Novel Membrane Composite Structures Based On Conducting Electroactive Polymers, Violeta Misoska Jan 2002

Novel Membrane Composite Structures Based On Conducting Electroactive Polymers, Violeta Misoska

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Conducting electroactive polymer (CEP) membranes have potential applications in many fields including metal ion separation and recovery. To date much of the work in this area has utilised traditional polymer films and membranes. While these materials are permeable towards metal ions, they have not exhibited great metal ion selectivity. Consequently this work has focused on the development of CEP materials with a high degree of permeability and metal ion selectivity. These included : 1. Conducting polymer membranes containing chelating agents as dopants. 2. Highly ordered, high surface area conducting polymer membranes (inverse opals and fibrillar membranes). 3. Conducting polymer/fabric composites. …

Investigation Of The Electrochemical Behaviour Of Metal Electrodes In Biological Media, Simon E. Moulton Jan 2002

Investigation Of The Electrochemical Behaviour Of Metal Electrodes In Biological Media, Simon E. Moulton

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The development of an optoelectric device (TruScan™) for the detection of cervical cancer provides the framework for this thesis. TruScan™ stimulates the cervical tissue with low energy electrical pulses producing a tissue response. This response is recorded at the three electrode tip and the signal is interpreted for a tissue classification. The aim of this work was to measure the extent of protein adsorption onto metal electrodes under various conditions, and then investigate the effects this protein layer had on the electrochemical behaviour measured at the electrode/solution interface.

The adsorption trends of proteins, and the effect that adsorption has on …

Design Development And Utilisation Of Conducting Polymer Sensors, Tuan Anh Nguyen Jan 2002

Design Development And Utilisation Of Conducting Polymer Sensors, Tuan Anh Nguyen

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The aim of this thesis is to implement a comprehensive study of conducting polymer sensor array for detection of species in both liquid and gas phase. The research area includes design of the sensor array configuration, development of conducting polymer sensors and carrying out some applications.

Sensor configurations have been designed towards different applications using inexpensive substrate materials such as polyvinylchloride with screen printed carbon electrodes (C/PVC), transparencies, glossy papers and photo films. Conducting polymer films were then deposited onto the base electrodes to form sensor arrays. Different fabrication processes involving chemical deposition, electrochemical deposition, inkjet and contact printing were …

Synthesis And Stereochemical Studies Of Chiral Polyanilines, Chinnarat Boonchu Jan 2002

Synthesis And Stereochemical Studies Of Chiral Polyanilines, Chinnarat Boonchu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The recent discovery of chiral polyanilines has opened up the possibility of their use as novel materials for the separation of enantiomeric chemicals or as chiral electrodes in electrochemical asymmetric synthesis. This thesis describes the synthesis and stereochemical characterization of several such chiral polyanilines. It focuses on three polymers, namely the parent un-substituted polyaniline (PAn), poly(2-methoxyaniline) (POMA) and poly(2-methoxyaniline-5-sulfonic acid) (PMAS). Circular dichroism (CD) and UV-Visible-near infrared spectral studies are extensively employed to establish the chiroptical properties of these polymers.

The thesis addresses a number of important fundamental questions that need to be answered in order for these chiral polyanilines …
