on the evaluation of the effectiveness of a quality improvement (QI) initiative that incorporated the use of the American Association for Pediatrics screening and Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) treatment guidelines …

Stressors And Depression Among Adolescents With Co-Rumination As A Moderator, Angela Grosso-Burke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Stress, depression, and co-rumination have been a focus of scholars in recent years. Although studies have considered the relationship among stressors, depression, and co-rumination, little is known about the moderating effects of co-rumination. This study aimed to address the gap in the literature by examining moderating effects of co-rumination on relations between stressors and depression, along with further moderating effects of sex, race, and grade. The current study examined mean-level race, sex, and grade differences in the relation among stressors (total, family, peer, physical appearance, sport/physical activity, school) and depressive symptoms in adolescents. Analyses were conducted to determine the relationship …

How Social Workers Contribute To Outcomes Of Adolescent Participants In Wilderness Programs, Tracy Dockler
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The wilderness environment has become recognized as a viable treatment modality for addressing the psychosocial and behavioral needs of treatment-resistant adolescents. Even though social workers provide services in these specialized programs, little is known about how they perceive the contributions they make to the outcomes of the adolescent participants. The conceptual framework of wilderness treatment with a focus on the wilderness experience, as well as on the physical, social, and psychosocial aspects of participant functioning guided this study. In this qualitative study, a semistructured interview guide was used to elicit the thoughts of five master’s level social workers (MSWs) regarding …
Impact Of Exercise On Depression And Anxiety In Adolescents With Complex Trauma Living In Residential Treatment Centers, Candace Snodgrass
Impact Of Exercise On Depression And Anxiety In Adolescents With Complex Trauma Living In Residential Treatment Centers, Candace Snodgrass
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression and anxiety disorders are two of the most frequently reported mental healthproblems for adolescents entering Residential Treatment Centers (RTCs). Many adolescents in RTCs also have a higher rate of traumatic experiences than their peers. Traumatized children frequently develop mental illness disorders of depression and anxiety. Based on the theoretical foundations provided by attachment theory and social cognitive theory, this pilot study, using secondary data, observed the relationship between exercise participation, depression, trauma, and anxiety for 11 youth in an upper Midwest RTC. Adolescents with higher initial depression and anxiety scores tended to exercise less during RTC than those with …

Clinical Practice Guideline On Suicide Prevention Among Adolescents, Beltta Gangwab Tachi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIncreasing rates of suicide among adolescents in the United States is an unsettling problem whereby suicide is the second leading cause of mortality among adolescents. Although interventions exist to address this problem, there is a lack of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) to assist healthcare providers to identify and prevent adolescent suicide. Guided by the zero-suicide model, the purpose of this project was to develop a CPG to address this gap in practice. A literature review on adolescent suicide prevention resulted in 24 peer-reviewed articles published in the past 5 years that were graded and arranged in a literature matrix. These …
The Connection Between Positive Coping Skills And Cutting For Young Adults In Adolescence, Nicoletta Weide
The Connection Between Positive Coping Skills And Cutting For Young Adults In Adolescence, Nicoletta Weide
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
According to recent studies, the instances of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents have sharply risen in recent years. Cutting is the most prevalent form of NSSI in adolescence which leads to scarring, social stigma, and an increased risk of suicide. NSSI and cutting are considered maladaptive coping skills. The purpose of this general qualitative study is to explore how positive coping skills and self-regulation impacted their instances of cutting. Self-regulation theory was used to analyze if having positive alternative skills was enough to regulate the behavior and have an impact on their instances of cutting. This general qualitative research study …
The Effect Of Race, Provider-Location Type, And Region On Adolescent Hpv Vaccination, Erica Sade Hunter
The Effect Of Race, Provider-Location Type, And Region On Adolescent Hpv Vaccination, Erica Sade Hunter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Studies have been conducted on various factors and their effect on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination uptake amongst adolescents. However, these studies typically point to communication factors and provider recommendations as having a significant effect on HPV vaccination uptake, ultimately leading to the need for more information on other factors that may increase HPV vaccination amongst adolescents. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to determine if race, provider-location type, and region of the United States have a statistically significant effect on HPV uptake amongst adolescents. The 2018 National Immunization Survey (NIS) was used, and 34,980 participants were included in …

Family planning (FP) is a cost-effective public health strategy, but the uptake is low with marked disparity among adolescents and postpartum women. However, data on these marginalized groups are limited. This quantitative, cross-sectional study sought to provide information on the factors that contribute to the uptake of FP among adolescents and postpartum women in Kenya. The 2014 Kenya Demographic Health Survey FP data were analyzed regarding the factors associated with FP uptake among adolescents and postpartum women as well as the differences by region. The factors were organized according to the socioecological model (SEM) and included intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, and …
Age-Of-Consent Policies And Hiv Among Adolescents In Sub-Sahara Africa, Suzanne Marie King
Age-Of-Consent Policies And Hiv Among Adolescents In Sub-Sahara Africa, Suzanne Marie King
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Age of consent policies have recently been identified as a barrier to HIV testing among adolescents in HIV endemic Sub-Sahara Africa. Grounded in the modified social ecological model, the purpose of this study was to determine if these policies were related to HIV testing rates and prevalence. In this quantitative research secondary data sets from the Demographic Health Survey were used. This study included all sexually active respondents aged 18 years or below (N=37,015) and then was further limited by respondents that had HIV test results (N=25,107). Binary logistic regression showed that respondents with lower age of consent had higher …
Predictors Of Co-Rumination In Adolescent Friendships, Rebecca Emily Smith
Predictors Of Co-Rumination In Adolescent Friendships, Rebecca Emily Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Co-rumination is talking excessively about problems with another person such as a same-sex best friend. Co-rumination is found to impact adjustment, such that co-rumination is related to an increase in depressive and anxiety symptoms but also an increase in friendship quality. The consequences of co-rumination have been studied, but predictors of co-rumination over time have yet to be studied. The study investigated factors that may predict co-rumination such as attachment style (secure, dismissing, preoccupied), expectations of rejection (angry, anxious), and gender orientation (masculinity and femininity) over a 9-month period. Theoretical frameworks included response styles theory, maternal deprivation theory, and rejection …
