The Binary Halides Of Molybdenum(Iv) And Tungsten(Iv) And The Oxochlorides Of Tungsten(Vi), Edward Roy Epperson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It was the purpose of this study to investigate the reaction of molybdenum and tungsten dioxides with carbon tetrachloride and bromoform (via the method of Knox and Tyree) to produce anhydrous molybdenum and tungsten tetrachlorides and bromides and to determine whether the method is a reliable one for the synthesis of these compounds. Out of this grew an investigation into the preparation of the oxochlorides of tungsten(VI) using the same preparative technique.

The results of this study are here set forth. An attempt is made to systematize the published material on the synthesis and properties of the binary halides of …

Polarography Of Selected Metal Ions In Anhydrous Aliphatic Diamines, Frederick William Foss Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A search of the literature revealed that no study has sought to measure and compare the polarographic solvent properties of the anhydrous aliphatic diamines. In fact, there has been no reported instance of the use of anhydrous 1,3-propanediamine or 1,4-butanediamine in any electro- chemical system.

Polarography As A Measure Of Ionic Environment, James Wilburne Larsen Jan 1965

Polarography As A Measure Of Ionic Environment, James Wilburne Larsen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present work is a polarographic study of the alkali metals and selected first row transition metals in DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) with tetraethylammonium perchlorate as a supporting electrolyte. DMSO was chosen as a solvent because of its interesting solvent and complexing properties. Tetraethylammonium perchlorate was chosen as a supporting electrolyte because of its lack of complex forming tendencies and because of the wide range of voltages available for polarographic investigation before the supporting electrolyte ions react electrochemically.

One of the problems, particularly in nonaqueous polarography, is the low conductivity of the solutions leading to high cell resistance. As current flows through …

Polarography Of Mercury In Aliphatic Diamines, John Charles Richardson Jan 1965

Polarography Of Mercury In Aliphatic Diamines, John Charles Richardson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem taken for investigation was discovered when a cryostat needed for use in polarography in liquid ammonia (the original problem) was found broken. For experience it was decided to turn to another form of nonaqueous polarography while the parts were on order. Materials remaining from a previous diamine investigation by Foss (21) were found in the laboratory. After reading the dissertation in which they had been used, it was decided to reproduce some of the results that had been previously obtained. Following preparation of the chemicals and several polarographic runs, a previously unreported wave was persistently observed. Further perusal …

Studies On The Rates Of Mutarotation Of The Benzyl-N-Carbobenzoxy-D-Glucosaminides, Kamthorn Sukumarabandhu Jan 1965

Studies On The Rates Of Mutarotation Of The Benzyl-N-Carbobenzoxy-D-Glucosaminides, Kamthorn Sukumarabandhu

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The independent interconversion of alpha-N-carbobenzoxy-D-glucosaminide to the beta- form, and vice versa, suggests that the proper treatment of the rate data must involve a system of opposing reactions. It is evident from the data cited in the preceding chapter that such opposing rates must necessarily involve the HCl which is included in the reaction mixture. Thus, as the first approach to the analyzed data, it is reasonable to suppose that the rate law for opposing second-order rates will apply. However, it is also apparent from the data that the concentration of HCl used in all this work exceeds the glycoside …

For this reason, this study has been made of the four existing school districts which comprise all the territory in Calaveras County in an effort to answer the question, "What is the most advantageous type of school district organization for Calaveras County?" This problem has been …

The Effect Of The Severely Mentally Retarded Child On His Family, Carolyn Mary Fowle Jan 1965

The Effect Of The Severely Mentally Retarded Child On His Family, Carolyn Mary Fowle

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The general purpose of this study is to attempt to determine whether or not the presence of a severely mentally retarded child has deleterious effects upon the family. The hypothesis that a retarded child tends to have a disintegrating effect upon his parents’ marriage has frequently been stated, but there has been little systematic research concerning the relationship of severely retarded children and the marital interaction patterns of their parents.

A common belief in the area of mental retardation is that the presence of a retarded child in family has an adverse effect on the other siblings. This is one …

Fock's Representation For Molecular Orbitals, Tai-Ichi Shibuya Jan 1965

Fock's Representation For Molecular Orbitals, Tai-Ichi Shibuya

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

V. Fock studied the hydrogen atom problem in momentum space by projecting the space onto a 4-dimensional hyper-sphere. He found that as a consequence of the symmetry of the problem in this space the eigen-functions are the R4 spherical harmonics and that the eigenvalues are determined only by the principal quantum number n. In this chapter we note that if his method is applied to the 2-dimensional Kepler problem in momentum space, the eigenfunctions are the R3 spherical harmonics, Y1m, and the eigenvalues are determined only by the quantum number 1. These facts enable one to …

Anomers Of D-Galactosamine Benzoates, Robert Stanley Strong Jan 1965

Anomers Of D-Galactosamine Benzoates, Robert Stanley Strong

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

D-Galactosamine has been known as one of the rarer amino sugars, occurring widely distributed in small concentrations in living organisms. The biological importance of D-galactosamine and its derivatives was thought to justify a study of the chemical properties of this group of compounds. As a result of this study the reactions of D-galactosamine have been found to differ more than previously thought from those of D-glucosamine, the more common amino sugar

For this investigation D-galactosamine hydrochloride was isolated from chondroitin sulfate, a polysaccharide obtained from the cartilaginous tissues of animals. This was changed by appropriate reactions to the 1,3,4,6-tetra-0-benzoyl-N-carbobenzoxy-α-β-D-galactosamine (III). …

An Investigation Of The Okinawan Reversion Movement, Louis Howard Dearing Jan 1965

An Investigation Of The Okinawan Reversion Movement, Louis Howard Dearing

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Patrick Henry and Thomas Paine might have been better equipped to understand the Okinawan reversion movement than are most Americans today. Many Americans in Okinawa wonder why, in the light of the obvious military and economic advantages of American occupation of the Ryukyus, an over- whelming majority of the Ryukyus wish to return to Japan. The question includes, of course, a full periphery of qualifications relating to degree and schedule of withdrawal, but the fact remains that no Japanese or okinawan politician dares oppose eventual reversion.
